Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARNO BUFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved screen which may be employed either as a closure for show-cases, or as a covering for shelves or the like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a screen of this character which will effectively exclude all flies or other insects, but which is so designed as to enable ready access to be had either to the show-case or shelf. To this end, the screen comprises two overlapping flaps provided with elastic bands by means of which they are normally held in a closed position.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved screen; Fi 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 is a detail view of the fastening members employed in connection with the elastic bands.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The screen comprising the present invention is composed of two corresponding sections, each of which is in the nature of a flap 1 and is formed of some flexible material, preferably mosquito netting. Each of the flaps 1 is secured along one of its longitudinal edges to a bar 2 -which is provided with openings 3 designed to receive the screws or other fastenings members 4 by means of which they are secured in position either upon the top or bottom of the showcase, or upon the edges of the shelves.

In the form of the invention shown in the drawings, the bars 2 are formed of wood and the flaps 1 are fastened thereto by means of the tacks 5. The overlapping edges of the flaps 1 are curved inwardly at an intermediate point, as indicated at 6 and are provided with the elastic bands 7, tension in which tends to pull the inwardly curved portions of the flaps outwardly and to hold the said flaps in a stretched position. Hook members 8 are located at the opposite extremities of the elastic bands 7 and are designed to detachably engage either the end portions of the show-case, or shelf partitions. In the present instance, the shanks of the hook members 8 are formed with the buckles 9 by means of which they are detachably and adjustably connected to the said elastic bands.

When the screen is in normal position, the tension in the elastic bands 7 tends to hold the flaps in the stretched condition and also holds the hook members 8 in a firm engagement with the ends of the show case or the shelf partitions. When it is desired to obtain access to the shelf, it is simply necessary to pull the intermediate portions of the flaps 1 apart in order to form a central opening through which the hand can be thrust. Up on the withdrawal of the hand, the elastic action of the bands 7 will automatically close the flaps and thereby exclude all flies or other insects which might otherwise have obtained access to the shelf through the carelessness of the operator in neglecting nary screen or sliding door.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a pair of flaps the inner edges of which overlap and are curved inwardly, elastic bands extending along the overlapping edges of the flaps, and means carried by the flaps for securing the same in position.

2. A device of the character described comprising a pair of flaps the inner edges of which overlap and are curved inwardly, elastic bands extending along the overlapping edges of the flaps, and fastening members carried by the extremities of the elastic bands.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of flaps, the inner edges of which overlap and are curved inwardly at an intermediate point, bars extending along the outer edges of the flaps, elastic bands extending along the inner edges of the flaps, and hook members detachably and adjustably connected to the extremities of the elastic bands.
