Description

PATENTED JULY 16, 1907.
G. E. HAWKINS. HOLDER POR METER SLIPS.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.19. 1906.
UNITED ,sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE'.
GEORGE E. HAWKINS, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
` y HOLDER FOR METER-SLIPS.
Application tiled December 19, 1906. Serial No. 348,535.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1907.
' pose of receiving an impression from the hands of said meter registering mechanism, said slips'consequently providing a record of the state ofthe'mete'r at the time such insertion is made.
The object of the invention is not only to facilitate the entry of the slips into position in themechanism, but is also designed to provide a cushioned backing for the slip and to enable the operator to save time by inserting the slips in theholder as he goes from one meter to another. This results in having the slips ready for immediate entrance to the registering mechanisiri as soon as the meter is reached, the holder preventing the slips from catching over the hands of the registering mechanism.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a perspective view of a meter slip holder constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of said holder illustrating the posit-ion in which it lies after it has been inserted in the registering'mechanism of a meter, and, Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the holder. 4
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing. i
This meter slip holder is particularly designed for use in connection with the device for recording the readings of meters, for which I led a patent application on May 4th, 1906, Serial Number 315,188, and Fig. 2 of the drawings of this application shows the meter slip holder inserted from the top in front of a glass platen. such as is shown in Fig. 2 of the application above referred to.
Referring to the drawing, the numerals 5 designate the hands of a meter registering mechanism and G designatos a glass platen which is adapted to be forced toward said hands by the ward 7 of a key 8 when said ward is brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 2, at which time the platen and consequently the holder and the paper slip carried thereby, will be forced up against the hands. This holder comprises a body portion 9 which is cut out as at 10 to facilitate the grasping of the upper edge of the paper slip 11 which is adapted to receive the record. A pad l2 which may be of blotting paper or felt or any other yielding material, covers the inner face of the body portion 9 and serves to form such a cushion as will produce a clearcut impression of the hands 5 upon the paper slip 11. 'The side edges 13 and the bottom edge 14 of the body portion 9 are inturned to form a groove 10 which not only aids in retaining the cushion 12 in position, but provides ways for the reception of the paper slip.
The operation of the device is as follows: The operator Who takes the readings of the meters, travels from `house to house and as he goes, he places in the holder herein shown and described, one of the slips 12, these slips'being adapted to receive impressions from the hands 5. After the holder has been slipped into position between the platen G and the hands 5, said platen normally lying against the flanges 15 of the casing lli, the key 8 is turned and the platen is forced toward the hands 5. This brings the'paper slip into Contact with said hands and by virtue of the cushioned surface l2, provides an efficient record of the position of the hands at the time the impression is made. The paper slip forms no part of the present'invention, a paper slip adapted to serve the purposes set forth and to be used in conjunction with this holder 'having been shown and described in my co-pendiiig application, Serial Number 315,187, filed May 4th, 1906.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficientI means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while theI elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is:
In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a body portion, of side flanges which are bent in wardly over said body portion, a bottom flange which is bent upwardly over said body portion, 'and :i bucking member of yielding material which covers the inner face of the body portion, said body portion beine; cut away in such manner that it is lower than the tops of the side members, the side members being open at the top to form ways for the reception of a recordslip and the bottom member limiting,l the downward movement of said slip. substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
