UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
GEORGE W. WASHBURN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EAR-J EWEL FASTENING.
SPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,446, dated November 26, 1901.
Application filed March 30, 1901. Serial No- 63,669. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WAsHBUEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ear-Jewel Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for attaching ear-jewels to unpierced ears; and it consists in an ear-jewel fastening of novel construction comprising a new combination of parts, as hereinafterset forth and claimed.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevation of an ear-jewel attached to an unpierced ear by means of the improved fastening. Figs. 2 and 3 are side and sectional elevations, re-
7 spectively, of the fastening, on a larger scale,
showing it respectively closed, as in Fig. 1, and opened. Fig. 4 is an edge view projected from Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating a modification.
Like letters and numbers refer to like parts in all the figures.
The improved ear-jewel fastening A is intended and adapted to be used either in connection with a pendent jewel-setting B, as in Fig. 1, or in connection with a rigidly-at tached setting 0, as in Fig. 5.
The fastening A comprises a hook-shaped body part 1, having a cup-shaped abutment a and a bifurcated extremity b at its respective upwardly-projecting ends, a finger-lever 2, pivoted within said bifurcated extremity by a horizontal pintle 3 and. having a camming enlargement 0 adjacent to such pivot,
in Figs. 3 and 4, the lobe of the ear is freely admitted between the abutment a and the extremity d of thetongue 4. The lever is then turned down, as in Figs. 1 and 2, and the ear-jewel is securely fastened in place, the
main prominence on the periphery of the camming enlargement 0 being so located with reference to that surface of the lever 2 which contacts with the back of the body part 1 that the lever is held in its fastened or closed position, as in Figs. 1 and 2, by the pressure of the spring-tongue 'against the camming enlargement.
YVith the spring-tongue 4 forked, as above described, a slight pricking sensation attends the fastening operation and attests the same. Any inconvenience is only for the instant, however, and the fastening is comfortable so long as the ear-jewel is not disturbed, while any attempt to remove the ear-jewel without manipulating the lever 2 is accompanied by a sufficient pricking of the ear to insure detection. The extremity of the spring-tongue may be otherwise shaped, if preferred, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification- 1. An improved ear-jewel fastening, for unpierced ears, comprising a hook-shaped body part one end of which is provided with a cupshaped abutment, a tongue pivoted to the other end of said body part and having a lobepricking extremity opposed to said abutment, and a finger-lever pivoted to said body part and having a camming enlargement to press said tongue toward said abutment.
2. The combination, in an ear-jewel fastening for unpierced ears, of abody part, an abutment carried by said body part and against which the lobe of the car may be pressed, a spring-tongue pivoted to said body part and having a portion opposed to said abutment, and a finger-lever, pivoted to said body part, having a camming enlargement to press said spring-tongue toward said abutment and a main prominence 011 said camming enlargement against which the spring-tongue reacts to hold said lever in its closed position, substantiall y as hereinbefore specified.
