l/VILLIAM L'IODONALD, OF CLAREMONT, MINNESOTA.
DOOR-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1 l, 1907.
Application filed May 3, 1.906. Serial No. 315,050.
To (ti/Z whom it may concern- Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hangers and more particularly to that class adapted to be used in connection with doors, gates and similar closures and my object is to provide a device of this class whereby the door, etc. may be seated within an opening or removed therefrom and disposed to one side of the opening.
A further object is to provide a suitable track-way and guides for the door and hangers.
Other objects and advantages will behereinafter made clearly apparent in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a structure having my improved hanger attached thereto, showing the door ready to be moved to one side of the openin Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of my improved hanger showing the structure in section and the door removed from the opening; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the door seated in the opening and, Fig. 5 is a detail view of the opposite hanger from that shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings and showing the door seated in the opening.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 indicates a building or structure, said structure having an opening 2 therein, and 3 indicates a door or closure for said opening, said door being so constructed that when seated in the opening 2, it will be flush with the body of the building. A track way 41, having securing brackets 5 integral therewith, is secured to the side of the structure andv at a point above the opening 2, a portion of the track way extending over said opening while the remainder of the track way is secured to the structure at one side of the opening. Secured to one edge of the door 3 are brackets 6, said. brackets having rotatably mounted therein a vertically disposed bar 7, said bar having a cranked portion 3 near its upper end.
The extreme upper portion 9 of the bar 7 extends through the bottom portion 17 of my improved hanger. Extending upwardly at right angles from the outer edge of the bottom 17 and formed integral therewith is an outer side plate 10, the upper end of said plate being bent inwardly at right angles to the side plate 10 a distance equal to the width of the bottom portion 17, and then downwardly at right angles, as shown at 18, the outer and inner sides thus formed having journaled therebetwecn a pair of sheaves 11 which are designed to travel along the trackway 4. Extending upwardly at right angles from the inner edge of the bottom 17 is a side plate 19, at the upper end of which I provide an outwardly extending bead or ledge 20,-the outer edge of which is adjacent the inner face of the lower edge of the trackway 1. It will be understood that the ends of the inner side portions 18 and 19 are separated sufficiently to allow the free passage therebetween of the track-supporting brackets 5.
A partition 21 parallel with the bottom portion 17 of the hanger connects the inner side 19 with the outer side 10 of the hanger and lends strength and rigidity to the frame. The upper portion 9 of the bar 7 extends, through the center of the bottom portion 17 and also through the partition 21, adjacent the lower edge of the trackway l, thus preventing the hanger from moving upwardly and allowing the sheaves to leave said trackway. Collars 22 are pinned or otherwise secured to the bar 9 above and below the partition 21 which prevent longitudinal movement of the hanger on said bar but allow said bar to freely rotate in the bearings formed by said bottom 17 and partition 21. It will be seenthat the hanger herein described is substantially G-shaped and so constructed as to be held in vertical alinement with the bar 9 at all times.
Secured to the opposite edge of the door 3 is a hanger 12, said hanger being secured directly to the door in any preferred manner and it is provided at its upper end with a sheave 13, said sheave being also designed to travel upon the track-way l. That edge of the door having the hanger 12 secured there to is directed into the opening 2 by disposing that portion of the track-way immediately lever 14 is moved in the opposite direction until that edge of the door carrying the bar 7 is forced out of the opening 2 when the door is moved bodily along the track-way 4 and disposed to one side of the opening. The lower end of the door 3 is prevented from swinging while being closed through the medium of a suitable roller 15 mounted upon a bracket 16 and the lower end. of that edge of the door carrying the hanger 12 is directed into the opening 2 by means of a guide 17.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a cardoor and a trackway above said door; of a hanger comprising a frame, a pair of sheaves mounted in the upper end of said hanger frame, an outwardly directed ledge at the upper end of the inner side section of said frame, a partition connecting the sides of said hanger frame, a bar rotatably journaled in the partition and bottom portion of the hanger frame, and collars secured to said bar above and below the partition whereby longitudinal movement of the hanger on the bar will be prevented.
2. The combination with a sliding door, and a trackway above said-door; of a door hanger comprising a frame substantially G- shaped, sheaves rotatably mounted in the upper end of said frame, a partition above and parallel with the bottom of the frame and connecting the lower portion of the side sections of said frame, a bar centrally disposed through the partition and the bottom of the hanger frame, collars secured to the bar above and below the partition, and an outwardly directed ledge on the inner side section of the frame.
3. The combination with a car door and a trackway above said door; of a hanger comprising a frame, a pair of sheaves mounted in the upper end of said frame, an outwardly directed ledge at the upper end of the inner side section of said frame, a partition connecting the sides of said frame, a bar journaled in the partition and bottom portion of the hanger frame, and collars mounted on said bar on each side of the partition, said hanger being substantially G-shaped.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM MCDONALD.
