JOHN I. PITTMAN, OF NEW YORK, Y.
Letters Patent No. 85,849, dated Janua/ry 12,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAIR'JLIRIIII)Gil-BOXES.
The 8011061136 referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all" whom it may concern:
' Be it known that 1, JOHN I. PITTM-AN, of New York,
in the county of New York, and State of New York,
, have invented'a new and useful Improvement in Cartridge-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a fiont or outer side view of my invention, partly in section.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same,
taken in the line a: as, fig. 1.
A represents the case of the cartridge-box, which may be constructed of leather, or other suitable material. Leather 'will probably be preferable.
This case may be made in the usual way, and therefore does not require a minute description.
B B represent two wooden blocks, each of which has twenty holesbored in it, said holes being in two rows, of ten each. 7
These holes receive the cartridges, 0, and, consequently, forty cartridges may be inserted in the two blocks.
These blocks are fitted in the case, .one above the other, each block having an upright -1edge or projection, a, at each side, as shown clearly in both figures,
so that the upper block, B, (and it is immaterial which one of the two is placed uppermost,) will not be in contact with the cartridges in the lower block, as will be fully understood by referring to the drawings.
The cartridges, when inserted in the holes in the blocks, project a little above the upper surfaces of the same, so that they may be readily grasped by the fingers, and withdrawn'irom the block.
When the upper block is exhausted of cartridges, it
is drawn out of the case A, and-also the lower filledblock, and the empty one placed in the bottom of the case, and the filled one placed in on the top of it.
The case A has a partition, 11, secured in it longitudinally, to form a narrow compartment, 0, in which small paper boxes, D, are placed, to contain extra cartridges, 0.
By the arrangement it .will be seen that the usual or required number (forty) of cartridges, 0, is securely,
retained in position within the case A. They cannot come in contact with each other, and be bruised, or casually exploded, and they may be drawn individually,
as required for use, from the holes in the blocks with the greatest facility, while a requisite quantity of extra cartridges, 0, may be placed in the box. Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent Constructing the blocks B B with an upright projection or ledge, a, at each end, to prevent the bottom of the upper block coming in contact with the cartridges in the lower one, substantially as shown and described.
v JOHN I. PITTMAN.
