Be itknown that I, JOHN F. GORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phila-- delphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Awning-Adjuster, a new and useful device by which awnings or outside window-shades may be raised or lowered by means of a certain mechanism, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in awnings, and particularly to mechanism for raising and lowering the same and holding the said awnings in their difierent adjusted positions.

It consists in the combination, with an awning-frame, of a slotted lever engaging the same and mounted upon a pivot, means for moving the slotted lever with respect to the pivot for obtaining a sufiicient leverage to raise the frame, and means for locking the said lever to hold the frame in its raised position.

It also consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fullydescribed and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an awning applied to a window, the awning being shown in its lowered position. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged front elevation of a portion of the awning-frame, with the operating-lever holding the said frame in its raised position; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.

It has been quite common heretofore to employ a series of pulleys and ropes for raising and lowering awnings for doors and windows and like places, and thus form means which are likely to. get out of order or to wear out quickly and are more orless unsightly in appearance. My invention is designed to do away with the necessity for such devices and to provide a simple easily-operated mechanism for operating an awning. I

In embodying my invention into practical form I employ in connection with an ordinary awning-frame 1 an operating-lever 2. The awning-frame 1 may be made of round metal, if desired, and it is provided at its ends with eyes, as 3, which are adapted to engage pivot-pins located at the sides of a Window or door frame or other opening to which the awning is to be applied. The eyes of the awning frame preferably engage a stud 4, secured to a stud-plate 5, which can be applied by screws or otherwise to the window-frame. The stud 4 is also preferably made sufficiently long to engage and support the lever 2. Suitable spacing-washers, as 6 6, are interposed between the eye 3 and the plate 5, as well as between the said frame and the lever 2. A washer 6 is also applied to the outer end of the stud 4, and a cotter-pin, as 7, may be employed for holding the parts above named upon the said stud. The operating-lever 2 is preferably enlarged for the greater part of its length and is provided with an elongated slot 8, which engages the stud 4. This slot is preferably enlarged at its ends, forming recesses 9 and 10, into which the stud 4 may be brought for holding the lever in its different positions. One end of the lever 2 is provided with a laterally-projecting eye or sleeve, as 11, which embraces the frame 1 and is thus adapted to slide thereon. The lever 2 may thus be moved back and forth upon the pin 4, the eye 11 permitting it to be thus moved with respect to the frame I. The other end of the lever is preferably slightly rounded and adapted to engage an eye or socket 12, mounted upon an eye-plate 13. The eyeplate 18 may be screwed or bolted to the window or door frame in the same manner as the stud-plate 5. In order to provide a handle for lifting the lever at the eye 12 and otherwise operating it, I secure a laterally-projecting rod or handhold 14 to the said lever near its lower end.

The operation of the device is as follows: ,When the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the awningframe is raised. Now if it is desired to lower the frame the handle 14 is grasped and the lever 2 moved longitudinally until its lower end becomes disengaged from the eye or socket 12. The said lever may then be moved to one side and the awning-frame permitted to drop to its horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In order to prevent the lever from projecting too far beyond the stud 4 when the awning is down, the said lever is preferably pushed along upon the said stud until the recess 10 of the slot 8 engages it. When it is desired to raise the awning,

the lever 2 is pulled along upon the stud 4 until the notch or recess 9 of the slot 8 engages the same. Bythis operation the free end of the lever is moved sufficiently far from the fulcrum-point or stud 4 to afford a strong leverage for raising the frame 1. By pressing downwardly upon the free end of the said lever the awning-frame can be easily raised to its upright position, and then by lifting the lever with respect to the said stud 4 the lower end may be inserted in the eye 12, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the awning-frame will thereby be locked in its raised position.

This mechanism affords a device which is very simple in operation and which is very effective for quickly raising and lowering an awning-frame. By its slotted form the leverage can be increased to the desired amount by the operator, and yet the said lever when not in use can be so arranged as not to project beyond the pivot-point or can be used to lock the frame in its upper position, as the case may be.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with an awning-frame,

of an operating-lever movably mounted upon the fulcrum and slidably connected with the awning-frame, whereby the lever may be moved one way to increase its leverage for raising the frame and may be moved the other way for holding the frame in its raised position, and a keeper or socket for holding the said lever in its raised position substantially as described.

2. The combination with an awning-frame, of an operating-lever com prising a bar having a longitudinal slot formed therein, a pivotstud projecting from the awning-frame and engaging the said slot, an eye formed upon the lever and loosely engaging the awningframe, whereby it may slide with respect to the same, the structure being such that the lever may be moved longitudinally upon a pivot-pin so that-the leverage for raising the frame may be increased and so that the said lever may also be employed for locking the frame in its raised position, and a keeper or socket for holding the lever when the awning is raised substantially as described.

3. In an awning, the combination with an awning-frame, of means for raising and lOW- ering the same comprising a lever loosely connected with the frame at one end and having an elongated slot for engaging afulcrum-pin, a fulcrum-pinprojecting from the frame, a socket or keeper plate secured below the fulcrum-plate and adapted to engage the free end of the said lever, the construction being such that the lever may be moved longitudinally upon the fulcrum to be brought into engagement with the keeper or socket or to increase its leverage for raising the awningframe, substantially as described.

4. In an awning, the combination with a pivoted frame, of a lever for raising and lowering the same, a stud-plate provided with a stud adapted to engage an eye formed in the frame and an elongated slot formed in the lever, said slot being provided with recesses at its ends, spacing-washers interposed between the parts and mounted upon the stud, a sleeve secured to one end of the lever and adapted to inclose and slide upon the frame, an eye or socket mounted below the fulcrumpin and adapted to receive the lower free end of the lever, and a handle secured to the said lever for moving the same, substantially as described.
