UNITED STATES PATENT orrion.
GLAMPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1907.
Application filed January 30, 1907. Serial No. 354,862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN Lv SIMMoNs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Lincoln and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Clamping Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for handling monuments, pillars and like heavy articles, and its object is to provide a new and improved clamping device or cradle, for convenient attachment to the article and for securely gripping the same, to permit of hoisting or lowering the article in the quarry, shop, cemetery or other place and without danger of the article toppling over or the clamping device becoming loose or detached.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in Which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of part of the improvement.
The frame A of the clamping device consists essentially of the side arms A, A rigidly connected with each other near their ends by cross bars A A carrying sleeves A A between the side arms, so as to form handles for conveniently lifting the frame A by hand whenever it is desired to do so. The ends of the side arms A, A of the frame are connected with cables, chains, rods or like devices B of a derrick or other hoisting device of any approved construction, to permit of raising or lowering the frame A and an article O held therein, as hereinafter more fully described.
In order to securely engage the article O, eccentric rollers D and D are provided, arranged for peripheral engagement with opposite faces of the article O, the eccentric shafts or trunnions D and D of the said eccentric rollers being adjustably held in sets of notches A A formed in the side bars A, A and leading to longitudinal channels A, A so as to permit of moving the rollers D and D toward or from each other according to the width of the article to be clamped by the device. The notches A A are slightly inclined toward each other so as to prevent the shafts or trunnions D or D from accidentally leaving the notches when the device is use The rollers D and D are provided at one end with dogs E engaging ratchet teeth A, A formed on the upper edges of the side arms. A, so as to hold the clamping rollers D and D against return movement after the rollers are in engagement with the opposite sides of the article O, and the frame A is released from the derrick or other hoisting device.
In order to prevent the polished faces of the article Ofrom being marred by the clamping rollers D and D, the peripheral faces thereof are provided with suitable soft cushions D D of rubber or other suitable material, which cushions have a tendency to firmly grip the faces of the article 0 when the frame A is lifted. Now by the arrangement described, the clamping rollers D and D can be readily adjusted toward or from each other according to the width of the article O to behandled, and by mounting the clamping rollers D and D eccentrically in the frame A and lifting the latter by the derrick or other hoisting device or by hand, it is evident that the clamping rollers D and D firmly engage the opposite faces of the article C, so as to firmly grip the same, thereby holding the article suspended in the frame A when the latter is raised or lowered.
The clamping device shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, composed of few parts, and not liable to easily get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A clamp for monuments, pillars and like articles comprising a frame, a hoisting device connected with the said frame, and clamping rollers eccentrically mounted on the said frame independent of the said hoisting device, the rollers being adapted to engage opposite sides of the article.
2. A clamp for monuments, pillars and like articles comprising a frame, a hoisting device connected with the said frame, clamping rollers eccentrically mounted on the said frame independent of the said hoisting device, the rollers being adapted to engage opposite sides of the article, and means for holding the said clamping rollers against return movement.
3. A clamp for monuments, pillars and like articles comprising a frame, a hoisting device connected with the said frame, clamping rollers eccentrically mounted on the said frame independent of the said hoisting device, the rollers being adapted to engage opposite sides of the article, a dog on the end of the clamping roller, and teeth on the said frame for engagement by the said dog.
4. A clamp for monuments, pillars and like articles comprising a frame, a hoistin device connected with the said frame, an clamping rollers eccentrically mounted on the said frame in dependent of the said hoisting device, the rollers being provided. with peripheral clamping cushions adapted to engage opposite sides of the article,
A clamp for monuments, pillars and like articles comprising a frame having side arms, cross bars for connecting the sidearms rigidly with each other, the cross bars forming handles for lifting the clamp by hand, and clamping rollers eccentrically mounted on the said side arms a distance inward of the said cross bars, the said clamping rollers being adapted to engage opposite sides of the article when lifting the frame on raising the said cross bars.
6. A clamp for monuments, pillars and like articles, comprising a frame adapted to be lifted and having side arms, each of said side arms being provided with a longitudinal slot, and one of the sides of the slot being provided with notches, and clamping rollers having eccentric shafts for engagingthe said notches.
7. A clamp for monuments, pillars and like articles comprising a frame adapted to be lifted and having side arms provided with notches and teeth, clamping rollers having eccentric shafts for engaging the said notches, and dogs on the ends of the said rollers for engaging the said teeth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
