Be it known that I, EDWARD F. KUNATH, a citizen of the United States, residingin' Jersey City, in the county of Hudson andSt-ate of 'New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to theribbon mechanism of typewriting machines and articular'ly to means for bringing into use ifferent colors of ribbon at will. i
I provide two or more separate ribbons'of different colors and movable independently of one another to cover the printing point.
In the preferred form of the invention, the
ribbons are superposed or placed one in front of another'in front of the platen, and means either ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point during the type strokes while the other ribbon remains idle. l 'l I illustrate my invention as applied to the well ,known Underwood front strike writing machine, in which s ools carrying the usual ribbon are mounte upon vertical axes one at'e'ach side of the printing oint'in front of the platen. stretch a short ribbon of red or other special color, which is wound by means of spools placed at the extreme sides of the machine. The short special ribbon may in some cases be endless; and in such a case two other spools are placed at the front of the machine so that theendless ribbon winds around four spools and incloses the usual ribbon and its s ools. Winding means are provided for t e endless ribbon; and I also provide an individual carrier or vibrator for each ribbon, one carrier in front of the other. Said carriers'are shown movable up [and down by means of levers. In a typewritingmachine, having types, type operating mechanism and a platen, the combination of ribbon-vibrating devices including a pair of carriers, and means to cause the type-operating mechanism to recipro: cate either carrier at the type strokes While the other remains idle, or to render both carriers inoperative, at will.
4. In a typewriting machine having a platen, types mounted to strike upon the visible side thereof, and a type-operating mechanism, the combination of ribbonvibrating devices including a plurality of ribbon carriers mounted one in front of the.-

7. In a front strike writing machine, the
combination with a platen and types mounted to strike upon the front side thereof, of a plurality of sets of ribbon spools, aplurality of ribbon carriers one in front of the other and in front of the platen, a pair of independently operable levers mounted side by side and connected to a member reciprocating at the type strokes, and means for either causing said reciprocatingmember to operate either lever or throwing the levers simultaneously out of operation, "at will. 8. In a typewrit ng machine, the combination with a plurality of ribbon carriers, of
a member reciprocating at the type strokes,
a pair of actuators mounted upon said reciprocating member, one for operating each of said ribbon carriers, and means for rendering either actuator efi'ectivewhile the other is idle, or for rendering both actuators ineffective during the reciprocations of said reciprocating member, at will.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with types and a platen, of a plurality ofribbon vibrating devices each including a projecting pin,- a member reciprocating at the type strokes, and a device upon said reciprocating member and provided With openings for said pins, and adjustable means I for adjusting said device so that-one opening may engage one pin thereby to actuate the corresponding ribbon vibrator, while the other opening is out of engagement with the other pin, and for simultaneously throwing both of said openings out of engagement with the pins, as desired.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with types and a platen, of a plurality of ribbon vibrating levers having projecting pins, a member reciprocating at the type strokes, a device mounted upon said recipro eating member and having openings "for engaging said pins one at a time, adjustable means for adjusting said device in engagement with either of said pinsand' for throwing it out of engagement with both of said pins simultaneously, and means for detain- 'ing said device where so adjusted.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with types and a platen, of a plurality of IlbbOIl carriers, levers connected to said carriers, a member reciprocating at the type strokes, actuators 1 mounted upon said reciprocating member and connectible' to either of said levers at will, a finger piece mounted upon the framework of the 1I1t chine, means connecting said finger piece .to saidactuators, and means for detaining sa d superposed between the spools, means for Winding the ribbons upon both pairs o1 spools, ribbon-vibrating devices, and means to render the-vibrating devices inoperativev or to cause either ribbon to be vibrated to cover and uncover the printing point at the type strokes independently of the other ribbon; V e

In a typewriting machine having a platen and types mounted to strike upon the front thereof, the combination of a pair of ribbonspools in frontof the platen, spool-' Winding means, an endless ribbon surround.- ing said spools-and their ribbon, spools whereon said endless ribbon runs, ribbon-vibrating devices, and means to render the vibrating devices inoperative or to cause either ribbon to be vibrated to cover and uncover the printing point at the type strokes independently of the other ribbon.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a plurality of ribbons, vibrators for the ribbons, actuating mechanism for said vibrators, and b means movable to connect any vibrator independently to said actuating mechanism and to disconnect all ol saidv vibrators from said actuating mechanism.
