BRICK-CARRIER.

Be it known that I, JOHN G. MCDOWELL, of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Brick-Carrier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of same.

My invention relates to the devices used for holding and carrying a row of bricks, and is designed to aiford a cheap, simple, and efiective device of this character which may be adapted to rows of difierent length and can be quickly and easily adjusted to support any length of row at the center.

In the drawings, 2 represents a fixed jaw having an inwardly-projecting shoulder 3, arranged to fit over the end brick. The stem of this jaw is slotted at 4 and is thence bent or curved into the handle portion 5, which extends at right angles to the plane of the jaw. The stem 6 of the movable jaw 7 is provided along its lower edge with ratchet-teeth 8, which engage a tooth 9 in the floor of the slot of the fixed jaw, through which the stem extends.

The handle 5 is provided with a slide 10, which fits neatly thereon and can be moved along to any desired point. The handle is about one-half the length of the stem 6, so

that when the jaws are clamped upon the end bricks of the row the slide can be moved to a center of the row no matter what its length within the limits of the device. The carrying handle or hook leading to a hoist may be attached to an eye 11 on the slide.

The advantages of my invention result from the quick and easy adjustment of the slide upon the handle, which enables the lifting force to be exerted at the center of the row irrespective of its length, andalso from the ratchet connection between the jaws, which 1 permits an easy and quick adjustment to suit the length of the row and holds the jaws in adjusted position.

Many variations may be made in the form and arrangement of the jaws and their connections, the handle, and the sliding member without departing from my invention.

I claim 1. A brick-carrier having two jaws, one of' along the handle; substantially as described.

3. A brick-carrier having a slotted station ary jaw with a tooth in the slot, a movable jaw having a toothed stem extending through the slot andengaging the teeth therein; sub stantially as described.

4.. A brick-carrier having a slotted station= ary jaw with a tooth in the slot, a movable jaw having a toothed stem extending through the slot and engaging the tooth therein, a handle extending from the stationary jawtoward the toothed jaw, and a slide movable along the handle; substantially as described.

5. A brick-carrier having jaws, one of the jaws being provided with an overhanging handle of about one-half the length of the carrier, and a slide adjustable along the handle; substantially as described.

6. A carrier having two jaws, one of said jaws having aconnecting-bar extending over the bricks or materialcarried, the other-jaw having a handle" extending longitudinally over the connecting-bar, and a supporting device adjustable to different points along the said handle; substantially as described.
