Description

J. M. JONES.
GUARD FOR PLANERS 0R JOINTERS. APPLIOATI'ON FILED I'BB.26,1908.
PATENTED JUNE 11, 1907.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUARD FOR PLANERS OR JOINTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed February 26,1906. Serial NO- 302,977.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMEs MELVIN JONES, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the town of Dundas, in the county of Went- Worth,.in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Guards for Buzz Planers or Jointers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same.
My invention relates to a safety device to be employed in connection with machines such as buzz planers or jointers &c., having revolving knives or saws, which are very dangerous to the operators, many having had fingers, hands and arms out off in operating them, as the hands are so often near the knives in the operation of planing or dressing lumber, and my device is for the purpose of preventing such accidents to the operators by an effectual guard, so constructed as to be placed instantly in position when required and out of the way when not necessary to be employed. I
My invention consists in a main metal plate about six inches square, more or less, and about half an inch thick into which is telescoped a series of metal plates which when all pulled out horizontally will measure about nineteen inches more or less. A round supporting rod is bolted to the main plate, and let into a bracket having a'corresponding opening in it, which is secured to the main frame of the planer or jointer in close proximity to the knives, a thumb screw is made to pass through the bracket and impinge on the rod or standard to hold it in any position desired, lateral or vertical.
1 attain the object sought for by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1, is a front edge view of my safety guard. Fig. 2, is a plan view showing all the telescopic plates drawn out to their extreme limit.
In the drawing 1 represents the first or main plate to which is bolted by bolts f, f, the round standard rod A, which is made to pass through a bracket B, bolted to the frame C, of a buzz planer or jointer or kindred machines by bolts (Z, (Z, the main plate 1 being held at any desired height by the thumb screw 6, in the bracket B.
The main plate 1 is formed with a dovetail recess to admit a smaller plate 2, which is formed to fit in the corresponding recess in the plate 1, and plate 2, is formed similarly to admit plate 3 which is a little smaller than plate 2, while plate 3 admits plate, 4. which is still smaller; and the said plates 1, 2, 3 and 4, all telescope together, so that when closed they are all inside of plate 1, and when drawn out appear as in Fig. 2.
Means are employed to prevent the plates from coming apart when drawn out, by a series of stop pins, as follows,-the pin 9, in plate 1, a slot h, in plate 2, a pin i, in plate 3,
at one end and a pin 7', at the opposite end of plate 3, and a slot 7c, in plate 4, the latter also being provided with a push or pull pin Z, with a broad head, for convenience in pulling out the plates or telescoping them. The plates 1, 2, 3 and 4, each have a notch m, to receive the said pull pin Z, when the said plates are closed one within the other.
It will be observed that the dovetail plates as shown may be formed in any manner desired for economy, either cast, malleable, or stamped to allow them to slide one within the other.
The practical operation of the device may be described as follows, the bracket B, be ing secured to the frame of a planer or jointer or kindred machine in proximity to the knives or cutters &c., the rod or standard A, is inserted in the bracket B, and the height of the plates determined and aflixed by the thumb screw 6, the plates 2, 3, and 1, are drawn out from plate 1, and swung over the knives or cutters of the machine when they will act as a guard to prevent the hands of the operator from the liability of accident from the knives during the operation of the machine. When not in use the thumb screw is loosened and the guard swung out of the way.
Having thus described my device and its advantages, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
A protecting guard for buzz planers or jointers comprising a vertical adjustable red, the top bent horizontally, a plate attached to the top of the rod and constructed with dovetail grooves, a second similarly constructed plate made to slide in said dovetail grooves tached to the outer end of the fourth plate, 10 of the first plate, a third plate with dovetail" all arranged substantially as and for the purgrooves made to slide in the second plate, pose specified.
and a fourth plate similarly constructed Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the 18th day made to slide in the third plate, a slot in the of January, 1906; I 7 second plate, and in the fourth plate, and JAJVIES MELVIN JONES.
pins in the slots to prevent them from coming Signedin the presence of apart, and the first, second and third plates W. R. CROOKETT,
formed with notches to receive a pull pin at- RICHARD BUTLER.
