Appncniqn fusa october 29. 1906. seran No. 340,994.
To all whom it may concern; y
Be it known that I, VICTOR GERTIN, a citizen `of the United States of America, residing at the city and district oi Montreal, in the 'Provinceof Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsfin Manifold Counter-Sales Check-Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description o i the invention, such as will enable others skilled in lthe art to which it appertainsto/make and use the same. i
My invention relates to manifold, counter sales check books; the object of my invention is to provide a book in which a plurality of folded perforated sheets may be carried, and to provide means 'ior permitting the sheets to be torn off without unfolding the supply of sheets; a further object is to provide means for holding immovable a pluralityof superposed carbon sheets, and for exerting a slight tension on the folded sheetsof paper as they are drawn from the source of supply; a further object is to provide ka source of supply for the sheets with a hinged cover, and means forkeeping the cover closed andfor keeping a sales card on the cover, and to provide means for keeping the folded sheets pressed flat and for maintaining a tension thereon; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in whichdrawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure l is a plan View, showing a triplicate book in open position; Fig, 2 is a side elevation of `the book in open position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal Vertical section 'through one cover, the paper receptacle and connected end of the plate; and Fig. 8 is anL elevation ofthe oppo-` site end of the plate. v
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the covers of the book, 4connected by an intermediate limp binding 3, A paper holdingreceptacle 4 is carried by the cover l, and comprises four walls,`one of which isV shorter than the others. Adjacent one end of the-receptacle, there is providedon the cover .1 a plate 5, having upturned ears 6 adapted to brace lthe'side walls of the receptacle 4. Carried by the ears 6, and extending transversely of the receptacle ,is a rod 7, adapted to urther brace the side walls of the receptacle, and also to i support a rotatable friction sleeve 8 disposed thereon.
.A flexible strip 9 has one edge secured to one of the side walls of the receptacle 4, and has its opposite edge secured to the cover 10 of the receptacle, so asto form a hinge for the cover. v For the purpose of maintaining the cover in closed position, a wire clip has its bent ends 11 pivotally engaged with the side walls of the receptacle 4, and has a resilient central portion 12 adapted to bear on top of the cover 4.
A. plate 13 is carried by the cover 1 Within the receptacle 4, adjacentl one en d thereof. A wire clip 149i 65 slightly resilient material has its ends disposed beneath provided with lines ofl perforations 16, transversely:
thereof.
A plate 17 is `disposed transversely of the limp binding 3, and is provided with resilient ends 18, and at one end is provided with an upturned lug 19. A plate K20 is disposed on the plate '17, and is secured thereto as by means of the rivets 2l. One end of the plate 20 is provided with an upturned flange 22, which flange has therein a vertical 'slot 23, a squared opening 24, and a recessed slot 25. p The opposite end of the plate 20 is provided with an upturned flange 26, provided with a vertical slot 27 adjacent one side, a recessed slot 28 in its center, and a recessed slot 29 at its side opposite the vertical slot 27. The plate 2O is shorter than the plate 17, so that the resilient ends 18 of the latter plate projectbeyond each end ofthe plate 20.
A locking plate 30 is. disposed on the plate 20, and is provided with an upturned edge 31. A wire 32 is provided with bent ends 33, adapted to bear on the resilirent ends 18 of the plate 17, when the wires are disposed in the recessed slots 25 and 29,' the walls of which slots form a support for rockably maintaining the v,plate 30 in position.
The resilient pressure produced by the ends 18 of the plate 17 is exerted through the bent ends 33 of the wire 32, and maintains the locking plate 30 against the folded metallic strips 34, 34, which are provided with shoulders 35. One strip engages the vertical slots 23 and 27, and
the other engages the recessed slot 28 and the opening 24 in the anges 22 and 26 respectively of the plate 20. The strip which is placed with' its shoulders in the recesses 23 and 27, is in a lower plane than the otherstrip. The other strip has the shoulder at one end disposedin the opening 24, and the other shoulder disposed in the recess 28,. so that the lug 19 prevents its accidental're moval when the locking plate 30 is Vswung up on its piv- .10 5
otal support to permit the desired removal of the carbon .carrying members. Each of the carbon carrying members 34 carries a sheet of manifolding paper 36.
By the construction described, a tension is produced on each ofthe carbon carrying members 34 and the pa-v 110 p1ate'37 is secured to the free end oi the cover 2, and is' provided-with a thumb recess 38, so that it is not necesjao sary to raise'the sheets of paper 15 from the cover 2 in order to tear the same from the book. i
Disposed transversely across one end of the cover 10 of the paper receptacle-i, is a strip 39, arranged so as to form a pocket to receive one end of a sales card 40, theopposite end of which is maintained in position by means of the Aresilient portion 12 oi the clip which is pivoted to the side walls ofthe receptacle 4, and which is also adapted to maintain the cover 10 in closed position. The'clip 14 also serves to maintain a slight tension on the supply of paper` Within thevreeeptacle 4, so,
that it may not be withdrawn .too rapidly `in the course of-use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I lclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isc- Y 1.
