Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ju1y31, 191 '7.
Application filed September 4, 1914. Serial No. 860,209.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. E. MATTI- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a switch intended principally for use on telephone instruments.
The objects of the invention are The production of a switch in which the contact arm is normally held by a spring actuated, lever retracted latch;
The production of a switch wherein the pressure of a button will establish contact, and the pressure of another button will break such contact;
The production of a switch which may be readily applied to a telephone instrument without materially changing the usual form thereof; 7
The production of a simple, cheap and eflicient switch.
WVith these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter more fully appear, my invention consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts set forth in the description, more particularly pointed out in the claim, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the switch showing the same in place in a telephone standard, said standard being shown broken away and in section;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing the latch in front elevation;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken detail showing the latch engaging end of the lever in side elevation.
Referring to said drawings by numerals The standard of a telephone instrument is indicated at 1, and within said standard is mounted the usual switch plate 11, which has mounted thereon in the usual manner the Contact springs 12 and 13.
Suitably fastened to plate 11 is the usual and well known resilient latch, or bolt 14, the spring actuated tongue of which is adapted to contact the end of the elongated spring 12 and hold the same out of contact when the instrument is not in use.
Mounted on platell, adjacent the resilient latch 14 are'ears 15 which have pivotally secured thereto a curved lever 16.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for Lever 16 is provided with a suitable opening 17, in its upper end, through which projects the reduced end 18, of the push rod 19, which projects through a suitable opening formed in the standard 1, and is provided on its outer end with a push button 20. A coiled spring 21 surrounds the end 18 and is positioned between the lever 16 and plate 11, for the purpose of restoring the lever to its normal position.
The lower end 22 of lever 16, is angularly disposed and engages the bolt of latch 14: in any suitable manner, but, as here shown, said end is beveled and engages the upper oppositely beveled edge of opening 23 formed in said bolt.
An additional push rod 2-l passes through a suitable opening in standard 1 and is pro vided on its outer end with a push button 25,
while its inner end is adapted to contact the spring 12, for the purpose of restoring 'said spring to its normal latched position when the instrument is not in use.
In practice the device is operated as follows :When it is desired to call central the push button 20 is thrust toward the standard thereby actuating the lever 16 and drawing back the bolt of latch 14, which releases spring 12 causing contact to be made in the usual way. When the conversation is over button 25 is pressed in causing the end of spring 12 to contact the beveled end of the bolt of latch 14, which raises said bolt and allows the spring 12 to pass behind and be held by the same.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v In an electric switch, a contact member, a resilient latch engaging said member to normally hold the same in open position, said latch provided with an opening, a lever, an angularly disposed end on the lever adapted to engage said opening, means for operating said lever to open the latch and release the contact member, and means for forcing the contact member into latch engaged position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES J. E. MATTISON.
