PATENT OFFICE.
ELIZA O. BABCOCK, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
LAMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
Application filed May 29, 1906. Serial No. 319,404.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZA C. BABCOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bing hamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chimney supports for lamp burners of the type embodying a plurality of vertical chimney engaging arms, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which in practice will firmly and securely hold the chimney, one in which the chimney may be readily seated in position on the arms, and one wherein the arms will securely clamp the chimney for properly holding the latter in position on the burner and at the same time admit of convenient removal of the chimney.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a chimney showing the same mounted on a burner equipped with supporting arms embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in section, showing the connection between the lower end of one of the arms-and the burner base. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the supporting arms are formed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a burner cap or bell having a marginal, outstanding lower edge flange 1 seated at its lower end on the upper face of a horizontal base portion or table 2 on which rests the lower end of a chimney 3 of ordinary form,
presenting a cylindrical, tubular lower por-- tion or throat 4 and provided at the upper end of the latter with an outwardly flaring portion or shoulder 5, the inner face of which is curved as shown, there being formed on the table 2 an integral, depending tubular neck 5 designed to screw into the mouth of the lamp font, not shown, for fixing the burner in place thereon. These parts may all be of the usual or any appropriate form Attached to the base 2 is a plurality of spring metal vertically uprising chimney supporting-arms or members 6 disposed at diametrically opposite points, as shown, and terminating at their upper ends in engaging portions or heads 7 each presenting an'outturned portion 8 curved to fit the inner curved face 5 of the chimney and an inwardly and upwardly inclined finger 9 over which the chimney rides during its application to the burner. The arms 6 are formed integrally with an annular body portion or ring 10 adapted to fit beneath the base portion 2 of the burner which is provided with openings 11 upwardly through which the arms are extended above the base, the arms being after the ring 10 is properly seated beneath the base folded at their lower ends as at 12 onto the base for securely clamping the base ring thereto with the folded portions of the arms engaging the flange 1 for holding the cap in position on the table.
In practice, when the chimney is seated in place on the lamp burner the arms 6'project upward through the tubular lower portion 4 and the curved faces 8 of the engaging heads bear on the inner curved face 5 of the chimney to securely clamp the latter in place. In the operation of applying the chimney to the burner the lower edge of the chimney rides over the inclined fingers 9 to thus swing the heads inward and insure free passage of the arms upward into the chimney, it being noted that under this arrangement provision is made for the chimney being conveniently. seated in place on the burner and securely retained in place thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a lamp 'burner having a horizontal table provided with a plurality of openings and with a depending tubular neck, of a cap seated on the upper face of the table and provided with an outstanding marginal lower edge flange, a base ring formed to fit around the neck and lie flush against the lower face of said table, and a plurality of chimney engaging arms made ining engaged with the outstanding flange for tegral with the ring and extended Vertically retaining the cap in place on the table. upward through the respective openings in In testimony whereof, I a'll'ix my signature the table, the arms being folded adjacent in presence of two witnesses.
5 their lower ends downward upon and into ELIZA C. BABCOCK.
engagement with the upper face of the table Witnesses: for holding the ring securely in place there- MAY BENEDICT, beneath, the folded portions of the fLIlIlSbG- E. C. BENEDICT.
