COMBINATION TELEPHONE INSTRUMENT.

To all whom "it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALFRED L. Sol-1M, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whittier, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Telephone Instruments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to telephone instruments, and particularly to a combined receiver and transmitter, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and compact device of this character, which will be neat in appearance and convenient to use.

In the accompanying drawing, illustrating my invention and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the combined device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. illustrating the receiver removed. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detail elevation, illustrating one of the receiver-holding elements, and, Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional view illustrating the circuit operating switch.

In the practical embodiment of my invention, in its preferred form, I provide a circular base 1, provided with an outstanding continuous flange 2 through which screws 3 extend to secure said base to a suitable stationary or movable support. Secured to the base 1 by a pivot oint 1, in order to move at a desired angle thereto, is a bell-shaped transmitter 5, closed by a perforated forward face plate 6, provided with screws 7 secured therethrough adjacent its periphery and at diametrically opposite points, said screws being held with their heads spaced from said plate 6, as shown. The transmitter 5 is further provided with a ringing and talking switch comprising a switch arm 8, pivotally secured at its inner end therein and having a hooked outer end projecting through a slot 9 in the face plate 6, said arm being pressed by a spring 10, to one limit of its movement to complete the talking circuit in accordance with the customary practice as is well understood in the art.

A circular receiver 11 is provided with an outstanding continuous flange 13 of a reduced diameter as compared with the diameter of the transmitter 5, said receiver when not in use, being adapted to be held by said Specification of Letters Patent.

transmitter, with its face plate 12 abutting the face plate 6 thereof, and the edge of its flange 13, engaging beneath the heads of the screws 7 In this position the said receiver 11 will press against the switch arm 8, and carry the same to the opposite limit of movement from that to which it is pressed by spring 10. Thus, when it is desired to use the telephone, the receiver 11 may be removed by grasping and sliding the same upward with relation to the transmitter 5, releasing switch arm 8 and completing the ringing circuit in the usual way to inform the central ofiice of the call, and allowing spring 10 to move said switch-arm to complete the talking circuit as is customary in the art.

The receiver 11 is provided with the ordinary talking circuit wires 14, leading thereto from the base 1, and is adapted to be held within the palm of the hand conveniently and without cramping the fingers as is so often the case with the ordinary receiver.

The device is convenient to use and when in its assembled position as shown in Fig. 1, presents a much better and more compact appearance than is the case with the ordinary instrument. Furthermore its construction is such as to prevent the entrance of dust and other foreign substances within 7 either the transmitter or the receiver.

Having fully described my invention, I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a suitably supported transmitter having a fiat face, said face being provided with adjustable engaging members, and a circuit switch, a receiver provided with a rearwardly extending gripping portion and an outwardly extending flanged open end, said flanged end being adapted to be arranged between said adjustable engaging members and to be supported by said circuit switch.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a suitably supported transmitter having a flat face and a tapering back portion, said face being provided with adjustable engaging members and a circuit switch arranged upon the lower portion thereof, said circuit switch comprising a hooked arm pivoted to said back portion,
