PHONOGRAPH-HORN SUPPORT.

Specification of Letters Patent.

I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OTTO L. ENDREs and REIN- HOLD PIETSCII, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Phonograph-Horn Supports; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The object of our invention is to provide a support of a substantial construction for the horns for phonographs, said support being easily and conveniently applied to the machine or case, and arranged forsuitable adjustments to adapt it to uses for various makes of machines and various sizes and arrangements of the horn.

Figure l shows a plan view of the horn support, which is the subject of this invention, applied to the machine and in use in the usual manner. Fig. 2 is a side elevalieu of the base of the machine, together with the support before referred to. Fig. 3 is another elevation from a point of view taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows details of a nut and wrench for securing the attachments to the machine case, in plan view. Fig. 5 shows details of this construction partially in section. Fig. 6 shows details in section, and Fig. '7 same details in elevation, of an adjustable joint employed in the support.

Referring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description, 1 indicates the base ofa phonograph, which base is usually provided with slots 2 to receive a removable box cover. in the ordinary manner.

3 is an arm, which is adapted to be secured to the base by a hook 4 having a screw-threaded shank, said hook adapted to be passed through one of the slots 2, its shank passing through the inner end of arm 3 and receiving the nut 5 and the wrench 6. The lower portion of the nut 5 is cylindrical, while the upper portion is octangular, or of any other suitable angular form. The wrench 6 is provided with a round opening to receive the lower end of the nut 5, and also with an octangular orsuitable formed recesses to receive the angular portion of the nut 5. When the wrench is in its elevated position, as shown in Fig. 5 the nut may be rotated by the wrench and when in its lower position the wrench may be rotated freely on the lower end of the nut. By this arrangement, means is provided for applying sufficient force to the nut 5, which is ordinarily located in such proximity to the end of the phonograph mechanism as to make it impossible to use a crank nut.

The arm 3 is adapted to extend beyond the front of the base 1, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, and in its projecting end is a vertical eye 3, which receives the post 7. The post 7 is preferably provided on its lower end with a rubber tip 7 adapted to rest on the top of a table as T, on which the machine may set. At the upper end the post 7 is provided with a joint member 8, which receives the joint member 9 of the swinging arm 10, the two being pivoted together on a pivot 9. The joint member 9 is provided with a segment of cog teeth, as shown in Fig. 6, adapted to engage with the laterally sliding toothed nut 8 provided in a chamber in the part 8, the nut 8 being moved by the thumb screw 8". The arm 10 is preferably made tubular and receives the telescoping extension 11, from the outer end of which the phonograph horn A is adapted to be suspended. The lower end of the post 7 resting on the table top or other supporting surface for the phonograph base 1 gives stability to the horn support and obviates a tendency to overturn the phonograph machine base, which is a common objection where horns of large dimensions are employed. By rotating the post 7 in the eye 3, the arm 10 with its extension 11 can be given such an angular position with reference to the base 1 as will support the horn in the desired angle with reference to the base.

The elevation of the horn can be changed or adjusted by manipulating the thumb screw 8. The several parts of the horn support may be readily taken apart, and when thus taken apart can be placed in a compact bundle, which is not objectionable to handle or carry and quite a feature in a device of this kind.

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination with the supporting arm, post, and swinging arm of a horn support of the attaching device consisting of the screw-threaded hook 4, the nut 5 having a cylindrical lower portion and an angular head portion and the wrench G permanently mounted thereon and adapted to be moved laterally on the nut to engage and disengage the angular portion, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination in a horn support for phonographs of the upright post, an adjustable arm hinged to the upper end of the post, and an adjusting mechanism therefor consisting of a toothed segment attached to the adjustable arm and a laterally movable toothed nut incloscd in the joint and engaging with said segment, and a screw for moving the nut, substantially as set forth.
