SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented'ruiy 9,19o7.
Application filed March 15,1906. Serial N0. 306,233.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. MoDoNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State oi Nebraska, have invented certain new and useul Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Suspenders, and refers more particularly to the clasps on the ends of the suspender straps.
The main object oi the invention, is the provision oi a device whereby the suspender straps may be quickly released from the garment without necessitating the unbottoning of the supporting loops.
Another object of the invention, is the provision of a suspender clasp which will automatically lock itself the more securely as the weight is applied, which will be simple in construction and practical in operation.
With these and other objects in view, my invention comprises a plate adapted to be applied to the suspender strap, a lever pivoted to the plate having a lip extending inside the point of connection with the plate and adapted to engage the supporting loop, whereby the eccentric pull on the lip automatically locks the clasp, and the invention further consists in certain other novel features of construction and combination o parts substantially as herein disclosed.
Figure l, is a perspective view of my improved suspender as applied to a garment. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional View of the suspender clasp; Fig. 3, is a detail view 0i the parts of the clasp, and Fig. 4, is a perspective View of a modified form oi the invention.
In the drawings: the numeral l, designates the back plate or body o the clasp, which is usually formed with a slot 2, for the reception of the end of the suspender strap 3. The plate tapers toward the lower end and is provided with the pair of parallel right-angled extensions or lugs 4. A clasping lever 5, is provided at its lower end with the pair of parallel ears 6, secured between the parallel supports on the plate, by means oi the rod or pin 7. A curved lip 8, is formed at the base o the lever and extends inside the point of pivotal connection with the plate and forms an eccentric support for the supporting loop 9, secured to the garment. A covering l0, of leather or suitable material, may be secured to the plate and clasp as desired.
In the modified form of the invention, the plate is formed at the upper portion with a buckle ll, so that the clasp may be adjustable on the suspender strap. When it is desired to remove the suspender straps from the loops, it is simply necessary to press the upper end oi the clasp lever, outward. The entire weight on the clasp comes inside the point of pivotal connection to the plate, so that it automatically locks when the 'Weight is applied.
From this description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be evident that I have provided a suspender which 'accomplishes all the objects herein set forth, and which is practical and inexpensive.
I claim:
A suspender clasp comprising a plate having a buckle at its upper end and tapering toward the lower end, said plate having a pair of up-struck ears at its lower end, a flat lever having a curved lip at one end and a pair of ears contiguous to said lip, a pivot pin passing through the ears of the plate and lever, thereby pivotally connecting the lever to the plate with the curved lip inside the point of pivotal connection the free end of the lever curved to engage the face of the plate when the clasp is closed.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES nMcDoNnLL.
Two Witnesses J. W. MARTIN, PAUL L. MARTIN.
