Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed August 18, 1906. Serial No. 331,111.
To (ir/ZZ whom, it' 717,001/ concer/1,:
Be it known that we, DOMENICO CELENZA and MAX ROSEN, subjects, respectively, of the King of Italy and the Czar of Russia, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
. This invention relates to umbrellas, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which may be compactly folded together so that it can be carried in a gripsack, dress-suit case or trunk; a further object being to provide an umbrella the stick or stick portion of which is composed of telescopic parts and the ribs ofseparate parts hinged together whereby the separate parts of the stick or stick portion of the umbrella' may be telescoped, the ribs folded, the cover being also folded in this operation, and the entire device reduced to small dimensions; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an umbrella constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed inthe following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of an umbrella made according to our invention, the separate parts of which are extended for use; Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the rib portions of the umbrella folded adjacent to the stick.; Fig. 3 a detail view of the rib construction; and,'Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the separate parts of the umbrella including the stick and ribs folded together so as to reduce the dimensions in Order that the umbrella may be carried in a hand-bag, trunk or other receptacle.
The stick of our improved umbrella comprises, in the form of construction shown, .four telescopic members a, t, c and d, of which the part a constitutes the handle proper, the part the main part of the stick on which the runner-sleeve c is mounted, while the part d constitutes the tip end of the stick with which the rib-collarf is connected, the part 'c being intended primarily to strengthen the stick of the umbrella at the point where the greatest strain is thrown thereon.
The part a is provided with a spring pawl hole d2, the part b is provided with four spring pawl. holes b2, b3, b4 and b5, and the part d is provided with two spring pawl holes d2 and d3, while the part c is provided with two spring pawl holes c2 and c3, and the rinner-sleeve e with a spring pawl hole ezf The part a, is provided with a spring pawl d3, the rinner-sleeve c with a spring pawl e3 and the part d of the stick with a spring pawl d'4, and these pawls operate when the separate parts of the stick are extended as shown in ig. l, and when the separate parts of the stick are telescoped said pawls operate as shown in Fig. 4.
.The ribs g are composed of two parts q2 and g3 and the parts g2 of said ribs are connected wi th the collar f in the usual manner,
while the parts g3 of said ribs are connected with the parts g2 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. ln making this connection the part g3 is .fitted into the corresponding end. of the part g2 and said parts are connected bya pivot pin 7iwhich also forms a connection for the corresponding braces'i. Each ofthe ribs g, or the part g3 thereof, is provided with a cord j which is connected therewith at jz and with the runner-sleeve e as shown at and the object of this cord j is to hold the-parts g3 of the ribs in position for use as shown at the left of Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the cover of the umbrella, which is not shown, is secured in place on the ribs g in the usual manner, said cover being connected, in practice, with the parts g3 of the ribs ,g at k and r2, and when the stick portion of the umbrella, or the separate parts thereof, are 'telescoped as shown in Fig. 4 the parts g3 of the ribs g are folded at 7i, and in this operation the cover is also folded. and the entire device may thus be made to assume the compact form shown in Fig. 4.
The pawl d4 of the part d of the stick only operates when the parts of the umbrella are in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the operation of the pawls of and e3 at this time is also shown vin said gure, and when the parts of the umbrella are in the position shown in .this iigure the umbrella may be used as a walking stick.
IOO
It will be understood that the cords or other exible devices which are connected with the outer or hinge portion g3 of the ribs g are intended to hold said parts of said ribs in position for use without interfering with connected with the lower end portion ot the runner-sleeve e, it will be apparent that said supports ma7 be connected with other parts oi" the umbrella.
Having Vfully described our invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An umbrella the stick portion of which including the handle is composed o'lseparate telescopic sections with one of Which the ribs are connected in the usual manner, sai d telescopic sections being provided with spring pawls Which-are adapted to hold them both in the telescoped and in the extended posi tion, one of said telescopic sections of the stick and handle portion being provided With a runner-sleeve with which the braces are connected, said runner-sleeve being provided with aspring pawl which operates to hold it on one of said telescopic sections in two different positions, the ribs of the umbrella being composed of separateA parts hinged. together at the point Where the braces are connected, and the adjacent ends of the separate parts of the ribs being overlapped7 and the -outer end portions of the ribs being provided With VI'iexible supports which are connected therewith and with the runner-sleeve,
2. An umbrella the stick portion of which including the handle is composed of four telescopic sections with one of' which the ribs are connected in the usual mannerJ spring pavvls for holding said sections both in the telescoped and in the extended position, one of said telescopic sections being provided with a runner-sleeve with which the braces are, connected, the ribs of the umbrella being composed of separate parts hinged together at thepoint Where the braces are connected therewith, and the outer end portions of the ribs being provided with iexible supports which are connected therewith and with the runner-sleeve. Y A
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our invention We have signed our names in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 16th dav of August 1906.
