PLACKET-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patentv Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed July Z0, 1905. Serial No. 270,534.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PREN- TIOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Placket- Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in placket-closures, and to a new method of closing and securing like openings in garments in the simplest and best possible manner.
To this end my invention consists of a series of closed fiat wire loops arranged at or near the edges of the openings desired to be drawn together, and a lacing cord or string engaging with said closed flat loops in such manner as to have a free movement therein to draw the edges of such openings together, or to permit the edges of such openings to be readily drawn apart.
My invention further consists in arranging a series of; closed fiat wire loops upon strips of flexible material which may be cut off in suitable lengths according to the purposes required, and sewed or otherwise secured to the adjacent edges of an opening in a garment, and a lacing cord or string engaged with the said loops to provide ready means for closing or opening ,the edges of said placket or like opening.
My invention has for its objects, first, to provide a placket fastening which shall be of as simple a. nature as possible and which shall effectually hold the placket of a womans skirt, or like opening, securely closed and in such manner as to assume a neat and tidy appearance without indicating its presence as attached to the skirt; second, to construct a placket-closure which can be easily manipulated by the wearer to open and close said placket or like opening, and third, to
construct a placket-fastening of flexible strips or material having a series of flat wire loops secured thereto at equal distances apart in such manner that said strips may be readily cut off into lengths required to fit the edges of various sized openings.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts, Fi ure 1, represents a-front elevation of a plac et having my improved fastening applied thereto, with the parts in a closed position. Fig. 2, a similar view, with the edges of the placket drawn apart, or in an open position. Fig. 3, a detail view of a stri of flexible material having a series of flat loops applied thereto, and Fig. 4, a similar view of two lengths cut therefrom, and connected together at their lower ends ready for attachment to the placket or like opening of a garment.
In carrying out my invention, a series of fiat closed loops A, preferably formed from properly tempered a closed loop upon the surface of the material with arms B, having their extremities bent down at right angles to form setting prongs, are applied at or near each edge of the placket or like opening of a garment, as disclosed more fully in Fig. 1, ofthe drawings. The main object to be attained in my invention being to have said loops lie flat and smooth-upon the surface of the material to which they may be attached, and yet capable of being slightly raised at their free ends to admit the lacing cord or string.
Another feature of my invention is to provide a placket-closure comprising flexible strips, of suitable material, having a series of closed fiat loops A, applied thereto and at suitable distances apart thereon, in such manner that the said strips may be sold as an article of trade, and afterward cut into suitable lengths by the purchaser to adapt the same to the edges of various sized plackets or other like openings.
In either event the nature and objects of the invention are substantially the same, and the adjacent edges of the placket, or other like opening, being provided with the series of closed flat loops, a suitable lacing cord or string D, is passed therethrough, from bottom to top, in the manner illustrated in the drawings, and the mere act of drawing tightly upon the free ends of said lacing cord or string serves to close the placket, or other like opening, and the cord being passed. around the waist of the wearer convenient to be manipulated, can be tied in position to hold the parts securely together. By simply releasing the tie, the edges of the placket can be readily drawn apart to open the same, the lacing cord or string running freely through said loops to accomplish this result.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A placket-closure, comprising two flat flexible strips each provided with a series of closed fiat wire loops, arranged to lie flatwise wire, and bent to provide upon said strips and having a lacing cord engaged therewith, in combination with the adjacent edges of a placket or other like opening, substantially as described.
2. A placketclosure, comprising a series of closed wire loops, each having an attaching table and setting prongs, and arranged opposite each other on the adjacent edges of a placket or other like opening whereby the front of each loop may be raised for the insertion of a lacingcord, substantially as described.
3. In a placket closure, and in combination therewith, a flat flexible strip of material provided with a series of closed flat Wire 15 substantially as and for the purpose speci- .20
fied.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature. in presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
