Description

PATENTED MAY '7, 1907. WOLFE.

AIPLIOATIDN FILED NOV.19. 1905,
WITNESSES W ject isto provide a new and improved finger perfluous upward movement of the players player's fingers when raised after actuating heated by clampin screws C with the uparner EEEIC Jl-ilxiES ARTHUR EVANS AN.
llilONTANA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7,1907.
Application filed November 19,1906. Serial No. 344,172.
To all whom (it may concern:
Be it known that we,- JAMES ARTHUR Evans and JOHN FREDERICK WoLrr, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Deer Lodge, in the county of Powell and State of Montana, have-invented a new and Improved Finger-Guide, of 'hich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to musical instruments of thecornet or horn type, and itsv obguide, arranged to prevent or check all surfingers when raised from the actuated valves, thus facilitating speedy and difiicult l ngering of quick passages in the piece of music to be'played.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and thenpointed outin the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying draw'v ings forming "a part of this specification, in which similir characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is aside elevation of the improvement as applied; Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the improvement detached from the instrument.
The improved finger guide shown in the drawings consists essentially of a band or bar A of an approximately U shape and extending with its middle portion over thefinger pieces 8,13, B of the keys of the instrument, to limit the rising movement of the the keys to produce the desired tones according to the notes of the piece of music performed at the time. The ends of the side arms of the band or bar A are pivotally conright arms D attac 18d to split bands E encircling the barrels or cylinders E l 4 of the outermost keys of the instrument, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The bands E--E are clamped in place on the barrels B B? by suitable clamping screws E, which when loosened permit of raising or lowering the from the finger pieces B, B and B of the keys of the instrument. When the desired position has been reached the clamping bands E are secured in place on the barrels B B by screwin up the clamping screws F.
New by the arrangement described the middle portion of the band or bar A limits the rising movement of the players fingers operating the keys B, B, B and hence all superfluous upward movement of the player 5 fmgers is prevented and the player is enabled to produce finer, clearer and more even tones especially in quick movements and in passages where diiiicult fingering occurs.
In case the finger guide is not desired it is only necessary for the player to swing the bar or band A downward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. I
The device is equally serviceable on instruments used by musicians as well -as by beginners.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. In a cornet or like musical instrument the combination with-the keys of' a linger guide arranged above the keys and spaced apart therefrom in the direction of movement of the keys to limit the rising movement of the players fingers, and means whereby to swing said guide into and out of position.
2. A ringer guide for a cornet or like musical instrument comprising a pair oi split bands for encircling the valve barrels of the instrument, clamping screws for the ends of the band s, arms extending from the said bands, and a U-shaped finger guide pivotally connected at its ends to the said arms.
3. A finger guide for a cornet or like musical instrument, comprising clamps for attachment to the valve barrels of the'instrument, and a guide having its ends pivotally connected with the said clamps.
. In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ARTHUR EVANS. JOHN FREDERICK NOLFF.
Witnesses split bands E, so as to bring'the middle portion of the band or bar A the desired distance 1 1*. H. lvLlASON, A. W. Form.
