INVENTOR- Patented M3123, 1909.
R z'clzard L. [Voodwarol WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES RICHARD L. wooDwAnD, or JERSEY CITY, NEW JERsEY...
TELEPHCNE-TRANSMITTER ATTAGBTMENTL To all whom it may concern WARD, a citizen of the United States, and re- .nated by 1 -1n the practice of my invention siding'at Jersey City, in the county of Hudk son and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Tele hone Transmitter Attachments, I of whic the following is a specification, such as. will'enable those skilled in Qthe art to which it appertains to make and usethe same. This invention relates to-fltele hones; and
. the object thereof is to provide t 1e transmitter of telephone with improved means whereby the said transmitter maybe closed by an operator when using the receiver in order to revent conversation of anykind from pass ng through the tele hone at such time, and in order to permit t 1e operator to close the transmitter in order to carry on a conversation with others in his oflice orplace Where the telephone is located without such conversation passing through the telephone; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an attachment for the transmitter of telephones for vthe purpose specified, constructed as hereinafter, d'escribed and claimed. r i
The invention is full di'sclosedin the following specification, 0 which the accompanyingv drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig- ;suitahle reference characters in each of t e views, and in which:
Figure 1' is a side" view of the transmitter of a telephone provided with my improvemcnt, art of the construction being in sec tion, Flg. 2 a View in. an opposite direction to that of Fig. 1; Fig, 3 a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the accom anying drawing I have shown at a an or inary transmitter case pivoted, in the usual manner, to a support I) and rovided with the usual mouthiece c, and )rovide an intermediate 1nember or casing which is placed between the mouth piece 0 and the casing a. T he intermediate member or casing (1 is provided with a screw threaded neck (I at one endwhich'is screwed into the face a of the casing a, and at its opposite end with an interiorly threaded opening (1 and the month piece 0 is provided with the usual exteriorl'y threaded neck 0 which is screwed into the opening (1 The intermediate memher or casmg dis preferably fiat on the bottom side thereof as shown at d, andthe screw Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 4, 1908. .Serial No. 465,922. v i
it, and whenever it'ls desired tojopenrtlie which the free endof thehan'dlejt the handle 7t as above describe threaded neck a of the mouthpiece -je ots into the 7 intermediate rniem-be .clearl shown in Fig. 1,. and a passing ztrans'e verse y through the bottomportiolrwoflthe intermediate member or casing. d b r I the neck c of the mouthpiece cis a rod e which is'mounted a plate and coilled onpthe 'rod 6 is a spring 9 which normally holds t1 plate f in a raised positionasshown;in,-f tll mes 1n Fig l in which position'it pressespn the end of the. neck 'c'tofthe, moutht pieces 1' and securely closes the same, and; this ,platia; f forms a damper or cutoff forthis "rpose or any conversation "through the telephon j T he rod c projects at one side'of-the meni her or casing (Z and is prov-idedwith a h ai1d telephone, or the mouth piece so th at c0 versation may he carriedon thro gh telephone the handle 72. is turned. down int a, y horizontal position as indicatcdmindotted lines in Fig. 2 and is heldin'this po 'b a spring finger 01 secured ,at'janyI" manner, and the free endofwhich e downwardly and is provic'led, with-a r ,es

shown in said figure. f'
It will be understood I normally holds the plate finiits clos tion as shown in Fig. 1, and injturnin i on v d" into the p i sition shown in Fig. 2, the s ring is -pju der tension and assoon ast e handle] r W leased by pressing backwardly, on the s' ring i, the ,s )ring g will at oncethrow, said'pliitef u upwar ly into thefclose d position hs'slidixfi in fell lines in'Fig; 1. -9- The plate f may be made in any desired nannenand' may be provided wit 1 a cushion if desired or "a coveringv of felt, soft rubber or any-other suitable material, and the mouthpiece 0 may be detached from the intermedlate member or casing d, i 'and said member or casing may be detached when desired for cleaning or other purposes, and when it is not desired to use my'improvement the mouthpiece c may be connected directly with the casing a-in the usual mannerfand it will be seen that my improvement does not involve any change whatever in the construction of the parts a and 0.
With m improvement it willbe apparent that in or er to open the transmitters 1 that is necessary is to turndcwnthe handle has the operation of the spring t is automatic,
and in order to cldse the transmitter all that is necessary is to release the handle it and this may be done bypressing on the. bottom. thereof,
or by pressing backwardly on the spring 'b.
, Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. The Combination with the main casing and mouth piece of the transmitter of a telephone, of an intermediate casing detachably the transmitter, said plate and rod being.
provided with a spring which normally holds sald plate in position to close the transmitter. 2. The combination with the main casing and mouth piece of the transmitter of a tele-- phone, of an intermediatecasing detachably connected with the main casing and with which the mouth piece is detachably connected, said intermediate casing being provided transversely of the bottom portion thereof and of the outer end thereof with a rod which projects therefrom at one side and is provided. with a handle, and a plate securedv to said rod within said intermediate casing and adapted in one position to close the transmitter, said plate and rod being provided with a spring which normally holds said plate in position to close the transmitter, andsaidintermediate casing being provided at one side with a spring which 0 erates in connection with said handle to old said plate in a position to open the transmitter.
3. The combination with the main casing and mouth piece of atelephone transmitter,
of a supplemental casing placed between the main casing and the mouth piece, said supplemental casing being detachably connected with the main casing, and the mouth piece being detachably connected with the supple mental casing and the neck thereof projecting into said casing, said supplemental casing being fiat on its bottom side and the outer end portion thereof being provided beneath the neck of the transmitter with a rod which is turned transversely therein and one end of which pro'ects therefrom and is provided with a handle, a late connected with said rod and adapted 1n one position to bear on the neck of and close the transmitter, said plate and said rod being provided with a spring which normally holds theplate in position to close the transmitter, and said supplemental casing being provided on its outer side with a spring which 0 )erates in connection with said handle to hold said plate in position to open the transmitter.
4. The combination with the main casing and mouth piece of the transmitter of a telephone, of an intermediate casing one end of which is detachably connected with the main casing and with the other end of which the mouth piece isidetachably connected, said intermediate casing being provided with a rotary rod which passes transversely therethrou'gh and one end of whichprojects' from one side thereof, and a plate secured to'said ,rod Within said intermediate casing and adapted in one position to close the passage through said intermediate casing and transmitter, and means for normally holding said plate in position-to close said passage.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 3rd day of December 1908.
