My invention relates to a typewriting attachn'ient for adding machines and more particularly to that class of attachment illustrated in the patent to Edwin B. Cram, No. 7 61,948 of June 7, 1904, in which the platen of the adding machine co-operates when in one position with. the adding machine and when in another position with the typewriting machine.
In. the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of attaclnnent made in accord ance with. my invention, Figure l is a side elevation illustrating; my invention together with the adding machine to which the same is attached. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the frame for supporting the typewriter and add ing machine. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the frame shown in Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged sectional views showing details of construction. Fig. 6 is a detailed view of one of the parts shown. in Fig. 5. Figs. 7 and 8 are enlarged. views partly in section, showing details of construction of the typewriting m achine.

I 10 represents the base of the frame. On this base rests the adding machine 11. Set screws 12 are provided which bear upon the feet of the adding machine 11 so that the said adding machine may be moved either towardv the front or the rear, as will be hereinafter more fully described. 13 is the platen of the adding machine which co-operates with the adding machine when in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and with the typewriting machine when in the positien shown in. full lines. The base 10 is provided with bosses 14 serving as feet. These bosses 14L are preferably three in number, two being placed at the rear end of the base port.
and one at the front. Projecting upwardly at the rear end of the base 10 are side frames 15 carrying cross rails 16 and 17 upon which the typewriting machine runs. The rod or rail 16 is mounted in blocks 18 by means of screws 19. Each of the blocks 18 is provided with a downwardly projecting lug 20 entering and opening in the top of the side frame 1.5. This lug 20 is engaged by means of a screw 21 so that the block 18 can be moved toward or away from the adding machine 11 by turning the screw 21. In this manner either end of the rod 16 can be adjusted toward and away from the adding machine. The blocks 18 also carry the feed rack 22 by means of which the typewriting machine is fed longitudinally upon its sup The typewriting machine is provided with a frame 23, the rear end of which engages with the rod or rail 16 while the front runs upon the rail 17. This rail 17 is engaged at each end by means of a screw 24 provided with a nut 25. By turning the nut 25 the screw 24 will raise and lower the end of the rail 17. A set screw 26 is used to secure the rail firmly in position after being properly adjusted. By means of the two set screws 24 the two ends of the rail 17 can be vertically adjusted independently, thus securing the proper vertical adjustment of the typewriting machine.
28 are the usual key bars which are con nected with the type bars 29. These type bars 29 are pivoted in a segment 30 by means of a rod 31. This segment 30 forms part of the type basket 32 and is suspended by means of a link 33 from a cross piece 34 secured between the two side frames 23. In this cross piece 34 are pivoted, by means of a curved rod 35, a set of intermediate levers 36 form-' ing part of the connection between the key bars 28 and the type bars 29.
38 is the inking ribbon which is interposed between the type bars 29 and the platen 13.
39 is a tension device carried by the frame 15 and attached to the typewriting machine 23 so as to draw the machine toward the right hand end of the frame under the action of the feed mechanism.
40 is a bell secured to a bar 41 carried on the rack bar 22. This bell 40 is adapted to be actuated by the adding machine 23 when it reaches a predetermined point in its travel.
In addition to the means for vertically adjusting the typewriting machine hereinbefore described it is desirable to have means for vertically adjusting the adding machine and to be able to independently adjust the four corners of the machine vertically. To accomplish this result I provide four threaded plugs or cylinders .t2 which are arranged in the base 10, as best shown in Fig. 2, so that the feet of the adding machine 11 will rest on the heads of said plugs or cylinders. Each of these plugs or cylinders 42 are provided in its upper face with a slot 43 by means of which the cylinders may be rotated to raise and lowerit and thus vertically adjust the machine 11. In order to hold the cylinders 42 in proper position when they are adjusted I provide set screws *4 adapted to bear against the sides of the cylinders 42.
The main advantage of my attachment is the ease with which the same may be properly adjusted to co-operate with the roll 13. The adding machine 11 may be moved either toward or away from the typewriting machine by means of the set screws 12, and at the same time the typewriting machine can be moved toward or away from the adding machine by means of the screws 21. Moreover, in this last adjustment the two ends of the cross rail can be adjusted independently so as to bring the typewriting machine into perfect alinement with the axis of the rail or platen 13. Moreover, the screws 24 can be turned bymeans of the nuts 25 so as to inde pendently adjust the two ends of the cross rail 17 in a vertical direction, thus securing vertical alinement of the typewriting machine with the roll 13.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The combination with a typewriting machine, of an adding machine, said adding machine being provided with printing mechanism independent of said typewriting ma chine, a platen common to the printing mechanism of said adding machine and said typewriting machine, a frame supporting both said adding machine and typewriting machine, and means carried by said frame for adjusting one of said machines toward and away from the other.
2. The combination with a typewriting machine, of an adding machine, said adding machine being provided with printing mechanism independent of said typewriting machine, a platen common to the printing mechanism of said adding machine and said typewriting machine, a frame supporting both said adding machine and typewritii'ig machine, and means carried by said frame for adjusting said adding machine toward and away from said typewriting machine.
3. The combination with a typewriting machine, of an adding machine, said adding machine being provided with printing mecle anism independent of said typewritiing machine, a platen common to the printing mechanism of said adding machine and said typewriting machine, a frame supporting both said adding machine and typewriting machine, and a set of screws carried by said frame for adjusting said adding machine toward and away irom said typewriting machine.

The combination with a typewriting machine, of an adding machine, said adding machine being provided with printing mechanism independent of said typewriting machine, a platen common to the printing mechanism of said adding machine and said typewriting machine, a frame supporting said adding machine, a pair of rails carried by said base, a typewriting machine supported upon said rails, and means for adjusting one of said rails toward and away from said adding machine.
The combination with an adding machine, of a base secured to said adding machine, a pair of rails carried by said base. a typewriting machine supported on said rails, and means for independently adjusting the. two ends of one of said rails toward and away from said adding machine.
6. The combination with an adding machine, of a base secured to said adding machine, a pair of rails carried by said base, a typewriting machine supported on said tails and means for vta'tically adjusting one oi said rails.
7. The combination with an adding machine, of a base secured to said adding machine, a pair of rails carried by said base, a typcwriting machine supported on said rails, and means for independently adjusting the two ends of one of said rails vertically.
S. The combination with an adding machine, of a base secured to said adding machine, a pair oi rails carried by said base, a typewriting machine supported on said rails, means for adjusting one of said rails toward and away from said adding machine, and means for adjusting the other of said rails vertically.
9. The combination with an adding machine, of a base secured to said adding malIO chine, a platen common to the printing mechanism of said adding machine and said type- Writing machine, a frame supporting both said adding machine and typewriting machine, and a plurality of threaded members carried in said base for vertically adjusting said adding machine.
