Description

- UNITED STATES y PATENT OFFICE.'
, JERRY o. LIBERTY, or EAST'HAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS,ASSIGNoRoF ONE'-l f HALE To THOMAS E. LYNN, or EASTHAMPTQN, MASSACHUSETTS.
SKIRT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed October l5, 1906. Serial No. 338,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JERRY C. LIBERTY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Easthampton, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Skirt-Hangers, of which the ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is toprovide a skirt supporter or hanger of extreme simplicity and cheapness of construction, and one which is of entire efficiency and unusually desirable.
The improved Skirt supporter is hereinafter fully described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, and defined in the claims.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of the supporter as inA use with a skirt engaged thereby and hung therefrom. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing certain particular formations of a length of wire from which prominent portions of this device are constituted. Fig. 3 is an edgewise view of a coil including part of the device illustrating ar slight modification in the centralizing means for the supfporting rod of the hanger. Fig. 4 is a view o the parts shown in Fig. 3 as seen at right angles thereto. Fig. 5 is a perspective representation of the parts and formations provided for constituting the connection between the supporting rod and the garment holding arm of the hanger.
In the drawings,-A represents a centrallyT and vertically arranged supporting rod by which the opposite upwardly and outwardly extended hanger arms B B are sustained. Said rod has a hook a at its upper end and an eye b at its lower end, engaged around the tubular metallic connection piece c.
The arms B B and the provisions for rendering them resilient are all comprised within a single length of suitably stout spring wire having coils, bends, formations and arrangements as follows: The single length of wire is formed by the middle portion thereof into a horizontal eye d and has portions near the middle formed into a plurality of coils f f arranged in vertical planes at opposite sides of the axis of the eye, the wire comprises portions 10, 10, op ositely upwardly and outwardly extendedD in continuation from said coils, formed with return bent loops 12, 12, to make' stops or shoulders, thence extended with downward and outward inclination in members 13, 13, while their extremities 14,
14, are downwardly and inwardly arranged more or less nearly parallel with the portions 10 and have eyes 15, 15, at their approximate ends which are engaged about the tube or connection piece C. The intermediate portion of the supporting rod is centralized by enga ing through the aforementioned horizonta eye d. The downwardly and outwardly inclined members 13, '13, of the symmetrical appliance are encircled by tubular wood or other non-metallic pieces g g which, advantageously, may be upwardly tapered,- these pieces serving to prevent the skirt from becoming creased across the waist band and from becoming rusted or otherwise marked by the wire. The connection piece C is preferably made in the form of a tubular rivet, originally with one end upset or flanged, the opposite end to be also upset after the assemblage of the parts in the course of construction of the device.
With an inspection of Fig. 1, it is to be understood that the supporter having a skirt engaged thereon at the downwardly and outwardly inclined opposite portions 13, Y13, is
under a degree of stress or tension as imposed by the weight of the skirt and operating against the reaction of the coils, so that the arms B comprising the upper and lower lengths of Wire 10, 10, and 14, 14, are slightly depressed to less steep inclinations than would normally be assumed thereby if the garment were to be lifted off from the hanger.
I may, as a means for centralizing the supporting wire or rod A relatively to the opposite inclined arms, employ, instead of the horizontal eye d, a cylindrical block d2 having a vertical hole d3 bored therethrough, such block being located inside of the coils f f and traversed through the vhole d3 therein by' the intermediate portion of the supporting rod.
I claim 1. A skirt supporter consisting of a central vertical suspension rod, and a pair of oppositely arranged frame-likeV arms, each consisting of separated upwardly and outwardly extended, approximately parallel, upper and lower portions of wire, having a uniting portion at their outer ends upwardly and inwardl inclined, the lower portions of both arms having connections with a lower por- IOO tion of the suspension rod, and the upperwire I portions of the arms having coils at the middle of the device, and means of engagement between an intermediate portion of the suspension rod and the coil-provi ded portions of said arms, whereby the latter are restrained in symmetrically opposite positions.
2. A skirt supporter consisting oiA a centralvertical suspension rod, having a hook atits upper end, and a pair of oppositely arranged frame-like arms, each consisting of separated upwardly and outwardly approximately parallel upper and lower portions of wire having a uniting portion at their outer ends upwardly and inwardly inclined, and provided with tubular non-inetallie pieces in encircling engagement therearound, the lower Wire portions of both arms having connections with a lower portion of the suspension rod, and the upper wire portions of the arms having coils at the middle ofthe device, andmeans of engagement between an intermediate portion of the suspension rod and the coil provided portions of said arms, for the purpose set forth.
3. A skirt support comprising a single length of wire, the intermediate portion thereof being formed into a plurality of coils, and having portions oppositely upwardly and outwardly extended, and thence return bent and extended with a downward and outward inclination, and having their extremities downwardly and inwardly bent and arranged substantially parallel with the aforesaid portions incliningly extended from the coils, together with a supporting red to the lower portion of which the proximate extremi ties of the said wire are connected, said supporting rod having at its intermediate portion a disposition between said coils, and means for retaining said rod centrally relatively to the coil comprising wire formed parts.
4. A skirt support comprising a single length ol' wire, the middle portion of" which is formed in a horizontal eye, having portions near the middle formed into a plurality ol' vertical coils, having portions oppositely upwardly and outwardly extended, from said coils, and formed with return bent loops,
thence extended with a downward and outward inclination, and having their extremities downwardly and inwardly bent and arranged substantially parallel with the aforesaid. portions oppositely extended from the coils, together with a supporting rodv to the lower portion of which the proximate extremities of the said Wire are connected, said supporting rod having at its intermediate portion an engagement through said horizontal eye, and. having a hook at its upper end.
5. In a skirt support the combination with a single length of wire, the intermediate portion thereof being formed into a plurality of coils, and having portions oppositely upwardly and outwardly extended, thence return bent and extended with a downward and outward inclination, and having their extremities downwardly and inwardly, bent, arranged substantially parallel with the aforesaid portions oppositely extended from the coils, and formed with eyes at their ends, of a connection piece about which said eyes are engaged, and having a lower end eye e11- gaged with said connection piece, having at its intermediate portion a disposition between said coils, and means for retaining said rod centrally relatively to the coilcomprising 'wire formed parts.
