Specification of Letters Patent.

To a, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FINLEY A. BUOEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rayland, in the county of Jefferson, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to monkey wrenches and has for its object to provide a wrench of this type which may be quickly and easily adjusted within certain limitations and which will be provided with a supplemental adjusting means arranged to permit of final adjustment of the wrench, the parts being arranged in a simple and novel manner.
Another object is to provide a wrench which may be manufactured at a low figure.
It is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the wrench with the lock member in operative position, and shown in inoperative position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, a portion of the wrench handle being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on line 3'3 of Fig. 1, taken through the-adjusting screw. Fig. 4 is an elevational view of a modified form of the invention, the lock member being shown in inoperative position. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line EOJ of Fig. 4 with the locking member in operative position.
Referring now to the drawings, thepresent invention comprises a stock 5, having a transverse stationary aw 6 at one end, and a handle 7 at the other. A sliding jaw 8 has a passage 9 formed therethrough in which the stock 5 is slidably engaged for movement of the j aw 8 toward and away from the jaw 6. A recess 10 is formed in the jaw 8, opening through its side faces and also through its forward face, to form lower and upper spaced portions 11 and 12 respectively. Alining vertical openings 13 are formed through the portions 11 and 12 and receive a pivot rod 14 upon which there is mounted a lock member 15 for pivotal movement into and out of the opening 10. This lock member has formed thereupon a vertical series of horizontal teeth 16 which, when the member is in the opening 10, mesh with the teeth of a longitudinal rack 17 formed in one side face of the stock 5, and when the lock member is thus engaged, it is of course held against movement longitudinally of the stock.
The lock member 15 is somewhat narrower than the space between the portions 11 and 12, so that it is susceptible of sliding movement upon the rod 14, so that slight movement of the jaw 8 is permitted when the lock member is in operative position.
A transverse chamber '19 is formed in the jaw 8 above the recess 10 and a perforation 20 is formed through the portion of the jaw Which separates the chamber 19 from the recess. A vertical, threaded passage 21 is formed in the upper wall of the chamber 19 and receives the upper threaded end of an adjusting screw 22 which lies in the chamber 19 and which has a stem 23 slidably engaged in the opening 20.
It will thus be seen that when the lock member 15 is moved into the recess 10, a portion thereof will lie beneath the perforation 20, the lock member being formed for this purpose, and that the adjusting screw 22 may be operated to bring its stem 23 into a depression 18 in the lock member, further operation of the screw moving the jaw 8 upwardly, as will be understood, and this movement may be continued to finally adjust the wrench throughout the sliding movement of the-lock member upon the rod 14.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, there is shown a modified form of the invention in which the sliding jaw 8 is provided with the stock-receiving passage 9 and with a horizontally extending recess A in one of its side faces, and communicating with the passage 9 to expose the rack 17. A rod B extends transversely of the recess A and longitudinally of the stock 5, and engaged with this rod for pivotal movement, there is a lock member C corre sponding to the lock member 15. The rod B is located rearwardly of the rack 17 so that the lock member is pivoted at its rearward end and it is movable upon its pivot to bring its teeth 16 into and out of engagement with the rack 17 to hold the sliding jaw against movement. A strap spring D is secured at one end to the lock member, and is arranged to lie against the inner wall of the recess A and under tension when the lock member is in 0 erative position, the tendency being to hol the lock member yieldably against movement into operative position. As shown, the lock member is susceptible of some vertical movement upon the rod B, as in the first described form. An adjusting screw E is engaged in the sliding jaw above the recess A and has a stem F extending downwardly and the screw may be operated to bring its stem into and out of the recess A. When the lock member C is in operative position, it lies in position to receive this stem F in a depression G in its upper surface, and it will thus be seen that engagement of the stem in the depression will hold the lock member in operative position and against movement by the spring D. The adjusting screw may be operated as in the first described form, to move the sliding jaw with re spect to the lock member, to finally adjust the wrench. The free end of the lock member C lies flush with the forward face of the sliding jaw, and. the mutually adjacent faces of the jaw and lock member arerecessed, as shown at H, to permit of the insertion of an instrument to move the lock member out of the recess, should the spring D fail to operate.
It will be readily understood that a spring may be incorporated'in the first form of the invention, as shown at Z, to throw the lock member out of the recess when the stem of the adjusting screw is moved out of the depression 18.
What is claimed is:
1. A wrench comprising a stock having a stationary jaw at one end, said stock having a longitudinal rack, a jaw having a passage in which the stock is slidably engaged for movement of the jaw toward and away from the stationary jaw, said movable jaw having a recess formed therein to expose the rack, a pivot rod engaged at its ends in the sliding jaw and extending across the recess thereof, a lock member mounted upon the rod for pivotal movement into andout of the recess and for sliding movement longitudinally of the rod, said lock member having teeth arranged to engage the rack when the member is in'the opening, said sliding jaw having achamber formed therein above the recess and having a perforation communicating with the recess and with the chamber, an adjusting screw lo cated in the chamber and having a threaded end engaged in the jaw for movement of the adjusting screw longitudinally of the stock when said screw is rotated, said screw having a stem engaged in the perforation of the jaw and arranged to enter the depression of the lock member and bear against said member when the latter is in locking position to hold the lock member in operative position.
2. A wrench comprising a stock having a stationary jaw, a jaw mounted upon the stock for sliding movement, a lock member arranged for cooperation with the stock to hold the sliding jaw against movement and pivoted to the sliding jaw for movement into and out of cooperative relation to the stock, said sliding jaw being arranged for slight movement upon the stock independently of the lock member, means for holding the lock member yieldably out of operative position, and means for moving the sliding jaw with respect to the lock member and for holding the lock member in operative position.
