Description
JOHN A. REED, OF MONON, INDIANA.
DOOR-CHECK.
Speefication of Letters Patent.
PatentedJune 18, 1907.
Appleation filed October 29, 1906. Serial No 841,143.
Be it knewn that I, JOHN A. REED, acitizen of the United States, residing at Menen, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful 1mprevements in Deer-Checks; and I de declare the fellewing te be a full, clear, and exact deseriptien of the inventien, such as Will enable ethers skilled in the. art te w hich it appertains te make and use the same.
This inventien relates te door checks.
The object of the inventien is te provide a door check fer supperting a door and lecking said door against accidental release.
In the accmpanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts,Figure 1 represents a front elevatien of a pertien of a door and frame, showing this inventien applied therete; Fig. 2
represents an enlarged plan view of the form of check shewn in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents a perspeetive view of the slide shewn in Fig. 1 with the parts separated and in pesitien readily te be assembled. Fig. 4 represents a front elevatien of a pertien of a door and frame shewing anether ferm of the invention; Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the form shewn in Fig. 4 detached; and Fig.
6 represents a vertical transverse sectien taken threugh the slide shewnsin Figs. 4 and 5. Fig. 7 represents a lengitudinal vertical sectien thereef.
In the form illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the inventien is shown applied te a door 21, the guide red 26 being arranged herizentally with ene end bent and secured te the door frame, the bend therein being designed te limit the mevement ei the slide 27 in ene direetien and the ether end of said red being bent te limit the rn0ve1nent of said slide in the ether directien. A brace bar is pivetally cennected at ene end te the slide 27 and te the door 21 at its. ether end by means e a plate 22 having spaced. j perferated lateral ears 23, and a pin er bolt 24 is passed threugh said ears and the end of the bar 25. The slide 27 is preferably made in the form of a bleek 28 with a longitudinal recess 29 te re ceive the guide red 26 in which it slides and with recesses, as 30, arranged in its upper face at eppesite sides of said lengitndinal recess 29. Screw threaded apertures, are ier1ned in the bettem walls of the recesses, as 30, te receive screw threaded ends of belts 31 and 32.
35 is shaped te fit in A packing 33 is arranged in said recess 29 belew the guide red 26 and a packing 34 fits in the recesses 29 and abeve said guide red 26. A tep bearing plate sa1d recesses 29 and 30 over the packing 34 and has apertures 36 and 37 therein Whch register with the apertnres, in the Walls of the recesses 30, and threugh which the screw belts 31 and 32 pass. Stout spiral springs 38 and 39 are mennted en these belts between their heads and the plate te give a yielding actien te the hearing plate 35.
In'the ernt1illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 a slide red er guide 40 is eflset ren1 and se-' curedto a door by means of attaching plates 41 and 42 having lugs 43 and 44preferably made integral therewith, the red 40being secured er r1veted te said lugs. A slide 50 is meunted en the red 40 and is liniited in its n1eve1nent thereen by the end lugs 43 and 44. I. he brace bar 45 is pivetally cennected at ene end te ene member of the slide and its enter end is cennected te the door frame by means of a plate 46 having spaced ears 47 and 48 between which the bar 46 is arranged and piveted en apin er belt 4.9. The slide 50 is eempesed of two members 51 and 60 fastened tegether by screws, as 52. The bettem 1nernber 51 has a recess 53 extending 1ngitudinally thereef with. an enlargement 54 intermediately thereef ferming a secket. A packing strip 55 is arranged in the betten1 of the recess 53 en whichthe lewer face of the red 40 slides. Another paeking strip 56 is dispesed over the red 40 and has a circular center pertien te retal hearing plate in the form 01 a disk 57 having eppesitely extending arms 5Sand 59 is dispesec in said rnember 51 over the packing strip 57, the upper aces of said arrns being inclined and the lewer faces straight. The te p member 60 has a reund secket 61 therein te register with the secket 54 in the 1nernber 51. This secket 61 has a eentral screw-threaded opening 62 in its tep Wall inte which a set screw 63 is serewed. The walls of this secket 61 gradually cenverge teward the opening 62. T he 1ne1nber 60 has recesses 64 and 65 at eppesite sides e the s0c'ket with the bettem walls thereef inclined te fit the inclined faces of the arms 58 and 59 01? the plate 57. A small washer 66 and a larger washer 67 are dispesed in the secket 61 against which the inner end ei the screw 63 bears. A ceiled spring 68 of stifl' site is fitin the secket 54.. A

dispesed in the secket 61 with ene end resting posed within the spring 68 in the ernbodment shown to reinforce and strengthen it.
It is to be understood that while this check is shown applied to er door, it may be used for any other purpose for which it is adapted.
Having thus described n1y invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- 1. In er door check the combination of a guide rod rigidly secured a.t one end to one side of the door, 21, s1ide mounted on said rod and comprising a recessed member ha.ving a spring pressed hearing pla.te fitting in sa.id recess over said rod whereby the rod. is clamped between said recessed menlber and sad plat and 'rictionally held thereby, and a brace pvotally connected with sad slide and With the door frame.
2. In 2. door check the combination of a guide rod fixed at one end to one side of the door, 2. slide mounted on said rod and comprising a recessed member having a spring pressed hearing plate fitting in sad recess over said rod and engagmg said ro d to clamp it between said recessed member and said plate, means for reglilating the tension of said spring, and a. brace pivotally connected with said slide and with the door frame.
3. In 2. door check the combinaton of 2. gude rod mounted on and spacer1 from one side of the door, a slide mounted on sad rod and comprising a recessed 1nember having packing disposed theren 011 opposite sides of said rod, a late arranged over said packing, a top mem er having a socket, a spring disposed in said socket an 1 hearing on said plate, means for regulating the tension of said spring, and abrace plvot-ally connected with said slide and with the door frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscrbing witnesses.
JOHN A. REED.
