To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY Os'rRosKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Keyless Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks capable of being operated without the use of a key.
An object of the invention is to provide a lock of the above character which. may be operated by persons familiar with its operation without the use of a key, but which cannot be operated by others without first being instructed in its use.
To this end the invention comprehends a novel form of operating means which includes a rotatable disk mounted in the lock casing and normally out of engagement with the locking bolt, the said member being capable of transverse movement with respect to said casing toengage the bolt when in a predetermined position and means located without the casing for determining the position of the rotatable member to effect such engagement.
The invention also consists of the follow ing novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which; 1 I

Mounted within the casing and capable of reciprocating movement therein is a locking bolt 13, the said bolt being guided in its movement by flanges 14 secured to the casing and located at each of the side edges of the bolt, which latter is guided through the usual bolt opening 15, provided in one edge of the casing. The locking bolt 13 is preferably of rectangular formation and extends only a short distance within the casing 10, its inward movement being limited by means of a stop pin 16. Pivotally secured to the bolt 13 as shown at 17 is one end of an arm 18, theopposite end of this arm being formed with an aperture 19 for a purpose hereinafter apparent.
Rotatably mounted Within the casing 10 is a disk 20, the said disk having projecting from one face a hub 21, which is mounted in the bearing 22 in one face of the casinglO. The opposite face of the disk 20 carries a hub 23, having formed therein a threaded socket 24 for the purpose of receiving one end of a shank 25. This shank is formed with a spline 26, in which is received a feather 27 one end of the latter entering a notch 28 in the hub 23 of the disk 20 which is adapted to be brought into register with the spline 26 to hold the parts associated. The end of the shank 25 adjacent the hub 23 is provided with an enlargement 29, which has a bearing in an opening 30 formed in the plate 11. The mounting of the disk within the casing 10 is such as to permit of a limited movement thereof transversely of the casing. Carried by the disk 20 is a lug or pin 31, which is adapted to be engaged in the opening 19formed in the free end of the arm-18.
The disk 20 is normally held from engagement with the arm 18 and for this purpose the shank 25 is provided with a col lar 32 andpositioned between this collar and a cap 33 is a coiled spring 34, the cap being held in position upon the shank by means of screws or other fastening devices 35 engageable with the esoutcheon plate 36 secured to the face of the" door. This spring acts to normally force the pin 31 away from the arm 18, so that the disk will be free to rotate threading the said finger piece upon the shank and locking the same thereon by means of a pin.
In order to hold the arm 18 for engagement by the pin 31 to move the bolt to'a locking position, the casing 10 has secured thereto-an arm 38- npon which the'tree end of the arm 18 is adapted to rest, the length of the arm 38 being so regulated that a slight forward movement of the bolt 13 will move the pivoted arm from engagement therewith, The locking bolt 13 carries a rearwardly projecting stop 39, which is adapted to provide a. support for the arm 18whenthebolt isv in. a locking position, so that it may be engagedby the pin 31.
In order to determine the position of the pinso as to move the same intoengagementwith the arnr18, the cap 33 is provided with suitable indicating characters in the form of numbers, two a of, which correspond to the twopositions of the arm, 18 when the latter is at rest. One of these numbers, for example, the numeral 8 will indicate .the'upper position, so that when the finger piece 37 is rotated to a position to cause the. arrow thereon to register with, the number 8, the pin 31 willbe in position to engage the aperture 119 in the arnr 18, this being, the 1111 locked position. of the bolt. When the arrow upon the finger piece 37, is brought into register with the numeral. 4- the pin 31 willbe in position to register with the aperture 19 inthe arm 18 when the bolt, is in its locking position.
' Inorder to operate thebolt the finger piece 37 is rotated until the arrow registers with the numeral 8,, assuming that the bolt is in its retracted position, the said finger piece is then pulled forward, when the pin 31 will enter the opening 19 in the arm 18. The finger piece is, then rotatedto the left or toward. the boltedge of thelock until it stops, whereupon the finger, piece is released and the pi-nhauto matioallydisengaged from the arm 18,,leavii1g thebolt in its locking-position, To retract the bolt the finger piece is V rotated until the arrow registers with the numeral- 4,,whereupon the said fi'nger piece is pulled outward causing the pin 31 to engage the opening 19. The finger piece is then rotated. to the right as far as possible, thereby retracting the bolt. When this has *beenj accomplished the releasing of the finger 31606 will automatically disengage the pin rom the opening as previously set forth.

2.
