My invention relates to guiding devices' for use in typewriting machines, and the primary object of the invention is to provide new and improved guiding and controlling devices which are especially adapted. for employment with what is known as the center-tie element of the No. 6 Remington-Noiseless typewriting machine, although it is to be understood that the principles oi the invention may be availed of in connection with other parts and in other styles of typewriting machines. n v
To the above and other ends whichvvill hereinafter appear, my invention rconsists in the features of construction, combinations of devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
rlhe present construction was designed particularly for the purpose ot holding the center-tieoit the Remington-Noiseless machine so securely as to prevent itA from being aected by the shocks and jars incident to the operation of the machine, while at the same time guiding the center tie with accuracy and nicety in its fore-and-aft adjustments, which,` as is well understood are 'for he purpose ot varying the manifolding capacity of the machine. As heretofore constructed, the center-tie was controlled and guided in its ore-and-aft movements and positions by seats cut or milled on the stationary parts, the main seat being in the cross bar at the rear lower portion of the machine, and theforward or upper seat be ing in the type bar support. lThis construction required that the two seats should be 'in exact register in order to insure proper positioning and guiding oi' the center-tie element, and such exact registration was diii'icult to obtain in practice. By my present invention the forward seat is dispensed with, only the main or lower seat being retained, but its construction being altered. In addition to this lower seat or guiding device, another device for guiding and stabilizing the center tie is provided, said other device comprising retain-ers or arms which are adjustably secured to and project laterally from the sides of the center-tie above its seat. These arms are provided with round holes or eyes and slidably engage pins or studs projecting forward from rrectangular brackets which are adjust-ably secured to the frame or a stationary part of the machine. The arms or eye-parts and the brackets or stud-carrying parts are arranged in pairs, all or' these parts being adjustable independently or' each other so that the stud and eyeguiding devices may readily be brought into register, so to speak, with the main guide or seat at the under side of the center-tie element. and-att adjustments or" the centeretie to be edected without the obstruction or friction due to faulty registration of the seats or guides, while at the same time providing a support for the center-tie additional to the lower guide seat and some distance above the same and to the rear thereof, this location being highly advantageous for stabilizing purposes. As appears from Figs. l and 5, lthe main frame of the No. t Remington-Noiseless typevvriting machine comprises side plates l which are connected at the front by a U- shaped portion (not shown herein) which serves to enclose the keyboard. At the rear the side plates are connected by a rear plate The construction permits fore- 2 which is secured at its ends by headed screws 3 to the rear vertical faces of the side plates 1. Screwed down on the upper faces of the side plates isa top plate which is fiagmentarily shown in Fig. 1 and numbered 4. The frame of the machine further comprises a cross bar 5 which is disposed at the rear portion of the main frame between the side plates 1 to which the ends of the cross bar are suitably secured. Supported at the middle portion of the cross bar 5 is a type action segment 6 which provides one of the supports for the type actions of the machine. The segment 6 is horizontally disposed and is provided with two rearwardly extending arms 7 which receive headed screws 3 that are threaded downward into the cross bar 5 and secure the segment 6 fixedly thereto, assisted by dowel pins 9. As is plainly shown in Fig. 1 the segment 6 is in a plane above that of its supporting arms. The rear under face 10 of the segmentis finished t provide a uiding or contact surface.
Vbupported on the main frame is a movable member or casting commonly called a center-tie and which, as a whole, is designated by the reference numeral 11. The member or center-tie comprises a cross bar or body portion 12 extending laterally outward to the sides of the machine and an upward extension 13 at the central rear portion of the body 12, this extension having side flanges or ribs and a cross web and being substantially U-shapedin cross section. lhe manner of supporting and guiding the center-tie on the main frame with which my invention is more particularly concerned will be described later. Projecting upward from the cross bar or body 12 are lugs 14 which provide bearings for a rock shaft or balancing shaft 15 near the ends of which are secured a pair of two-part carriage balancing levers 16. The forward arms of these levers are connected through trains of devices with the shift keys of the machine as fully disclosed in my Aprior application, Si'. No. 14,100, filed March 9, 1925. rlhe rear arms of the levers 16 are pivotally connected at 17 with a carriage supporting` trackway or rail comprised of two rigidly connected parts 18 and 19, forming a trough-like bar which is provided with oppositely disposed grooves receiving antifriction rollers 20, said rollers also cooperating with oppositely disposed grooves in a carriage cross-bar 21. Besides the cross bar 21 the carriage comprises end bars 22 fixed to and rising from the cross bar at its ends. Mounted on the carriage is a rotary platen 23 Vwith the front face of which cooperate the printing instrumentalities or type bars. rlhe platen 23 and one of the type bars 2d are diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1. lt i. ill be understood that when one of the shift keys is depressed, it will actuate the levers 16, causing their rear arms to swing UPWd raising the mil 185 19 the.
carriage 21, 22, and the platen 23, the latter being thereby shifted to a new case position. This case shifting operation of the plate-n does not affect the member or center-tie 11 which remains quiescent during such operation. The ca 1riage is connected with guiding devices which are controlled by a trackway formed in the center-tie extension 13, these guiding devices assisting to stabilize the carriage during its case shifting and other movements as explained in my prior application aforesaid.
The center-tie is adapted to be set variably in different positions in a fore-and-aft direction on the main frame in order to vary the vertical plane in which the printing face of the platen lies, so as'to afford variation of the pressure with which the types co-operate with the printing face, thereby controlling the manifoldng power of the machine, as is well understood. As heretofore stated, in the prior construction, the mounting of the center-tie was open to certain objections and it was for the purpose of overcoming these objections and otherwise improving the mounting and guiding of the center-tie in its fereand-aft movements that my present invention was more particularly designed. To this end the middle portion of the bar 12 is provided with downward ribs or eXtensions ll1l which are. virtually continuations of the flanges of the part 13. The ribs 11a are .linisl ed at their under sides to provide guiding surfaces 25 andV 26, these surfaces coiitactively engaging with machined or finished surfaces 27 formed on the bar 12 between the two arms 7, as best appears in Figs. 1 and 2. 1t will be seen that the arms 7 co-operate with the top of the cioss bar 12 to form a seat or depression in which the downward extensions 11'nl are seated or engaged. The outer faces of the downward extensions and the inner faces of the arms 7 are machined or finished and co-Operate to prevent undue. lateral movement or yield ofthe lower portion of the center-tie, as will be clearlyv understood from Fig. 2. The under face of the segment 6 is provided between the arms 7 with a slight downward extension 2S, the bottom face of which is finished or machined to provide a contact surface or stop with which contacts or engages the. upper face of an extension or cross bar 11b connecting the extensions or flanges lun lli)
11", the upper face of the cross bar 11b being likewise machined or finished. The construction described provides a main guiding device or seat for the lower middle portion of the center-tie.
Additional guiding and controlling devices of novel construction are provided for the centcntie in rear of and above the main seat just described. rlhe novel devices aforesaid are most clearly illustrated in Figs. 3

tie. Each pair or said members comprisesy a ri ght-an gled arm or eye-member 29 formed at one branch 30 with two elongated holes f or slots indicated at 31, one above the other. The other branch of the arm 29 is formed with a round aperture or eye indicated yat 33. Headed screws 34 pass through the slots 31 and adjustably secure the arms or eye-members 29 against the sides or ribs of the extension 13 near its lower end. These sides are termed with shallow slot-ways or depressions 35 in which the arms are received, the eye-bearing branches 32 projecting laterally outward from the sides of the extension 13. The slots 31 afford an upward and downward adjustment of the arms 29 so as to vary the up and down location of the eyes or apertures 33. Each pair of the aforesaid guiding devices is'constituted by one or the arms 29 anda co-operating pin or stud-carrying member, these members each being designated as a whole by the numeral 36. kEach member comprises a 'platelike portion 37 whichis formed with a` pair or elongated screw holes orslots 38and carries at its inner end a forwardly projecting pin or stud 39. The pin carrying members 36 are received in horizontal slot-ways 40 Ycut in the rearA faces of upward extensions 41' on they frame plate 2. The screw holes 38 receive headed screws 42 which are`V threaded into the extensions 41 and rigidly secure the members 36 in place. The elongated holes 38 atiord horizontal adjustments or' the members 36, so that the pins or studs39 may be moved inward toward each other or outward away from Veach other. This adjustment, it will be noted, is at right-angles to the up and down adjustments or' the eyemembers 29 with which the members 36 cooperate, the pins or studs 39 being received in the apertures or eyes 33 and havingy a sliding lit therewith. It will be understood that with the clamping screws 34 and 42 loose, the pairs of guiding members 29 and 36 are free to be properly registered with each other and also in relationship to the main seat atthe under side of the movable member or center-tie.r
The lett-hand member 36 is provided with a forwardly projecting pin 43 (F ig. 6) which carries a vflanged rolleror spool 44 and also an angular guide 45 which is free to turn on the pin 43A and is formed with a guide slot 46 through which the band or tape that connects thecarriage with the spring drum (not shown) passes, saidltape also being confined between the iianges orthe roller 44.
The guiding and controlling devices for the center-tie or element as above described are highly eiiiective but it has been thought good'practice to provide additional orlsupplementary guiding or stop devices which are associated with the lateral extensions of the center-tie, that is, with the end portions of the crossv bar 12. These supplementary devices as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 comprise screw stops 47 'formed with heads 48 which are at the lower endsA ot' the screw stops, these being threaded upward throughk the end portions of the cross bar 12, the nicks or the screws being at the tops or points otv the shanks 'for convenience of adjustment. will be apparent that with one of these guiding or stop devices at each end o the center tie,` undue tipping thereof will be prevented.
The center-tie as a whole is vconstantly urged rearward by spring .devices comprising a pair of coiled draw springs 51 anchored at their rear ends to plates 52 that are periforated to lit over the tops of screws 53 that are threaded into the upper face 'of the rear plate 2. Thescrews 53 are -provided with neck or narrow portions 54 with which the pertorations in the plates 52 engage, and have hexagonal portions to fa. cilitate adjustments. Similarly theforward ends of the draw springs 51 are connected to plates 55 perforated to fit over necked and headed screws 56 that are threaded into ber 11, together-'with the platen 23 and platen carriage 22 supported thereon, are f constantly urged rearward.
The ore-and-aft or backward and for- .ward movements of the variablv settable element or center-tie are controlledby hand actuated devices comprising a push-and-pull link 57. The rear end or this link is received in a .vertical kerf or slot-way 58 formed in an upwardly extending `lug 59 integral with the middle portion or the cross bar 12 or the center-tie. A screw pin 60 bridges the kerf 58 and provide: a pivot for the link 57 which is thus pivotally connected at its rear .end with the center-tie. The link extends horizontally vforward and has riveted or otherwise secured-'to its front end a screw'61. Threaded on this screw is a nut device 62 counter-sunk at its forward end portion as indicated at 63, the interior of the 'counter-sunk. portion being likewise threaded to receive a headed screw 64. The screw 64 serves tosecure against the head or flange 65 of the nut62, the inner end of a crank arm 66, the outer end of said lcrank arnibeing provided with a hand piece or finger button 67. In order to prevent displacement between the nut 62 and the crank arm 66 the opposing faces of 'the crank arm and of the flange 65 are iuted or otherwise suitably roughened so as to give full effect to the clamping action of the screw 611-. The crank arm terminates at its outer end in a pointer 66L which co-operates with an indicating plate 68 that is secured by screws 69 to the downwardly extending flanged portion 4 of the top plate l; the screws passing through washers or separators 70. As is well understood, the pointer and the plaie 68, which is formed with a scale on its front face opposite the pointer, provide co-operating pressure-indieating` devices which indicate the location of the center-tie and the fro-nt or printing faceof the platen in connection with manifolding operations. By manipulating thevtinger piece 6T the nut 62, 65 will be rotated or turned in one direction or the other, thus drawing the screw 6l forward or permitting its movement rearward. These movements tranmitted by trie link 57 to the. center-tiev will either pull or draw the center-tie forward limited extents in opposition to the springs 5l or permit it to be drawn rearward b v said springs.
1 Thus hand controlled movements in a fore-and-aft direction of the movable element or center-tie are afforded, resulting in variable settings of the center-tie and of the platen. During such movement. the centertie will be guided by the seat at its under side and by the devices comprising the pairs of members 29 and 36 disposed to the rear of and above the main seat. rlhe construction is such that while fore-aiid-aft movements and re-settings of the center-tie are readily afforded, it will always be held by its guiding-and controlling devices or means in substantially rigid relationship with the main frame after such settings, the guiding devices being so disposed that shocks and jars incident to the endwise movements of the carriage and otherwise occurring during the operation of the machine, will be withstood and taken up by the center-tie guiding and controlling means.
It will be seen that by my present invention there is provided in combination with a movable element or member, in the present case a center-tie, two sets of guides therefor, one set comprising non-adjustable co-` operating parts, and the other set comprising co-operating parts all of which are adjustable; that the two sets are spaced apart or separated; that the set composed of adjustable parts is constituted by pairs of members, each pair being composed of a part carrying a pin or stud and a part formed with an eye engaged by said pin; that the said pairs of guiding members are arranged at the rear of the movable element or center-tie and somewhat about the other set of guides which co-operate with the under side of the element and comprise a stationary seat therefor, said seat co-operati-ng with the middle portion of the element; that said element is moved by handcontrolled means to vary the plane of the printing face of the platen and that the guiding surfaces or sets of guides are effective to maintain the element in a predetermined path during such movements and in the various 'positions in which it may be set as the result of such movements; that said guides assist said element to withstand displacement due to any shocks or jars which may occur during the operation of the machine and articularly during movements of the platen-and carriage in a direction transverse to the fore-and-aft movements to which the element or center-tie is subjected.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage-supporting element movable fore-and aftl of the machine, and two sets of guides therefor, one set eo-operating with the underside of said element and the other set co-operating with theA rear portion of said element above the other set and comprising pairs of variably engaging parts, said pairs being spaced apart and all of the members of the pairs being separately adjustable.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a movable carriage-supporting element, said element being provided with an upward extension at its rear middle portion, and two sets of guides for said element, one set at the under side of said element and the other set comprising pairs of engaging parts (io-operative with said upward extension.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a movable carriage-supporting element, said element being provided with an upward extension at its rear middle portion, and two sets of guides for said element, one set at the under side of said element and the other set comprising pairs of co-acting parts at the sides of said upward extension, the part-s of each of said pairs being independently adjust-able.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a movable carriage-supporting element, said element being provided with an upward extension at its rear middle portion and also with lateral extensions to the sides of the machine, two sets of guides for said element, one set at the under side of said element and the other set comprising pairs of'co-acting parts at the sides of said upward extension, and supplementary guides for said lateral extensions.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion of a slidably mounted carriage-supporty ing element, guide members adjustably secured to and projecting outwardly therefrom, and other members having forwardly projecting pins that engage slidably in apertures in said guide members, the' pincairying members being adjustable on a stationary partof the machine.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a movable carriage-supporting element, hand controlledfmeans for variably setting said element in a direction fore-and aft ofthe machine, and guiding devices for guiding said element and for 'maintaining it in its set positions, said guiding devices comprising members having horizontally projecting portions formed with apertures, said members being vertically adjustable on said element, and :other members having forwardly projecting pins that are slidably engaged by said apertures, said pin-carrying members being so mounted on a stationary part as to afl'ord adjustments of said pins toward and away from each other transversely of the machine.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage is supported; said carriage being shiftable on said element to change case, hand controlled means for moving said element fore-and-aft of the machine to vary the vertical plane of the printing face of the platen, and two sets of guides for said element, one set comprising non-adjustable co-operating parts and the other set comprising co-operating parts all of which are independently adjustable to aiford takeups both horizontally and vertically.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage is supported,
hand controlled means for moving said element fore-and-aft of the machine to vary the vertical plane of the printing face of the platen, and sets of guides for said element, one set co-operating with the underside ythereof and the other set being arranged Vtogether and comprising pairs of eye and stud members, all of said members being lindependently adjustable. i

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage is supported, hand controlled means for moving said element to vary the plane of the printing face of the platen, and two sets of guides for said element, one set beingconstituted by detachable parts and the other set being constitutedV by surfaces on the frame ofthe machine and co-acting surfaces on said movable element.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage is supported, hand controlled means for moving said element to vary the plane of the printing face of the platen, and two sets o f guides for said element, one set being constituted by detachable parts and the other set being constituted by co-acting surfaces on the frame of the .machine and on said movable element, said 4other set being` effective to'preventdisplacement of said movable element when the detachable parts are removed fromv the machine.

In a typewriting machine, the conibination of a platen, a platen carriage'.l van element on 'which said carriage is supported, said carriage being shiftable on said element to change case, hand controlled means for moving said element to vary the vertical plane of the printing face of the platen, and two sets of guides for said element, one set being `constituted by detachable partsl and the other set being constituted by a plurality of faces oppositely disposed on said movable element and corresponding oppositely disposed faces on the frame of the machine.
15. In a typewriting machine, the com-H bination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage is supported, hand controlled means for moving said element fore-and-aft of the machine to vary the vertical plane of the printing face of the platen, and sets of guides for said element, one set constituted by a seat formed in a stationary part and by an oppositely faced stationary overhang, sai-d seat and said overhang slidably co-operating with faces on said movable element.
16. In a typewriting machine, the coinbination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage is supported, hand controlled means for moving sai e ement fore-and-aft of the machine to vary the vertical plane of the print-ing facs of the platen, said element having an upward extension at its rear middle portion and also having lateral extensions, sets of guides for said element, one set at the under side thereof, another set comprising pairs of slidably engaging parts arranged atvthe sides of the upward extension, and supplementary guides for the lateral extensions, both pairs of slidably engaging parts being adjustable to afford both horizontal and vertical take-ups, and the supplementary guides being relatively adjustable vertically.
17. In a typenfriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage is shittably supported, a hand actuated threaded member, a link connecting said hand actuated member With said element for transmitting' movement thereto in a direction fore-and-att of the machine, and sets of guides for said element, one `set comprising pairs of angular members seated in slots in said element and adjustably secured thereto, and stud-carrying brackets co-operating with apertures in said eye-members, said brackets adjustabrly seated in slots in a stationary part of the machine.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage and platen are vertically shiftable to change case, hand controlled means for moving said element together with said platen and said carriage fore-.and-.aft of the machine to vary the vertical plane of the printing tace of the platen independently of its case shifting movement, and sets of guides `for guiding said e'lement during its ore-and-aft movements, one set of guides co-operating With the under side of said element and the other set being arranged higher and comprising pairs of eye members and co-operating stud members.
19. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, an element on which said carriage and platen are vertically shiftable to change case, hand controlled means for moving said element together With said platen and said carriage tore-and-aft of the machine to vary the vertical plane of the printing face of the platen independently of its case shifting movements, and sets of guides for guiding said elementv during its fore-and-aft shifting movements, one set of guides comprising a seat or depression in the framing of the machine beneath said element, the element ben ing provided with faces Slidably engaging with said seat, and the other set of guides comprising pairs of members aranged above the iirst set and to the rear thereof, each pair comprising a bracket carrying a stud and adjustably secured to the frame, and also an angular arm formed With an eye or hole in which the stud is received, said arm being adjustably secured to said member.
20. In a front strike typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a platen carriage, a carriage rail on which said carriage runs, center tie on Which said rail is shiftably supported to enable the platen and carriage to be shifted independently of the center-tie to change case, hand connections for variably settin@` saidV center-tie ore-and-aft of the machine, and guides for controlling the movements of the center-tie during its movements, and for enabling it to withstand shocks sustained during the operation of the machine, said guides comprising a seat in theV frame below the center-tie and also pairs of studs slidably engaging perforated members adjustably secured to the center-tie at its rear portion.
