DOOR HANGER.
APPLIOATION FILED SEPT, 24, 1905.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
To all whom it may concern.-
,combination with what I term a UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY C. SMIT] I, OF C1IICAGO,' ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ALLITH MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Beit known that I, HENRY C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, ol' which the following is as ecification'.`
This invention re ates to door hangers, and pertains more especially to novel means for suspending the door below the up er edge of the opening to be guarded there y, and to means for closing the space between the top of the door and the upper edge of the. opening opposite the hanger mechanism in order to afford a complete and effective closure for the opening and prevent the'passage of drafts and moisture, as well as, in fire-proofstruc tures, to afford a safeguard against the spread 3f fire through the opening guarded by the oor.
In the principal intended application of the invention, and in the most complete form 4of the latter, the structure comprises a pair of tracks supported upon two series of oppositelyprojectingtrack-supportingbrackets themselves' suspended .from the upper edge of the door opening, each track supporting one or more doors capable of sliding in either direction, the combined doors of the two tracks together be capable of affording a complete closure or theopening, in parting strip lying between and preferably secured to the two series of brackets, and closing the `space between the tops of the doors an the upper margin of the opening.
My invention, in an approved mechanical form, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a mechanism embodying my present improvements; and Fig. 2 is an edge view, partly in crosssection.
Referring to the drawings, 5 may designate a portion of the wall of a warehouse or other structure lying immediately above an opening of considerable extent therein, the lower margin of the wall coinciding with the upper margin of the opening being indicated at 5a (Fig. 2). Bolted or otherwise secured. to the edge of wall 5 directly above the opening are a pair of angle irons 6. and 69, the op osltelyA proJecting horizontal portions,v of W 'ch liek substantially in the horizontal plane -of the Specification of Letters' Patent.y Application filed September 24, 1906. Serial No. 385.904.
parting strip firm y between said or doors on t e other side, so
noon-HANGER.
Patented my as, 1907;
Secured to the horizontal members ofthe angle irons, as bybolts7 and 7B' are a pair of depending brackets 8 and 8a' provided at their lower ends with oppositel `extending arms 9 and'9 that support trac s 10 and 10, On these tracks are `,mounted hangers 11 and 11a servingto suspend doors 12 and 12a beneaththe tracks 10 and 10, res ectively. l
he described manner of hanging the doors leaves an open space between the upperedges of the doors and theupper mar of lower edge of the wall, as clearly shownlin Fig. 2.
the door opening, which space it is deslrable for a variety of reasons to close. This .is doneA by means of a strip -13 that is interposed beall as clearly shown in Fig. v2. l This member,
which Iterm a parting strip Where a pair of tracks supporting two doors or series of doors slidable past each other are employed,
is preferably supported by means of bolts 14 passed through each pair of op osed brackets and the partin strip, thus c amping said rackets,
and contributing to the stren th and rigidity of the track sup orts themsves, as well as affording an -efiiisient guard or closure for that portion of the opening lying above the tops of the doors.- i With this construction.v an opening of any width may bel controlled by two doors or two series of. doors suspendedon the two tracks, respectively; the door 'or doors on one side bein capable of sliding into registering or over applng ositions relatively to the door as to obtain any desired width of opening, as well as to completely close the opening by sliding the doors into marginally overlapping positions, as indicated in Fig. 2. The parting strip 13 eX- tends continuously above all the doors from side to side of the opening.
Minor variations and modifications in the details of structure land arrangement may be made by those skilled in the art without affecting the substance or sacrificing the advantages of the present invention.
I claim:
l Y 1. In a door hanger, the combination with IOO IOS
7 O tweenthe two series of brackets 8 and 8a', the
a bracket suspended from the upper margin of the door opening, a track supported thereby, a hanger vmounted to travel on said track, and a door suspeinled by said hanger7 of a strip secured to said bracket and closing the space between the upper edge of the openingr and the top of thel door, substantially as described.
In a door hanger, the combination with a bracket suspended from the upper margin of the door opening, a track supported thereby, a hanger mounted to travel on said track7 and a door suspended by said hanger7 of a strip secured te said bracket with its upper edge engaging' the upper margin of the door opening and its lower edge overlapping the upper end ef the door, substantially as de scribed. Y
3. In a door hanger, the combination with a pair of oppositely extending brackets suspended from the upper marginof ythe door opening, ef tracks carried by said brackets',
hangers mounted'on said tracks, doors suspended by said hangers7 and a parting strip interposed between said brackets and closing the lspace between the upper edge of the openingr and the tops of the doors, substantially as described.
4. ln a door hangerI the combination with a pair of oppositely extending brackets suspended from the upper margin of the door opening, of tracks carried by said brackets, hangers mounted on said tracks, doers suspended by said hangers, and a parting strip secured to and between said brackets with its upper edge engaging the upper margin of the door opening and its lower edge extending below and between the upper margins of the doors, substantially as described.
HENRY C. SMITH.
