Description

No.857,29'3. v v PATENTED JUNE18,'1907. c. L. MEYBRS. Y
BRAID PACKET.
APPLICATION I'ILED we. 24, 1 06.
THE NORRIS PETERS co. WASHINGTON, n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'OHARLES L. MEYERS,'OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
BRAlD-PACKET.
adapted to expose a small portion. of the goods for examination while protecting the main portion from damage due to handling. The whole forming an attractive packet in which the goods are offered to the purchaser.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described.
The aocomp anying drawings form a part of this specification and show a preferred form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a face view of the packet. Fig. 2 is a corresponding longitudinal section, and
' Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank before folding to form the envelop, andv showing the interior face thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
A is the front of the envelop, A A the sideflaps, A the bottom-flap and A closing-flap, all in a single sheet as usual in envelop manufacture. The front has two outs preferably crescent-shaped or semi-circular in form produced transversely, one, marked a, near the upper end, and the other, (2 near the mid length, forming two tongues B and C with their curved, edges presented toward each other. The envelop is completed by folding the side and bottom flaps upon each other and gumming in place as usual, leaving the closing-flap open for the insertion of the goods.
Specification of Letters Patent.

a to the exterior and its extremity tucked through the lower cut a to the interior beneath the tongue C. Thus conditioned the gum on the closing-flap A may be moistened and the envelop permanently sealed, the color, width, texture and other characteristics of the braid being easily ascertainable by examination of the exposed end, while the main portion is securely'protected against damage by handling and exposure to dust or the fading action of light.
The upper cut a should be made at a point a little below the line of the upper edge of the bundle, when the latter is in place in the envelop, so that the free end M will extend smoothly through the out a without tearing the edges of the latter.
In the most complete form of the invention the tongue C is provided on its inner face with a spot of gum or other adhesive which when moistened and pressed against the end of the braid holds the latter flatly distended for examination and also prevents the removal of the bundle from the envelop; it also adds to the appearance of the packet by obviating the unsightly effect of a loosely flying end. When thus arranged the closing-flap A may be merely tucked in to cover the upper end of the bundle, if preferred, and the sealing gum thereon may be omitted.
By making the openings in the face of the envelopin the form of semicircular cuts, suflicient area for the easy insertion of the free end is provided, while the tongues produced by such cuts cover the portions of the openings not occupied by the free end of the braid and protect the main portion.
The envelop may be colored or otherwise ornamented to harmonize with the contents and enhance the appearance of the exposed sam lo, and may bear a printed description of the goods and other information relating thereto.
The proportions of the envelop may be varied to conform to the size and shape of the openings to the interior and adhesive means for fastening the free end. 7
2. In a packet for braid and the like, an envelop closed at the ends and having cuts in its face forming two tongues, in combination with a bundle of braid received therein and having a free end passed through one of said cuts from the interior of said envelop to the exterior, and the extremity of such end passed through the other of said openings from the exterior to the interior, and an adhesive on the inner face of the second of said tonlgues, for engaging and holding said free en 3. In a packet for braid and the like, an envelop closed at the ends and having cuts in its face forming two tongues, one above the other, and an adhesive on the inner face of the lowermost, in combination with a piece of such braid wound to form'a rectangular bundle and received in said envelop, and a 1 free end on said bundle extending from the interior of said envelop through the uppermost of said cuts to the exterior and its extremity passed through the lowermost of said cuts to the interior and secured by said adhesive.
4. In a packet for braid and the like, an envelop, sealed at both ends tongues B and C therein formed one above the other by semicircular cuts a a in the face of said envelop, in combination with a bundle of braid received in said envelop, a free end M of such braid extended through said cuts, and an adhesive on the inner face of the lowermost tongue 0 for holding said free end in place and preventing the removal of said bundle.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
