maovnmnm' m omits.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of'the lame- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, U. W. BREWER, of Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chorus; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my, invention consists in the construction of a churn in three compartments, the centre com- .partment containing the working-partor'common dashers, whereby the cream is worked, and thrown out right and left, forming two continuous currents, in the two side compartments, and then returned-in the centre or working-compartment, to be worked and thrown out as before; and, by this free rotary motion, every particle of cream is worked into butter, the butter is easily made, andeasily collected. I
In order to enable othersskilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, in section, showing the three compartments, and
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of another side, showing the shape'of the partitions between the compartments.
A represents a circular tub, of suitable dimensions, which is provided with two T-shaped partitions, B B.
The arms of said partitions fit into grooves in the sides of the tub, and the upper edges of the partitions are below the edge of the tub, as clearly shown in fig. 2.
The tongues of the T-shaped partitions BB rest on the bottom of the tub A, leaving, on each side of them, a passage from the centre compartment 0 to the side compartments D D.
On the outer side of the partitions B B, that is, in the side compartments D D, are secured board's, E E, which are cut curved or circular, so that the edges thereof are even, or flush, with the edges of the tongues on'the partitions B B, and the outer side corresponds with the curve of the tub.
The'boards E E extend above the partitions B B, and are of the same height as the tub.
in the centre compartment O, is placed a number of dashers, G G, of any suitable form and shape.
The cover ofthe churn consists of a circular box,
H, corresponding in size with the centre co1npart-' ment 0.
The sides of the box H extend downward, and fit in the grooves in the sidesof the tub A, on top of the partitions .B B, forming a close joint with them.
The side compartments D D are closed by lids, I l, hinged to the centre box H, as shown in fig. 1;
The. shaft F, with its dashers G G, is turned by a crank, J on the outside of the tub A.
, When the cream is poured in, and'the churn closed,
by turning the crank J, it will'be seen that the dashers' G G throw the cream into the side, compartments on each'side, forming two continuous currents around the boards E E, the cream returning to the centre compartment, to be again thrown out. 7
By this arrangement, the butter is made far easier and in much less time than usual, and, when ready, it is very easy to remove the cover, dashers, and partition's,=to collect the butter.
' I am aware that'a churnsbox having screen-partitions, for forcingthe cream through and around the compartments formed thereby, is not new. What I claim, i's-- The combination of the circular box A and box l-l with movable T-shaped partitions B B, boards E E, a
and shaft F, with its arms G G, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing,1 have hereunto set my hand, this 13th day of October, 1868.
I O. W. BREWER,
Witnesses:
Jno. E. PUTMAJS, GEO. H. Bnrnvrnn.
