My invention relatos Ln tilntciu-ss of bei!v stende one 'forni oi' which ib Lilo s|.ii, jeei.111at, iler ol" my Patent No. 8025756 grunt-ed on the 24th doy oi" October, 1905.
l The prineipni object ni Lne provient invent-ion is to improve bodsbeinis olV tins diameter in certain ways, so :is io simpify the oonstruction of the various features lieroo' inni facilitate the adjustment or the noi-.opium of the bod into the various positions. in which the occupant; has bo be pinned.
Reference is to be inni to tho :umonipanying drawings forming a pari; o] this sponic-n tion, in whn'h snniinr olim'nctere nf reference indio-nike corresponding perl54 in nii zii@ Iignres.
Figure l is i1 porspeetivc View of n.11 invnlid b frd, showing my prosixnll niprinvniunLs; Fig. 2 is u longitudinal section ni iii(- sanno; Fig. 3 is a snntnnnil View ni n iii-hul nn un oniurgod Sonie; Fi n 'i is n sei'ftionui view oi' n nluinp shown in "ign 2; Fig. 5 is n .finie cleveion nl onc-iinif of tlm cinnp; ["igs. i' anni ari: views similari' to Fig'. i, showing other ways in which the chimp muy be oinpinyw; Fig. S iS nl cnil oiovntioii oi' n. porlinn of ihn boiisionii, snowing u winch n invii i# om pioyed, .Lnd cinnip for vmpinn-Lnnf 1L; {"ig i) 1s :i sectional `sien' on ihn inw. n A n of Fig n; and Fig. i() is n. nnolinnni Non ni' :i Infini 'm n. i1ond-1i2$t.
I have shown my invention us boing' :1ppiied to one of tim mpii'i i'mnb of innistoanls 10. The nprigile nf -iniii-iihfwui on one omi nro provided im: ii nin-nn: inr soy-mrt ing n winch. This unimos is bonn .n iin* forni nl n clump consisting ni' 1mi :wanner-i Il. "hoso mcn'liwrs nre formed fiom ine suino patwrnnnii are dindin-uurs o! mail.
other. Eaoli is proviilmi with nenn'mi nxonsion or jaw 1;? piojei'i-ing from the body n1; one end, und with disk-like projieniions i3 near the other end. These projections mnsLit-ute curved bearing suriiwos winni the um parts of the clamp are secured ragni-her by means of a. bolt ,14 nud nnl*I 15 looiitoii between the parts l2 and 13. The jaws 12 are edopifr." tu clasp any object, as for exnmpie tno upright oi' the bedstead 1U.
When the nut is tightened up upon the boli., the two members oI' the clamp sw'il' Lowrnd each other about the projections l as pivote, nomi Lhcjmvs l2 securely clasp the object to be lie-M2 This permits the j uws to be varied to accommodate objects of varying sizes nil shapes. When secured in this manner two o .these elznnpe, one upon each of the two uprigiits at one end of the bod, are doeigrwd to support a. shaft 3.6, and for this purpoae they are provided with an opening 17 through which the shaft passes. llns opening is eiongnbeii, thus pennting the expandlng end oontrnotmg of the space between the cin'ved portione l2. The shaft 1s provided with menus for receiving a. handle 18 by which it is operated, end it is also provided with :L winch in the form of s. toothed wheel 1!) with which n. pawi 20 on om: of tin'. dumps engages. Ii; will he obsions that the rolia-:Lion oi" the handle Wli conse Lina einit to be Lnrnud, and heid in any desired. position. V 'Y The winni; wliiuli is illustratori in the drawings isnbstaniliniiy the sinne nfs that shown Vin my prior petrnl., Lne simil; being provided with perforation# 21 for ruiusiving agflexible member or bolt 32, innl tno rotation of the :shaft niting in i-ln winilnff of the beit on the Simi?. in i-xi'o diront-ione. 'hifi-oni the Shaft ne holz possess nlnnn'diy on one sie to 'a nomi naar the top of' the bed and down- Vnixidi on the other Vside passing under lthe inni. Vinfstend of using ai roller extending urnas die irinno oi' the bed for supporting Lin: bolt, l provide n nox-ies of roii'J-rssnpV pulleil 'i3' clumps i-.nnetrnntcfi in the following nnnnwr: 1
ilnih vlmnp is solnoninit. ein'iinr to the vimini iioseibesi nlios'e, being made of two iinpin'uo parte 22" wini'li @nu hir enst from ihn sinne pattern. Euch [nu-t :is provided will: Iwo i-nrveii extensions nl' jnws .ifa one emi, inni et a. poiriisn soniedistmlee from :im other cmi are invii curved depressions 25. From the edges of' heee deprcsions the foros oi the member constituting a. half of the clump extend in two directions; making im obtuse unginwth other. Consequently il tlm two portions of the slamp ere put to getlieij 5h their correspondjngg arts registering wlth each other, and ,a 'tis' laced in the eyiindrieaiopeningsformed )'the semi-circular depressions, the two members of the clamp will be capable of swinging u on i a pivot lormed by either of the two e ges of the registering depressions. The extent of this motion is indicated by Figs. 4, 6 a id 7. In order to hold the two parts of tie clamp together, a bolt 26 is employed, hav ing a nut Z7, the bolt passing through perorations in the two members of the clamp ro at a point bet-.veen the jaws and the depressions. The jaws 24 are designed to receive any article to which the clamp is to 'be secured, as for example a portion of the bedstead, and it will be obvious that the -elamp is sufficiently adjustable to allow the insertion and clamping of bars or rods of various sizes and shapes, three difierent parts. of the-bedstead being shown in' the ','drawings .as engaged between the jaws. zo vReferring now to Fig. 5, it will be seen that the depressions 25 are located on bars 28 vwhich extend fromthe body of the clamping .membeig an'dthat an opening 29 is provided -in the body. 'Below this o ening is a guard 2 5 or keeper 30, In use the c amp 1s designed -tosupport a roller 31 in the opening 2D, the rroller'havng an integral shaft in the`,form ofepairof hubs 32 resting in the de ressions 25.. Between the roller and the wc ls of the o coing 29 issuliicient clearance to allow t el belt 22 to ass, and the guard 30 is for vthe :purpose of ee ing the belt from falling away from the Kro er. It will be observed that these clamps can be used in various `forms and a pliedwherever it is desired to support a roller or similar device upon a stationary or movable object.
-ln'ligs. 1 and 2 the upper part of the hed- 4stead is shown as being used as a support for 4o two ofthese clam s to carry the rollers for support' :the be ts that extend upwardly 'from the s aft 16, while the-anglwiron at the bottom of the bedis used forsupporting the clamps -used below for asimilar purpose. As -'is shownin my above-mentioned patent, the ',f beltsiwhich extend upwardly from the shaft ;,16pass:dewnwardly over the rollers 31 and engage a frame located on the bed. `In the same way the other belts pass first down- 5o,wardlyunder the hed and then upwardly over, rollers-su ported Vby similar clamps at the-head of theed, so as to support the other endof the same frame. This frame is shown as composed ofjour side and end members 5 5 and four Lshepedcorner-pieees 34. Either ofthe elementa, or 34 isimade so that the other can. ntenjts end. I have shown the twofle s. o'feich corner-pieceextendng into fthe en s :ci the adjacent members 33 which odore, in the` form of tubes. This rovides for iholdin the Vtubes together. n order to yforce t e tubes toward eachother, the fabric 135,- which is designed tdbe sup ortcd by this 'fra-ine, is connected withthe'tu es by means gpifcords 36,01' the like passing around them.
As the fabric is stretched between the tuoi it will be obvious that it will act to force them toward each other, so that the frame will be rigid and efficiently perform its office. The principal object in constructing this frame in this manner is to provide an inexpensive' and efficient device for this purpose, all machine and hand work bein dispensed with. It will be readily observed that the parts can be easily separated so as to occupy small space when `racked for shipment, and can be readily asscm led when the bedstead is set up, even by the most unskilled persons.
As in my former patent, I'have shown a head-rest having a l'rame comprising tubes 37 and oornerieoes 38 ofthe sainecharacter as those descri ed above. Each vof the side tubes' 37 is pivotally connected with one of the side tubes 33 by means of a casting 39, which itself is pivoted to one of the tubes This casting is provided with a projection 40 adapted to enter the end of the tube 37 and aord a joint similar to the joints formed by' the corner- pieces 34 and 38, and having substantially the same advantageous pro erties. The head-rest issupported on a rac 4l in any desired position by means of a frame 42. By the use of these clamps and the other de vices specified, a bed suitable for use in hospitals and for like purposes is obtained, which is moet simple in construction and can be very cheaply manufactured and 'very easily setup. Thisbedstead is so constructed, that by dismantling it of the clamps, stretcherirame, belts and winch it can be used as an ordinary bed, leaving no evidences that it is designed for other purposes.
Among the advantages claimed for the clam s specified, are the following: they arc capa le of being clamped on varied sizes and shapes of members; the two parts can be cast 'from the same pattern; they are interchangeable; when east they can be applied for the purposes for which they are intended, without requiring that any machine-work or hand-work be expended upon them. `The joints or connections of the stretcher-frame possess the same advantages etnot requiring any shop-work on them before putting them into use. It is the sim ilicity of construction of thesaparts, and t e elimination of ex enscfor extra work, :that constitutes the ziference between a commerciali successful and anonsuceessful invalid bei Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: i
1. The combination with a bedstead of a clamp comprising two du liestemer'nbers, each having a semi-circo ar depression to serve as a hearing, each member being .provided with two surfaccs extending from said bearing at an obtuse angle to each other, a jaw attho end of onofoi said surfaces, u. stud passing. through the semi-circular depres' I lOO sions and serving as a pivot for the jaws, and means for forcing the jaws together about said pivot.
