To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN E. WVATKINs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to attachments for vises, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a novel attachment that will normally be held in engagement with the aws of a vise, irrespective of their position for gripping pipes or tubes of various diameters.

Another object of this invention is to provide a vise with detachable clamps for gripping pipes and tubes and maintaining them at any desired angle with relation to the jaws of the vise.

A further object of this invention is to provide the aws of a vise with a simple and inexpensive clamp that can be easily and quickly placed in position and readily removed at any desired time.

With the above and other objects in view,

' which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a conventional form of vise consisting of a body portion 1 having a fixed aw 2 and an adjustable jaw 3, said jaws being provided with clamping confronting faces 4.

My improved attachment comprises two clamps 5, having confronting faces 6 which are provided with a plurality of serrated recesses 7 adapted to form oval openings when the clamps 5 are placed together. The workholding clamps 5 are cut away on their outer faces, from a point adjacent one end to a point adjacent the other end, there being left at each end of said outer face of the clamps a substantially L-shaped flange 7, the longer arms of which flanges rest against the ends of the vise jaws 4 when the clamps are placed in the vise in the position shown in Fig. 3, and the shorter arms of which flanges rest upon the upper face of said vise jaws when the clamps are in this position. The clamps 5 are also cut away or recessed transversely on their outer faces as at 8, this transverse recess being made substantially midway between the ends of said clamps and, at the ends of this transverse cut-away portion the faces of the jaws are rounded as at 14 to provide curved bearing surfaces in order that a hearing for the clamps on the vise jaws may be provided at any inclination in which the clamps may be placed in the vise jaws. As will be seen by reference to Fig. 2, when the clamps are placed vertically in the visejaws, and it is desired to give to the clamps an inclined position, it is only necessary to loosen the vise aws, and then incline the clamps as desired, without removing them from between the vise jaws, and then tightening the vise jaws to hold the clamps in the inclined position. Thus, by the construction shown, the clamps may be firmly held between the vise jaws so as to hold a piece of work in a vertical position, in which position the jaws are shown in Fig. 3, or, to hold a piece of work in horizontal position, in which the aws would be disposed vertically, as shown in Fig. 1, or, to hold a piece of work at an incline, .for which latter position of the work the jaws may be inclined from a vertical to substantially a 45 angle at each side of the vertical line, as shown in Fig. 2 of thedrawings.

In Fig. 5 of the drawing, I have illustrated a slight modification, wherein one of the edges of one of the recesses 7 protrudes slightly be 0nd the edge of the confronting recesses, wiereby when a pipe or tube 12 is mounted in the recesses and clamped therein, a tendency upon the part of the pipe or tube 12 to rotate will be prevented, the edge 11 more firmly gripping the pipe or tube 12 when the same is partly rotated. In cutting away the clamps 5, as at 8, and providing the curved bearing surface 14, the attachment can be tilted at an angle with relation to the jaws 2 and 3, whereby a pipe or tube clamped in the recesses 7 will be conveniently held.

It will be apparent from the illustration of my invention that I have devised a novel vise attachment wherein a spring is em ployed for normally maintaining the attachment in engagement with the jaws of the vise, irrespective of their position.

It will be obvious that the clamps 5 can be provided with a plurality of recesses of various sizes and contours to accommodate articles having curved surfaces to be grip ed in the vise. The clamps 5 are refera ly made of strong and durable metal? whereby they will withstand the rough usage to which they are subjected.

Such changes in the size, proportion and minor details of construction as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An attachment for vises, comprising a pair of work-holding clamps adapted to be re ceived between the aws of a vise, and provided on their outer faces adjacent each end with substantially L-shaped flanges adapted to engage the jaws of a vise when the clamps are placed longitudinally between the vise jaws, and having transverse recesses on said outer faces, the said clamps at the ends of said transverse recesses having rounded J QHN E.
