T.' CLIEECEDEUSH, CE NEw HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, AssIGNoE To HnrrsELE, HENRY r. osTEAM, AND T. E. CARPENTER, 0E SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 85,788, dated J/nuary 12, 1869.
-oun--u To? BLOW-GUN.
The Schedule referred -to in thesevLettevs Patent and making part of thevsame.
To all whom it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, T. ILIEEORD BUSH, of New Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement-in.
and represent, in-
'Figure'1, a 'side `view of my improvement, andin Figure 2, a longitndinalsection ofthe same. Similar letters of reference, when they occur in th separate views, indicate like parts.
My invention relates to an improved toy air-gun', and consists of a tube or barrel, placed upon a stock, and furnished at the breechwith an aperture for the reception of the arrow or cartridge. Connecting with this barrel, atthe breech, is placed a iieXible tube, or its equivalent, which extends througha portion of the stock, and is furnished with a lmonth-piece. After the arrow or cartridge 'has been placed in the barrel, the mouth is applied to the said mouth-piece, and, by the force ofthe breath, the arrow or cartridge is ejected from thebarrel, and, by practice, may be thrown a considerable distance with great accuracy.
The object of my invention is to finnish a game for young people, which will be amusing, as well as beneticial to the health, by developing and expanding the lungs, and by otherwise beneting the parties using it.
To enableothers slnlled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to ldescribe .the construction and operation of the same.
VA is a tube. or barrel, which may be made om a piece of common gas-pipe, or other suitable, material.
.This barrel is open at both ends, and in the' upper side,
near the breech, an aperture is formed sufficiently large to enable the arrow or cartridge to be placed in the said barrel.
B is a ferrule or slide, arranged to move upon the barrel A. for the purpose of "covering, when in use, the aperture in the same, and to prevent the escape of is held. v
In the end of the said barrel, and extending down the centre of the stock, say one-third its length, then C is the shoulder-piece o'r stock, in which the barrel .outward to the surface, a hole is bored. Through this said hole a liexible tube, D, orits equivalent, is passed,- one end connecting with the end of the barrel, and the other, which extends beyond the stock to any length required, is furnished with a mouth-piece, E. The ob'- ject of this tube is to bring the mouth-piece in the proper position for use when the head'is bent` forward for the purpose of taking aim.
This completes the construction of my improvement. The operation is as follows:
First, the ferrule or slide B is thrown forward-to the position shown in red, iig. 1, and inblack, g, 2. The arrow or cartridge is then inserted into the barrel through this opening, as shown in red, iig. 2. Afterthe arrow or cartridge has been thus placed in the barrel, the ferrule or slide is drawn back, as shown in red, iig. 2. This closes the barrel. The month is then applied-to the mouth-piece E, and, bylblowing through' the tube D,
the arrow or cartridge is carried from the barrel, andV may bel thrown to a greater or less distance, according .to the force of the blast given from the lungs.
My gun may be aimed' as well as other guns, andl the arrow or cartridge thrown with great accuracy.
I do not confine myself to the use of the form of arrows shown in red, tig. 2, as a cartridge may be formed, made of any suitable material.`
I do not broadly `claim ,an air-gun for throwing the arrow or cartridge by the force of the breath, as such is not new. Y
What I do claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The said gun, when furnished with a slide, B, stock C, and exible tubeD, or its equivalent, i the manner and for the purpose substantially as'herein specied. -v
T. lCLIFFORD BUSH.
