Description

UNITED STATES PiTENT OFFIOE.
NOAH W. SPEERS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BLIND AND SHUTTER OPERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NOAH W. SPEERS, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in I/Vindow-Blind Operators and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nature, construction, and operation thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this speciication. i
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and secure method of operating and fastening outside window shutters and blinds, Without opening the windows, and I have invented the present in view of a number of contrivances, which appear to me to beylacking in strength when force is applied, such as high winds, &c.
The annexed drawing is a horizontal view of this apparatus.
My present contrivance consists of but few parts and these admit of any requisite degree of strength being given to them which can scarcely be said to be the case in those operated by pinion and spur wheels, &c.,
where a large number of pieces are crowded into the space which takes the place of the usual hinge, and projects from the face of the building.
The parts of my blind operator are as follows; (premisiiig that it is inserted under the lower horizontal piece or subsill of the window frame, and works immediately above and almost touching the main sill, upon which the frame rests). An iron plate (a) with a rising ange (b) (by which it is secured in position), is let into a iiiortise of its own shape, on the under side of the window frame, the lower face resting upon the sill. Near the outer edge of this, a pivot (C) is provided, upon which a lever (el), oscillates and is at its farther extremity connected to the shutter or blind by xthe stiid (e), which works in a groove or grooved plate in the under edge of the said shutter or blind and at the inner extremity is connected by a link (g) with the lever (hi), which is pivoted near the inner edge of the plate.
(7c) is a rod, which at one end is formed into a handle entering the room, and at the other end is bifurcated or forked, so as to straddle the lever (It), upon` which it is slidable, so that when drawn out,` it possesses an increased leverage upon the shutter, and when retracted or pushed in, it need not project more into the room, than is sufficient for 8,597, dated December 16, 1851.
the grasp, so as to be out of the way when out of use. Its capacity for elongation and retraction, is also made to serve another purpose about to be explained.
Aflixed at proper positions in the plate (a), are studs j) which project upward from its surface, and by the pressure or bearing of the handle, or extension member (7e) of the lever, against or between these when thrust inward, the whole affair is locked, and does not admit of motion of the shutter or tampering from the outside.
The permanent portion (7i.) of the lever, which is pivoted at (2') and linked at its outer end to the external lever (f el), is raised so much above the plate that it sweeps clear of the studs (j j) but the extension portion or handle (7c) avoids them only 'when protracted, which action as has -been before stated gives also a greater leverage. The sides of the lever, which come in con; tact with the studs are tapered oif in such a manner, as to fall easily into, and wedge tightly up to the positions of shut, half open and fully open, the first named position being shown by red lines, (the lever being extended) and the left side, (it being for a right hand shutter) coming in contact with the stud. In the second position of half open, the extension lever is thrust between the studs and In the black lines, the apparatus being shown wide open, the left side of the lever is'in contact with the stud.
I-Iaving thus fully described the nature of my improvements in window blind operators and fasteners what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the extension handle (7c) (provided with taper ends) with the lever (7i), and the studs (j j) or their equivalents, by which the handle can by extension, be made to possess the requisite leverage, and by which when the lever arrives at that portion of its sweep, corresponding to the required position of the blind or shutter, it is firmly secured in its position, and the handle placed out of the way by 'the latter being thrust home against the studs, the whole being arranged substantially in the manner described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand before two subscribing witnesses.
N. IV. SPEERS.
