' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID T. BAXTER, OF HAMILTON, CANADA.
COMBINED CARBON-ROLL HOLDER AND TEMPORARY BINDER FOR MANIFOLDING TABLETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,113, dated May 14, 1895.
Application filed August l4, 1894:- Serial No. 520,264- I (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LDAVID T. BAXTER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hamilton, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Carbon-Roll Holder and Temporary Binder for Manifolding Tablets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment to the ordinary cover used for manifoldin g salescheck tablets, to serve the two-fold function of temporarily binding the tablet at its stub end to the cover, and holding a roll of carbon-paper from which portions may be drawn as required. I
The nature of my invention will be readily understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which a.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover provided with my attachment securing, a sales-check tablet; Fig. 2, a partial longitudinal section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 3, a sectional View of the base portion of the attachment; Fig. 4, a similar view of the hinged portion of the same; and Fig. 5, a partial vertical section of the attachment, taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
In the drawings, vA is the cover, which consists of two stiff backs joined by a flexible web t.
B is the tablet, which ordinarily consists of a series of leaves with suitable printing and ruling on them, bound together at their upper ends and severally folded upon themselves from their lower ends, with lines of perforations at the folds and near their upper ends to make them readily detachable.
C is the base portion of. the attachment, made from a metal blank suitably shaped and out, which is struck up to afford the ends 'r and intermediate curved back g.
D is the hinged top of the attachment, formed of a metal blank bent to the form shown, and provided with end projections 19, which are bent downward and pivotally connected to the endsoof the base portion by loose rivets, o. The curved rear portion, n, of this top co-operates with the curved back q of the base portion to form a receptacle for the roll E of carbon paper, and the curved forward end, 4%, serves as a binder for both the tablet and the withdrawn portion 6 of the carbon- 55 paper, by being forced down upon them through the positive action, on the curved part m of the hinged top, of clips 7c, pivotally connected by rivets o to the outer faces of the ends 7' of the base portion. The attachment is secured to the cover A by means of rivets 0 passed through the bottom 1 of the base portion.
My combined carbon-roll holder and temporary binder forms a very desirableattachment tocovers for sales-check tablets. The advantage of temporarily binding the tablet to the cover is obvious, and as one cover serves for an indefinite number of tablets, and as at least one fresh leaf of carbon paper is required with each tablet, and often several, either because of'wear or accidental tearing off, the advantage of a large supply of carbon paper conveniently available is also obvious. Where required, the roll may consist of two or more layers of carbon paper.
My attachment has been devised with an especial view to simplicity of construction and durability.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. For use with a manifolding tablet and cover therefor, the attachment comprising in combination a base portion 0 and hinged top D, forming together a receptacle for the carbon-roll, and clips is pivoted upon the base portion for forcing and holding the forwardend of the hinged top down upon the tablet, substantially as described.
2. For use with a manifolding tablet B and cover A'therefor, the attachment comprising in combination the base portion 0 having the upturned ends 'r and upturned curved back q, top D hinged to the base portion and forming with it at its rear end a carbon-roll receptacle, and bent downward at its forward end to serve as a binder for the tablet, and clips is pivoted to the ends of the base portion for forcing the binder down upon the tablet and holding it there, substantially as described.
DAVID T. BAXTER.
