In certain of my copending applications,
two ribbons of different colors are movable independently of one another to cover the pr ntfiig point at each type stroke. The ribbons are superposed -'or placed one in front of the other inf'fnont of. the platen,

The object of the present invention is to provide simple, inexpensive and easily operated means which can readily be applied to existing machines for either bringin either ribbon into use and silencing the otier one or silencing both simultaneously, at will.

Said ribbon 6 is threaded through an upstanding carrier 23 loosely connected to the front end of a lever 25, which is pivoted upon a shoulden-screw 26, the latter threaded into a bracket 27 fixed upon the rear side of a horizontal shift rail 2S.

Midway of its ends, said yoke 71 is formed with a ball portion 7 4, which is detachably inserted inan eye '75 usually provided upon the front of the lever 25, said ball forming a universal joint between the lever and the yoke to accommodate the vibratory movements of both. The forward carrier is provided with a finger piece 76, and when the latter is depressed, the carrier is forced down together with the ear 70 thereon, thus'vibrating the yoke 71, and raising the car (it) together with the carrier 40 to the position seen at Figs. 9 and 6. .When the finger piece 76 is lifted, the yoke 71 is vibrated in the opposite direction, so that the carrier 40 is silenced, and the carrier 23 brought up to work, as at Figs. 4 and The eye .75 in the lever serves as a fulcrum for the yoke 71 during the operation of shifting the carriers.
The carrier 40 may he provided with a vertical slot 77, and the carrier 23 may have a guide-pin 7 8 working in said" slot, thereby keeping the carrier 23 in vertical position. The pin? 8 further serves as a stop, since by engagement with the ends of said slot, it serves to limit the relative movements of the ribbon carriers, At Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the lever 25 is shown as vibrated up to the extreme limit -ofits movement at the type stroke; the types 2 printing through the ribbon (i, at Fig. 5, and

In a typewriting machine, the combination with means for supporting a pair of ribbons, of two ribbon vibrators, one for each ribbon, means :tor reciprocating said vibrators at the type strokes, and means for effecting relative adjustment of said vibrators relatively to the printing point to shift both vibrators to inefiective positions at the same time, or to shift eith'er vibrator to a position of disuse and cause the other 'to be brought into 'eiiective position when the type is at the printing point.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with means for supporting a pair of ribbons, of a pair of superposed vibrators, means for reciprocating them in unison at the type strokes, and means for effecting relative adjustment of said vibrators in opposite directions either to shift bothof them simultaneousl to a position of disuse, or to shift either t ereof to a position of disuse andcause the other to be brought into effective position when the type is at the 40 printing point. In a typewriting machin e,,th e,combination of a lever vibrating at the type strokes, a pair of ribbon carriers, and a link engaged by said lever midway between the ends of the link' and connecting said carriers, the link being oscillatable upon said lever to shift both carriers to positions of disuse simultaneously, or to shift either vibrator to effective position and cause the other vibrator to be brought to a different position of disuse when the type is at the printing point.

In a typewriting machine having means for sup )orting a pair of ribbons, the combination of a device reciprocating at the type-strokes, a pairof vibrators reciprocated in unison by said device, and means for effecting relative adjustment of said vibrators to shift either one to a position of disuse and cause the other to be brought into effective position when the type is at the printing point.
17. In a typewriting machine having -mcans for carrying a pair of ribbons, the
