Be it known that I, JAMES D. MoMIoHAnL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improve ments in Pressure-Guards for \Voodworlc ing-Machines, of which the following is specification.
My invention relates to pressure guards for woodworking machines, such as shapers, and has for its purpose to afford a construction that lends itself readily to the several necessary adjustments, and enables the operator to position and manipulate the guard in the least possible time, and with great ease.
A further object of the invention is to provide a practical arrangement that can be economically manufactured, and in which there is facility for protecting a plurality of cutting members from a common point on a work table. I
The invention also possesses other advantages, and improvements, all of which will be clear from the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the features of novelty being pointed out in the claims following the specification.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates the work table, and B are the cutting members, two of which are shown in the present disclosure. It is highly desirable to provide a guard mechanism which can be attached at one part of the table, and cotiperate with both cutting members. i
To this end, my improvement consists of a base 0 with integral sockets 0. Within each of the sockets c is arranged a guard unit, adapted to be independently adjusted at any angle with reference to the base C and as the guard units are duplicates in all respects, it will be sufficient to describe but one in detail.
Each guard unit comprises a vertically arranged supporting standard, the lower end of which is of circular cross section at (4, whereby it engages the socket c and rotates therein for adjustment. The circular lowerportion of the standard is provided with an annular groove or recess 7), to receive a securing screw (Z which is threaded in the base and engages the supporting standard so as to maintain the guard unit in angular position of adjustment.
The portion of the supporting standard above the circular part a, is of angular crosssection and preferably rectangular, as indicated by e. Slidably arranged thereon is a carrier 7 which is vertically adjustable on the angular portion 6 of the standard.
In order to adjust the carrier f vertically, it is provided with a vertically disposed threaded opening which receives threaded operating rod 9. The upper end of the rod g is journaled in a plate 72,, secured to the upper end of the supporting standard, and is provided with operating means preferably in the form of a crank z'. The carrier is held in any desired position of vertical adjustment by a set screw j which is threaded in an opening in the carrier and engages the supporting standard.
The carrier 7" has arranged thereon an arm D which is adjustable horizontally on the carrier. To this end, the carrier is slotted as indicated by is, and the arm D is preferably in the form of a thin metallic plate which passes through the slot 70, and is held in any position of horizontal adjustment by the set screw Z.
The arm D has mounted thereon the guard member, which preferably comprises a plurality of sections that surround the cutting member when in normal position, one of said sections having movement relatively to the other, so as to afford, when moved, an unobstructed space at one side of the cuttin D member for access thereto.
This is accomplished by providing a stationary section E, which is fixedly mounted on the arm D, and a movable section F that is pivoted on the stationary section at m. The movable section F is adapted to swing about the pivot m with reference to the stationary section E, its two positions being shown in Fig. 3, and when the movable section is in its outer position, the cutting member is readily accessible between the separated ends of the sections. The sections are held in normal position by yieldable retaining means, for which purpose a spring actuated locking pin a is provided.
The pin a is slidably mounted in a housing 0 on the movable section F and is actuated by a spring P. The lower end of the pin, a engages a recess Q in the stationary section E. A fin er piece R is provided at the upper end 0 the locking pin a for lifting it, in order to release the movable section. The stationary section is also provided at its end with an inclined guideway S which initially receives the locking pin a and causes it to readily enter the recess Q. The movable section is provided on its under side with a wooden block Gr which engages the upper surface of the work while the latter is moved against the side of the cutting'tool B, as
' usual in this class of devices.
In the operation of the guard, the base 0 is rigidly attached to the Work table at a suitable point, between a pair of cutting members. Each guard member is then ad justed to the properangle with reference to the base in order to accommodate its cutting member, by loosening the securing screw (Z and turningthe supporting standard in the base socket 0 until the proper angle is reached, whereupon the securing screw (1 is tightened to hold thestandard in adjusted position. The set screw 7 is loosened topermit the carrier f to be adjusted vertically to any position desired by turning the crank z', and the set screw j is again tightened. Upon loosening the set screw Z, the arm D can be adjusted horizontally to the proper position, and the set screw Z is again tightened and the guard is ready for operation.
It will be understood that the construction shown may be modified as to its details, without departing from the essential feature of my invention, as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a pressure guard, a guard member comprising a plurality of sections adapted when in normal position to surround a cutting member, one of the sections being pivoted and adapted to swing on the other, and
yieldable means acting toretain the sections in normal relation.
2. In a pressure guard, aguard member comprising a plurality of sections adapted when in'normal position to surround a cutting member, one of the sections being pivoted and adapted to swing on the other, and a springactuated locking pin on one section, the other section having a recess to receive said pin.
