ANDREW J; MCCAULEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Application filed July 9, 1906. Serial No. 325,276.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW .I. MCOAULEY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Catches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a door stop and catch and comprises two parts, one of which is attached to the door and the other to the base board of Wall near the door. One of these parts has a bracket provided with a projecting buffer head and the other part has a bracket provided with spring jaws which ordinarily act as a spring receiver for the buffer head and take up the jar or concussion from same when the door is opened. These jaws also form a catch for holding the door open when desired. This door stop is especially applicable for use in connection with glass doors and prevents the glass from being broken should the door be too forcibly swung open, but it is also useful for all kinds of doors where a combined stop and catch is required.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the part having the buffer head; Fig. 2
is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the part having spring jaws, which act as a resilient stop or as a catch when desired; Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5*5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of the two attachments showing them engaged when used as a catch for keeping the door open.
The part having the buffer head comprises a circular plate 10 forming a bracket with a rounded projecting circular boss 10 under which is a hollow or recess 10. 10 is a cross slot in the middle of the boss l0 and is rabbeted on the inside as at 10, at each side of said slot, so as to prevent a nut from turning when inserted or held in same by a bolt.
The buffer head 11 is of a bulb or pear-like shape having a rounded front end as at ll and contracted to form a neck at 11 terminating at the rear in curved flanges 11 projecting from same and shaped to lit the boss 10". 1]. is a bolt inserted centrally through the head and passing through the slot 10 where it has a nut 11 which holds the head ll in place. The slot is to enable the head to be adjusted to various angles so as to strike the stop centrally and squarely. By loosening the bolt the head can be moved along the slot to the place desired.
The part having the spring jaw's which act as a step, consists of a plate 12 having a curved boss l2" and a hollow or recess 12 and a cross slot 12. This plate or bracket is similar in all respects to that above described.
13 refers to a thin strip of spring metal doubled and bent to form two loops 13 at the base and two pro jecting curved spring arms 13". These are shaped to receive the buffer head and have rounded or curved ends 13, and are attached to the boss 12 by abolt 12 and a nut 12. The jaws are adjustable on the bracket similar to the buffer head 11.
14 are small pointed studs on the back of each bracket and are for attaching a bracket slightly while adjusting each bracket relatively to the other. I
The device acts as a door check when the door is swung-open with ordinary force, the buffer head striking the spring arms causes the same to yield slightly and check the door. For use as a door catch, special effort causes the buffer to enter between the arms, thereby holding the door open. The head of the bolt 12 is squared and fits in a squared depression in the metal strip 13, so that the arms will not turn or swing around.
I claim 1. A- door catch comprising a plate having a rounded slotted boss thereon, spring arms, and a bolt connecting the arms to the boss and extending through the slot and movable along the same to vary the angle of the arms.
2. The combination of a plate having a rounded slotted boss thereon. a door catch member fitting at its rear end against the boss, and a bolt connecting the member to the boss and extending through the slot and movable along the same to vary the angle of the member.
3. A door catch comprising; a plate having a rounded hollow boss thereon, with a slot across said boss, the edges" of which slot are rabbeted on the inner side, and
spring arms secured to the boss by a belt which extends through the slot and has a nut engaged in the rabbet.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
. ANDREW .r. MCCAULEY.
