Description

'UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Asn/ nvr WALRATH AND EDWARD L. maven, or WEEDsPoRT,-NEw Yorin, SMD TRVEB AssIGNoR To SAID WALRATH.I
SILO.
Specioezion ofiLetters Patent.'
Patented July 2, 1907.
'Application filed April 3,1906. Serial Nu. 309,652.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, ABRAM WALRATH and EDWARD LrTnavnn, citizens of the United States, and residents of Wcedsport, in the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Silos, o which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a iull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of silos which are composed of vertical staves bound by hoops and provided with a vertically extended doorway.
The object o the presentv inventiofn is to provide simple, inerrpensive and efficient means or removably securing the doors in the doorway. And a further o'bject ol' the invention is to provide a simple, convenient and reliable brace or maintaining the doorposts straight and parallelA And to that end the invention consists in the improved construction and combination ol parts hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is an elevation'oi a silo embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal transverse section o one o the doors and adjacent portions of the silo'. Fig. 3v.. is a Inrther enlarged vertical transverse section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2: Fig, 4 is a detached perspective view oi one of the silo-doors: and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detaohed plan view of one of the spreader-bars of the silo.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A- denotes the body of the silo which is formed from vertical strives -a a-fbound together by means of hoops -b b emhincing the said body in the usual manner. The body -AM is provided with a vertically extended doorway and with doorposts, c c, at opposite sides of the doorway. Said door-posts nre-provided or lornied with beveled inwardly lacing jainbs -dto which are fitted the vertical edges ol the doors lFor securing the doors in the doorway we employ on one o the vertical edges ol each door an outwardly projecting hook -c-, which has its end portions extending approximately at right angles in opposite directions from the central portion Iand is rigidly attached at one ol said end portions to the exterior ol the door -D and in such n. position as to cause'the central portion ol' said hook to extend directly across the door-post -cd in close proximity thereto while the outer end portion ol1 said hook engages the outer lace o the door-post ns clearly shown in Fig. 2 ol the drawings. The. said hook is capable of preventing the door from droppiilg out ol' the doorway, during the operation ol' sluiting the door vertically in its position as hereinaiter explained.
Near the opposite vertical edge of the door, we employ a suitable clamp -G- for engaging 'the door-post -cthereat.
We do not limit ourselves to the specific forni of clamp shown in the drawings, inasmuch as the salire or `similar effect may be produced by different styles of clamps. The clamp herein shown is pivoted on the.
outer end of a bolt -fwhich passes through'a post gfastened to the door. The engaging part of said' -clanrp is beveled-and bears on the exterior of the doorvpost -'-c-, which is preferably provdedwith a metal strip -hon Awhich the engaging clamp bears.. By turning the clamp o the uppermost door -D-suilficiently to loosen the door thereat on the jamb -dwithout allpwing the clamp to completely lose its hold on the door-post, the said door can be pushed up and reclanxped in its elevated position to form an opening beneath it for removing therethrough ensilage from the silo when required. Each succeeding lower door can be removed as aforesaid,- according to the height of the remaining ensilage. I l
.We place thedoor-posts flush with the exterior of the silo to allow the hoops -b-bto bear on the outer faces of the door-posts and continue directly across the doorway and at the Sametime maintain the hoops in proper Contact with the staves adjacent to the doorposts as shown in Fig. 2 o the drawings.
Our described door-fastening devices are espe cially well adapted for a door which is composed of a tier o transversely disposed stave-sections #jj-9 tiked together' by means or' dowels -c-l'- passing ver tically through said stavo-sections as shown in Figsf'? and 4 of the drawings. 0n a door of this construction, the hook -cand clamp C are attached to opposite ends of one o1' the stave-sections -jwhich possesses the requisite stability to prevent its ilexure.
'.lo maintain the two door-posts straight und parallel, we employ spreader-bars -l-lwhich extend across the doorway and are placed near to the outer faces of the doors and in line with the direction oi the pressure exerted on the door-posts by thc .st-aves aci when the hoops are tightened on the` silo. We forni each of the sprenderfbars A-lof n. straight stout iron or steel rod, the ends ol which are formed with right and leit wood-screws -n -1lwhich are tapered or ginilotpointed, as shown in Fig. 5 o the drawings. Tho
threads oi said screws nre coarse and deep to obtain a secure hold in the wood of the door-posts throughout The aforesaid improved elleets'tro more particularly obtained fromthe arrangement of the spreader-bars being in lines Within the thicknessof the stoves adjacent to the door-posts. Aside from these-improved effects 'we save the time and labor of boring completely through the door-posts and also the expense of nust usually'appiied to spreader bars employed for that purpose.
posts disposed fish with the exterior of the silo and formed with inwardly beveled jumps, doors seated removobly on said jamlis hooks having their end portions extendingy approximately at right anges in opposite directions from the central portions and rigidly attached at oueend portion to the door'zmd having; the outer end pol'- tons hearing on the outer face or' tho adjacent doot-post, clamps 'on the doors engaging the opposite door post, straight sprenderehars formed with right and left threaded wood screws screwed into the doot-posts in linesy within the thirkn s of the stares, and hoops bearing on the outer far. of the door posts and continued across the doorway substantially as set forth and shown.
