CURRYCOMB.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern;

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER P. FINE- GAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Sheridan, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to certain improvements in curry-combs and more especially in that class of such devices wherein are grouped various tools in. addition to the parts properly pertaining to the curry-comb, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a light, strong and durable structure wherein certain accessories useful to horse and stable-men are combined in a novel and improved way with the essen tial parts of the curry-comb.

The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts of the improved curry-comb and of the several articles combined therewith, whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective detail view showing a portion of the improved curry-comb designed for use as a wire-breaking implement.

In these views 1 indicates the metal plate from which the back or body portion of the curry-comb is produced and 2 indicates the metal frame or re-inforce held in the usual way to said metal plate or back by means of The frame or reinforce 2 has an end portion 4 extended beyond the rear side of the back 1 and this extended portion 4 is bent upward at an inclination from the rear edge of the back and has an integral bent portion 5 of reduced width extended. parallel with but in a plane above and behind the back 1 and passed axially through a wooden grip or handle 6 which is provided, as herein shown, with a metal ferrule 7 to prevent it from splitting.

The wooden grip or handle 6 will be primarily bored to receive the bent and reduced extension or shank 5 and the said extension or shank is of such a length as to extend entirely through the grip or handle 6 from one end to the other thereof, and has an extremity 8 projecting beyond the rear end of said grip or handle, the said extremity 8 being, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, formed into a screw-driver by means of which screws may be operated in the ordinary way.

The forward end of the frame or re-inforce 2 is forked and. has its bifurcations 11 and 12 curved away from each other and across the top surface of the back 1 of the curry-comb toward opposite ends of the forward edge thereof, rivets 13 being provided for holding the said'bifurcations to the back 1.

The fork or bifurcation 11 has its extremity 14 extended beyond one of the lateral edges of the back 1 of the curry-comb and the said extremity 14 is made of increased thickness and is provided with a kerf or groove 15 adapted to receive a wire as, for example a bail-tie over which the said grooved extremity 14 may thus be applied and which may be quickly and easily broken by merely imparting a twisting movement to the curry comb. The thickened extremity 14 will also be found useful in place of a hammer and as a knocker or abutment upon which the currycomb may be struck for freeing it from dust.

The other fork or bifurcation 12 of the frame or re-inforce 2 has its end portion secured by a rivet 13 at some distance from the lateral edge of the curry-comb back 1 in such a way as to form a stop or shoulder adjacent to which is pivotally held as indicated at 17, a curved hook or point 16 having its larger butt end adapted to abut upon the end portion of the frame-fork 12 when the hook extends as shown in Fig. 1 beyond the lateral edge of the curry-comb back 1.

When the hook 16 is not required for use, the structure is such that it may be readily and freely swung upon its pivotal pin or rivet 17 in such a way as to fold the hook back over and flush upon the back or body portion 1 of the curry-comb in which case the pointed hook will not project beyond the edge of the back 1. The position of the folded hook is shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines at 00.

The pivoted foot-hook 16 will be found very convenient for use in cleaning the horses feet and since it is practically a part of the curry-comb back it will always be in position for convenient use while being capable of being compactly folded up when not in actual use.

From the above description of my improvements it will be seen that the improved curry-comb"is of an extremely simple, strong and inex ensive construction and is especially we adapted for use since the screwdriver, hammer, wire-breaker and foot-hook are all held in position for convenient use and still each of these devices when not required for use, is out of the way and does not interfere in any way with the free use of the other devices.

The screw-driver and hammer will be found of great service in adjusting toe-Weights and for other like purposes, the screw-driver also serving as a gouge by means of which the hoofs may be cleaned when desired. The grooved hammer 14 also serves as an effect- We wire-breaker for breaking bale-ties and the like, and the pivoted hook 16 serves for cleaning the crevices of the hoofs as above described.

It Will also be understood that the device constructed according to my invention is capable of some modification without material departure from the principles and spirit of the invention and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise form and arrangement of the several parts of the device herein set forth in carrying out my invention in practice.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1S 1. A curry-comb comprising a body portion and a frame or re-inforce secured to the body portion and having one end provided with a handle and its other end provided with a portion extended beyond an edge of the body portion and provided with a groove or trierf adapted to receive a wire bale-tie or the 2. A curryscomb comprising a body portion and a frame or re-inforce secured to the body portion and having one end provided with a handle and its opposite end formed with forks extended across the upper surface of the body portion toward opposite ends of the front edge portion thereof, one of the forks being extended beyond an edge of the body portion and being thickened and provided with a kerf or groove to receive a wire bale-tie or the like.
