Description

No. 896,308. PATENTE'D'AUG. 18, 1908.
' J. J. MAGGREADY- FOLDING UMBRELLA. APPLICATION I'ILED'AUG. 14, 1907.
WI INESSES: I N VEN TOR.
I aohna'd'tacc dg I ATTORNEY.
I p I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. MACOREADY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL ROTHAMEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING UMBRELLA.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. MACOREADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding umbrellas, and particularly to that class adapted to be carried by travelers.
The objects of my improvements are, to provide an entire folding frame which, when extended, shall possess all of the charaoter. istics of an ordinary umbrella, such as strength, stiffness, light weight and convenience in manipulation, and to provide such frames capable of being readily constructed and which are but slightly more'expensive than the ordinary frames in use.
My invention consists in the novel arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully set forth and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1, represents an entire umbrella frame made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, is a partial sectional view of the telescopic handle. Fig. 8, is a sectional view of the slide runners, or sleeve. Fig. 4, is a partial plan view of the lower part of the handle. Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the slibding sleeve used at the pivotal joint of the r1 s.
In all the several views, similar characters have been used to designate similar parts.
My invention comprises the use of an ordinary handle 1, of any preferred style or shape, which is oined by an enlarged handle section 2, to the stick 3, which may be connected by any suitable means at 4, to the upper section of the stick 5, continuing entirely through the upper portion of the umbrella and terminating in a cap or point 6. Upon the upper portion of the stick 5, is secured a notch 7, to which the ribs 8 are pivoted, in the ordinary manner; these ribs may be of the usual form of construction, which is generally a thin plate or strip of steel bent in a substantially U shaped form.
Midway in the length of the ribs 8, are secured sleeves 9, with depending lugs to which are secured the outer end of the brace ribs 1 1 in the middle of these brace ribs are pivotal Specification of Letters Patent.

joints 12, uniting sections 13 to sections 11, in such manner that they may be folded parallel one to the other; the inner ends of all the rib sections 13, are pivotally connected to the runner 14, adapted to freely slide on the stick 5, which contains the catch 10, in the usual manner. In the frame ribs 8, and beyond the connection 9, are joints 15, formed similarly to the joints 12, previously described, and connecting with the outer, or
end members 16, of the umbrella frame. The pivotal joints 12 and 15, in all cases are so formed as to receive a sliding sleeve 17, which when positioned over the joints renders them perfectly rigid and unyielding; in order to hold them in place when so positioned I may form the sleeves with aportion partially cut away or detached, as at 17, forming semidetached portion acting in the manner of a spring, to prevent lateral displacement. WVith respect to the umbrella stick, I mayarrange the two sections to be connected by any suitable means as indicated at 4, in Fig. 1, or I may make the sections 8 and 5, of the stick, of tubular construction and so arranged that section 3, may slide telescopically within section .5, at such times as the umbrella is not in use when, however, it is desired to extend the same, the handle portion 3, is withdrawn to the limit of the slot-way 3, terminating with a reentrant hook formed as at 3 the runner 14, in this case, is provided with a pin 14 extending inwardly and intersecting with said slot-way, in such manner that when the handle portion 3, is drawn outwardly and given a partial turn, it becomes locked in place by reason of the pin 3" engaging with the terminations of the hooked slot-way; manifestly a reverse action disengages the stick 3, permitting it to be pushed into the upper member 5, thus it will be seen that my improved frame possesses all the attributes and characteristics of high grade umbrella frames, and that it may be readily folded or collapsed, with respect to length, so that it can be conveniently carried in a suit case, trunk or other form of baggage commonly used; it will be evident that the form of joints which I use and their connections add but little weight, and are of .an unobjectionable appearance moreover that the simplicity of my invention renders the same readily operated.
Having thus described my invention, what with a hook shaped slot in the lower stick I claim to be new and desire to secure by member thereby retaining it in an extended Letters Patentis: position.
In a folding umbrella having jointed ribs, In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 5 of sleeves havlng a catch portion ada ted to name to this specification in the presence of en age with said joints, and normal y slidtwo subscribing witnesses.
