Description

D. M ACKAY, OF WHITESTONE, NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No. 85,460, dated December 29, 1868.
IMPROVED EGG-BEATER.
The Schedule referred to :lu these Letters Patent and making part of vthe me' 4 I l y To allwhom it ma/y concern g Be it known that I, D. D. MACKAY, of Whitestone, in
the county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Muddlers and Egg-Beaters; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a muddler or eggbeater constructed according to my improvement, and Figure 2, a vertica'l section of the same. i Similar letters of reference'indicate corresponding parts in both iigures.
This invention consists in a novel arrangement of devices within the handle of a toddy-muddler or eggbeater, whereby, when the handle is held inthe hand, with the bottom of the inuddler or beater in a tumbler or other vessel, theshaft or. stem of the muddler, and
'the attached stirrers or'beating-wings,mayhave an alternate rotaryv motion imparted to them, by alternately pressing down and raising the handle.
In order that others may be better enabled to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it, with reference to the draw- 1n rs.
A is the handle, with an opening through its entire length, and closed at its extremities by caps, j' and h.
Below and near the central portion of the handle, and within this opening or cavity, is secured a nut, a, between which and the upper cap, f, is inserted a spiral spring, O, carrying at its lower extremity a concave bearing, e.
D is a rotary vertical shaft or stem, working through an opening, b, in the lower cap, h, and which has its upper portion, B, iiattened and twisted, or otherwise rendered spiral or threaded, said, spiral or threaded portion being of somewhat greater diametral `proportionsthan the cylindrical portion of the shaft or stem D, so as to form a stop, g, for preventing its passage through the opening b of the lower cap, h, Vand is fitted so as to work in and through the nut a, and against the concave bearing e of the spiral spring C, its upper extremity being pointed for that purpose.
At or near the lower extremity of the shaft or stem D are attached stirrers or beating-wings, ai, for mixing or beating the substance to which it is applied.
Inoperating this invention, the lowerpart of tl.I stem, carrying the beating-wings d, is placed into a tumbler or other vessel containing the substance to be mixed, and the handle Amoved downward by depression of the hand, which causes the' stem or shaft, acting upon its rounded or pivoted extremity, as a pivot against the bottom of the tomber or vessel, to rotate, be means of the nut a, passing over the spiral or threaded portion B of the stemD, which movement `exerts a tension upon the spiral spring C, by the action of' the pointed extremity of the spiral B under and against the concave bearing e on the lower extremity of said spring. Upon the said tension being relieved by a relaxation of the hand, the spring C forces up the handle A, causing the stem to rotate in the opposite direction,
Whatv I claim as my invention, and desire 'to have secured by LettersPatent, is-
The combination of the spiral thread or screw B on the shaft or stem D, the nut a, the upper spindle-bearing e, the spring C, and the stop g, all arranged within the h andle A, substantially as herein speciied.
D. D. MACKAY. Witnesses:
HENRI T. BROWN, HENRY PALMER.
