UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST TVENGENROTH, OF TROY, NEWV YORK.
BLOW-GUN.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,513, dated October 9, 1883.
. Application filed August 17, 1883. (No model.)
secured to the stock at the breech of the barrel. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved toy airgun, and Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal central section of the same with the barrel in position for inserting the missile.
Similar letters of reference indicate the'corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the stock of my improved air-gun, which is provided with an interior air-channel, a, and a lateral opening, a, in which a flexible blo\v-tube,a having Y amouth-piece, a is inserted. The stock is provi dedwith a longitudinal groove, 1), that extends from the end of the air-channel a toithe end of the stock. Near the end ofthe groovebthe barrel B is hinged by means of a transverse pivot-pin, b, which passes through holes arranged in the stock, and through asmall sleeve, b, arranged under the barrel B, so that the latter can be I placed in an inclined position to the stock, as shown in Fig. 2. The barrel B is provided at its breech end with an outwardlyextending flange, (I, so as to make a perfectly air-tight connection between the stock and an elastic cushion, d, at the end of the air-channel a, said. cushion being made of rubber or other suitable material, provided with an opening for the passage of the air to the barrel. Small 0 sights c a can be arranged on the stock and the barrel.
To use the toy air-gun the barrel is first placed into inclined position, and the pea or other missile then inserted into the breech of 5 the barrel, which latter is then depressed, so that the flange at the breech end presses tightly against the elastic cushion, and is held in position by the same. The gun is then raised to the shoulder and aimed at a suitable point, after which the missile is projected from the barrel by a blast of air blown into the mouthpiece (f.
The essential advantage of my toy air-gun consists in the air-tight connection that is made between the stock and the breech of the barrel, and in the facility by which the missile can be inserted into the barrel at the breech and the latter returned into its position for throwing the missile.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a toy air-gun, the combination, with a. stock having an air-channel, and a blow-tube communicating therewith, of a barrel hinged to the stock, and of a perforated elastic cushion secured to the stock at the breech end of the barrel, substantially as set forth.
In'testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres- 7o ence of two subscribing witnesses.
