In addition to the notches 17, the disk 16" is provided with an arcuate slot 18 disposed concentric to the edge of said disk and re ceiving therein the pin 18, the slot in question being extended only throughout approximately a quarter of the circumference of the disk for reasons to become obvious as the description proceeds.
Inaddition to the disk 16 which is immovable on the shaft 10, and the disk 16 which is rotatable thereon, an additional disk 16 is rotatably mounted on said shaft and is spaced from the disk 16 by a washer 20, the disk 16 being provided in its peripheral edge with a pair of spaced notches 17 adapted to aline with the notches 17 and 1'7 for the purpose of allowing the teeth 7 of the neck 6 to drop into the same, whereupon when the shaft l0 is rotated by its head 11, the bolt 4 may be withdrawn. The means for rotating the disk 16 upon the shaft to properly position its notches 17", is constituted by the pin 18 which projects through the slot 18 and into an additional and longer arcuate slot 18 formed through the disk 16 concentric with the peripheral edge thereof.
Securing the several disks and washers, and the dial 13 in proper position upon the shaft 10, is a nut 21 disposed on the threaded end of said shaft, a washer 22 being preferably interposed between the nut 21 and the innermost disk 16". By reference more particularly to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be observed that the shaft 10 continues beyond the nut 21 and that said shaft is here reduced to provide a bearing journal 23 which is received by an appropriate bearing formed in one side of the casing 1.
When the several parts of the lock are assembled as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a brake spring 24 bears against the alined peripheral edges of the three disks 16, 16 and 16, thus frictionally locking the same against rotation until the shaft 10 is actuated in the proper manner to produce this result. In so actuating the shaft, the knob 11 is turned to rotate said shaft until one of the numbered graduations on the dial 13 alines with the indicator 14. By this time, the pin 18 has come into contact with one end of theslot 18 and has thereby rotated the disk 16 to the position shown in Fig. 1, thus disposing its pair of notches upwardly directly beneath the teeth 7. The knob 11 is now rotated in the reverse direction, thus causing the pin 18 to strike one end of the slot 18, whereupon the disk l6 will be rotated to dispose its notches 17 in alinement with the notches 17 the proper amount of rotation for this purpose being ascertained by the dial 13 and the indicator 14. Needless to say, the brake spring 24- which has previously retained the disk 16 in its adjusted position, now also frictionally locks the disk 16 against rotation, while the knob 11 is rotated again in the direction in which it was first turned, whereupon the pin 18 travels loosely within the slots to allow the disk 16 to be shifted the proper amount for alining its notches 17 with the previously alined notches 17 and 17". Needless to say, the position of the disk 16 is likewise disclosed to the legitimate operator of the lock by the relation of the dial 13 and indicator 14.
The moment the several pairs of notches are alined the spring 9 forces the entire inner end of the bolt downwardly and disposes the teeth 7 in said notches, whereupon turning of the knob 11 in the proper direction will retract the bolt. When this has been done and the door or the closure equipped with the lock has been opened, the knob 11 is turned to such an extent as to allow the teeth 7 to be forced from the alined notches, whereupon the spring 8 will again project the bolt. It will be obvious that the latter may be provided with the beveled end shown in the drawing wherebv it will be automatically retracted when the closure is shut. or that said bolt may have a square end. thus necessitating that it be retracted by its actuating means before the door or the like can be locked.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be evident that although extremely simple construction has been provided for carrying out the object of the invention, the complete lock will be highly efficient in operation and may be applied to a vast number of uses by making the necessary alterations falling within the scope of the invention.
I claim:
A lock comprising a shaft having at one end an operating knob and at its other end a reduced journal, the portion of said shaft adjacent the knob being squared while the portion contiguous to the journal is externally threaded, a circular indicating plate contacting with the knob and having a central square opening through which the squared portion of the shaft passes, an operating disk spaced from the indicating plate and likewise having a square central opening receiving said squared portion of the shaft, a nut on the threaded portion of said shaft, a plurality of tumbler disks rotatable on the shaft between the nut and the operating disk, all of said disks having peripheral notches to be alined, and pick-up disk operating means actuated by rotation of the operating disk; in combination with a casing having a side interposed between the indicating plate and operating disk, and an 130 additional side having a bearing in which In testimony whereof I have hereunto set the journal of the shaft is revolubly mountmy hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- 10 ed, a locking bolt slidable in the casing and nesses.
