Be it known that We, IRvIN lNILLIAMs and WILLIAM H. GARLAND, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Nelson and Kansas City, in the counties oi Saline and Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to permutation padlocks and its object is to provide a device of this character having simple lockingnicchanisrn therein which prevents the Withdrawal of the shackle of the lock except by a predetermined combination, said combination being readily changeable Without the provision of a kejyT or other implement, provided the shackle is unlocked.

A still further object is to provide rneans whereby the actuation of the parts Within the lock is prevented as longjT as a longitudinal pull is exerted upon the shackle.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combina-tions of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred forni of the invention.

Referring to thefi ures by characters of reference,` 1 is a ringli e casing having an interior annular flange 2 therein at the center thereof7 said flange being interrupted by parallel passages 3 formed Within the casing 1 and within extensions 4 upon the outer face of the casing. Annular recesses 5 are formed in the edges ofthe ring 1 and constitute seats for the purpose hereinafter stated. .A shackle 6 extends from the casing of the lock and one arrn 7 of the shackle is longer than the other arm 8, said arm 7 being located Within one of the passages' and being held against withdravvai therefrom by a sto pin 9 which eX- tends through the end o said arm. The other arm 8 of the shackle is adapted to extend through the other passage 3 when the lock is closed but, when the shackleis pulled outward to its greatest extent this short arm 8 thereof is drawn clear of the casing so that the shackle can be turned upon the arm 7. The two arms have recesses 1() Jformed in opposite portions thereof and in arcs concentric with the interior of the casing 1, and the inner walls of these recesses are formed with teeth or serrations 11. The recesses 1() are disposed so that when the arns of the shackle are pushed into the casing said recesses will receive rotatable tuinblcrs. As shown in the drawings one of the tulnblers consists of a disk 12 having an annular flange 13 at the Veriphery thereof, said fiange being rovidhd with teeth 14 upon its inner Jace. ivo substantially se1ni-circular recesses 15 are formed in the ange 13 at distances apart equal to the distances between the passages S. The disk 12 has its central portion struck inward or depressed as shown at 1G. A circular opening 17 is formed Within the central portion of this depression and disposed on the inner face of the depression adjacent the opening is a stop lng 18. The tumbler which has just been described is disposed Within the casing at one side of the flange 2 and is adapted to bear against said lanqe, and another oppositely disposed rotatable tumbler is located adjacent anrd bears upon the other side of the flange 2. This tumbler consists of a disk 19 having an annular flange 20 similar to the hangs 13 and provided With teeth 21 upon its inner face. TWO recesses 22, substantially semi-circular in form are provided in the flange 20 at a distance apart equal to the distance between the passages 3.

A central depression 23 is formed Within the disk 19 and has a circular opening;r 24 at the conter thereof. A dial plate in the form of a disk 25 rests upon the outer face of the tumbler` 19 and has a suitable number of graduations adjacent the peripheryT thereof and a central depression 26 which is adapted to project into the depression 23 and has an angular opening 27 therein. Another disk 28 constitutingr a face plate bears upon the outer face of the tumbler 12 and has a central depression 29 which is adapted to project into the depression 16 and has a circular opening 3U. rhe two disks 25 and 2S bear upon the annular seats 5 hereinhefcre referred to. Projections 31 are formedat desired intervals upon the dial 25. 'lhis bolt has a threaded recess H11 therein adapted to receive a screw 35 extending from a head Il() which is seated within the depression 2l), and has a reduced cylindrical portion 2T which projects through the openings 3l) and 1T. lnterposed between the two tumhlers is a ring 3N having an ang'ular opening therein through jectsy and a slip washer 3U is interposed between this ring and the depression 1G oll tinnbler 1.2 and has a lug 4l) projecting therefrom into the path of the lug 1S lureinbe'l'ore re- Vl'erred to. lt will of course be understood thatthe tumbler 12 will rotate easily upon the reduced portion 3T oi" the head 36, whereas the remaining parts of the lock will be tightly clamped between said reduced portion and the head P3 of holt 32 although the tumbler 19 and the washer t) will be capable of moving independently ol' the disk 25 and ring 38 if sufficient pressure is exerted thereupon to overcome their frietional engagement.

An index mark 41 is located upon the easing 1 at any suitable point, preferably between the passages 3 and close to the periphery of the dial 25. Vhen the recesses 22 and 15 register at the inner ends of the passages 3 it is of course possible to slide the arms of the shackle longitudinally through said recesses and. into the position shown. in Fig. 1. Then it is desired to lock the shackle the same is pushed into the easing, said inward movement being limited by a stop shoulder 42 therein formed upon the flange 2 and the recesses 10 will register with the ttanges 13 and 20. By rotating the dial 25 in either direction by pressing upon one or more of the projections 31 the tumbler 19 will be rotated therewith as will also the washer 39 and lug 40, and this lug will come in contact with lug 18 and cause the tumbler 12 to also rotate. As soon as the reeess in either of the tumblers moves out of register' with the passages 3 the shackle becomes locked. The weight of the lock easing is sufficient to pull the teeth of the tumblers downward into engagement with the teeth 11. on the shackle and it therefore becomes impossible to rotate the tumblers unless the shackle is pressed into the easing so as to disengage its teeth from the tumblers. The combination necessary to open the lock consists of the graduations on the dial which register with the index 41. when recesses l5 and 22 register with the passages 3. Obviously by rotating the dial 25 to the left the lug 40 will swing against the lug 18 and rotate the tumbler 12 until the proper graduation registers with the index. The motion of the dial 25 is then reversed carrying only the tumbler 19 therewith and when the proper graduation registers with which the bolt 32 proy l i l l the index 41 the shackle can he witlnlrawn. While the shackle is unlocked in this manner the eolnbination ofthe lock ean be rhanged.

lt is ol' course understood that the withdrawn shackle will prevent the tumhlers from rotating but by exerting sullieient pressure upon the dial 25 the same can he rotated on the tumbler It), the rotating' ring 3N causing the fasher Si!) to also revolve, One eolnplete rotation of the dial 25 is made to insure the lug lll coming into contact with lug 1N, The rotation ofthe dial 25 is then continued until a desired graduation registers with index 41. The number now registering' with the index L11 is the number of the con'lhination representing the tumbler l2. The dial 25 is then forced in an opposite direction and as the lug 1S is not in the path thereolI lug 4() rotates with the ring 38 and dial 25, although the tumbler 1) will be held stationary by the shackle G. The dial 25 can be turned until any desired graduation is brought in register with the index 41 and this graduation will be the nmnber ol' the combination representing' the. tumbler 1S). lfjuring this changing ol' con'ibination the shackle will remain withdrawn so as to keep the tumblers from rotating and as soon as the change has been effected the shackle can be pushed into the easing until the recesses 1() register with the llanges of the tumblers wlureupon dial 25 can he rotated so as to carry the tumblers therewith and the shackle will he securely locked in place.

lt will be seen that any desired combination can be made and that, too, without introi l ueing any particular tools or implements.

lt is of course to be understood that more than one washer or ring 38 can be employed and il' desired the teeth 11J 14 and 21 maybe dispensed with. llowever, these teeth are extremely desirable in-as-much as they prevent the rotation of the tumblers unless a person has sull ieient knowledge of the lock to draw the shackle and easing toward each other when it is desired to rotate the dial. The face plate 28 is preferably held against rotation in any desired manner. A holding pin 43 may be inserted into the easing 1 through a notch la formed within the periphery ol said face plate.

The preferred form of the invention has been set forth in the foregoing description but l do not limit myself thereto as lf am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacre lcing the advantages thereof, and l therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the claims.

That is claimed is:
