Description
PATENTED JUNE 25, 1907.
- G. NICHOLSON. PIPE WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED MAY 19. 1906.
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE NICHOLSON, OF ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed May 19,1906. Serial No. 317,766-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE NICHOLSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the town of Orangeville, in the county of Dufferin, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Pipe-Wrench, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to pipe wrenches, and from the simplicity of the construction, together with the durability, gives an advantage'over the ordinary cumbersome wrench. By my method of construction of the jaws of the wrench, the pipe may be gripped or disengaged by simply raising or lowering the handle of the wrench, thus facilitating the screwing and unscrewing of the adjusting nut, every time the wrench is put 011 or taken from off the pipe, and also the rapidity upon which the adjusting nut may be moved upon the shank. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1. is a perspective view of the pipe wrench. Fig. 2. is a vertical section of the pipe wrench.
Similar letters refer to throughout the several views.
My invention relates to a pipe wrench, made from suitable material, forming in combination, a threaded, shank part a, the handle b, and the fixed head or jaw c. The fixed head or jaw c, is substantially formed on the outer end. of the shank part a, and at right angles thereto. The fixed head or jaw c, is so bent that it will readily conform to the pipe, and has its inner face serrated for the purpose of gripping the pipe more certainly. Formed longitudinally in the inner side of the threaded shank part a, is a channel 6. Adapted to engage in the channel a, is a ribf, integral on the back of the slidable jaw g, the object of the rib f, being to prevent the slidable aw g, from turning with the adjusting nut. The slidable jaw g, is at right angles to the shank a, and in relative position with the fixed head or jaw c, and is likewise serrated for the purpose of more certainly gripping the pipe, and is adapted to be adjusted by the adjusting nut. Integral with the lower part of the slidable jaw g, is a lip h, adapted to engage in the circumferential groove i, in the adjusting nut Loosely surrounding the threaded shank part a, is a strap 76, having its ends pivoted to the sides of the slidable similar parts jaw g, by rivets Z, for the purposeof keeping the slidable jaw g, in relative position with the fixed head or jaw c. The strap 7c,-being loose enough to allow the slidable jaw 9, free play in gripping or disengaging the pipe, by means of raising or lowering the handle I), of the wrench.
Screwed on the threaded part of the shank a, and adapted to adjust the slidable jaw g, is the circular screw threaded adjusting nut j. The thread in the adjusting nut j, is doubled, thereby making the travel more rapid and enabling the adjusting nut to be more quickly adjusted. The angle and size of the fixed jaw may be varied, to adapt the wrench to different sizes of pipe.
hen the wrench is fitted on the pipe, the pipe being in a horizontal position, to
, turn the pipe, press the handle of the wrench in the direction the pipe is desired to be turned, which causes the slidable jaw to tighten on the pipe and to be drawn closer to the fixed head or jaw, creating a fulcrum between the operating handle and slidable jaw. To prevent the pipe from turning with the wrench the serrations formed on the inside of the fixed head or jaw and the slidable jaw cut into the pipe, thus preventing the pipe from turning with the wrench. When it is required to remove the wrench from OH the pipe, the pressure is relinquished from the handle of the wrench, thus allowing the slidable jaw to open, it being adapted to be held loosely by the strap and lip supporting it. To turn the pipe in an opposite direction all that is necessary is to revert the wrench to the other position required.
What I claim as new and desire to secure b y Letters Patent is 1. In a pipe wrench, formed in combination with a threaded shank part, a handle and a fixed head or jaw, said fixed head or jaw formed at the outer end and at right angles to said shank part, said fixed head having its gripping face serrated, a longitudinal channel formed in inner side of said shank part, a slidable jaw at right angles to said shank part, said slidable jaw adapted to be adjusted by the adjusting nut, said slidable jaw having its gripping face serrated, a strap surrounding said shank said strappivotally attached to said slidable jaw by rivets, a rib integral on the back of said slidable jaw, said rib adapted to engage in said channel, a lip integral with the lower part of said slidable jaw, said lip adapted to engage in the cir- ICC IIO
cumferential groove in the adjusting nut, in and for the purposes specified.
2. In a pipe wrench, formed in combination with a threaded shank part, a handle and a fixed head or jaw, said fixed head or jaw formed at the outer end and at right angles to said shank part, said fixed head having its gripping face serrated, a longitudinal channel formed in inner side of said shank part, a slidable jaw at right angles to said shank part, said slidable jaw adapted to be adjusted by the adjusting nut, said slidable jaw having its gripping face serrated, a strap surrounding said shank, said strap pivotally attached to said slidable jaw by rivets,
a rib integral on the back of said slidahle jaw, said rib adapted to engage in said channel, a lip integral with the lower part of said slid able jaw, said lip adapted to engage in the circumferential groove in the adjusting nut, a circular twin threaded adjusting nut screwed on said shank, said adjusting nut having a circumferential groove, in and for the purposes specified.
Dated at Toronto, the 18th day of April 1906.
