BLOW-GUN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed May 18,1906. Serial No. 317,563.
To all whom it concern;
zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in thecounty of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blow-Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a blow gun which has certain novel features of construction; theobject being to provide a light, portable, pneumatic tube having especially a tapered or p'artiall tapered bore in which is used a flossed or eathered projectile; amouth piece is also provided, and the device as a whole is 7 made very' light, compact and serviceable for amusement purposes, target practice, or It has a wide range parlor or ona lawn, to destroying small game I in a field. .I accomplish these purposes by the. means shown in t ing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail of same. Fig. 3 is a rear end view and Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side viewof theprojectile.
refers to a neumatic tube which is preferably made 0 wood.
10 is the breech having an inlet 10 and e accompanying draw- 'lO is the outlet or mouth of the bore.
The tube 10 has a tapered or converging bore 10 toward the muzzle or mouth of the n. This is preferably tapered about onea lfthe lengthof the tube to 10X although it may be tapered nearly the whole length of same. .From 10X to the mouth of the gun the bore is made practically with a uniform diameter 10 less in diameter than the bore in b'reechof gun. 7
On the frontend of the tube I preferably place-abrassor metal ferrule 11 to. prevent 'splitting of the tube and also a similar ferrule Y Be it known that I, JOHN ScnULTz, a cit1- 11 at the rear end. On the rear end of the tube is a mouth piece-12 having a sleeve 12 which engages the bore 10. .This is preferably removable ancl may be made of wood or metal or any suitable material. The tube 10 is preferably of one diameter throughout its entire len th exteriorly.
13 is the projectile. This consists of a short, metal stub or rod having a pointed end.
13 and an enlargement or head 13; at-
tached to this is a spreading ilossed or feathered; or brush like, tail piece 14 which normally spreads out in fan shape.
In using the gun the projectile is inserted in the breech of the tube, as shown in Fig. 2. This compresses the tail piece 14. The user then blows inthe tube and this tends to throw the fibers or hairs of the tail piece outwardly, thus completely filling out the tube and causing the same to be propelled forward. As the projectile gains momentum it finally passes out of the mouth of the gun where the bore is uniform at a greatly increased speed and may be directed to a suitable target or object.
It will be thus seen that my invention provides a simple and effective device or weapon for target practice, amusement and other purposes as specified.
What I claim, is:
A pneumatic gun having a tube provided with a tapered bore for most of its length and a concentric bore of decreased and uniform diameter in the muzzle of the gun.
In testimony -whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SCHULTZ. l/Vitnesses:
SIGNA FELTsKoG, H. G. BATCHELOR.
