PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A ril 30,1907.
Application filed March 12, 1906. Serial No. 305,588.
To aid Lu/tent it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPn HARTIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Vestmore land and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench composed of two members, one of which is formed with oppositely curved vertical surfaces, and the other being bifurcated and serrated to co-operate with one of the first mentioned surfaces.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and particularly pointed out in the claim.
I11 the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved wrench, the jaws being arranged to turn a pipe or the like toward the right. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, the jaws being arranged to turn a pipe toward the left.
1, indicates a handle, formed on one end with an approximately arrow shaped head," 2, the outer sides and the free end of which and 4. The edges to improvements are formed with teeth a of the arrow-head, it will be observed are somewhat curved outwardly to secure a tighter hold on the article being operated upon. At a point between the arrow-head 2 and handle 1, is a horizontal slot 5, through which, and openings 6, in a movable jaw 7, a pin 8, passes.
The movable jaw 7, is concaved on its in ner surface, and is bifurcated at its lower end to form ears 7, to embrace the head 2. The concaved surface is provided with teeth 10, which co-operate with teeth 3 and 4, to grip an article. It will be noted, by reference to the drawing that the inner curve of the movable jaw is tangent to either of the sides 3 or 4, of head'2, whereby when the article is being gripped it can be carried to a point where the teeth can securely hold it. Furthermore the end of concaved surface of the movable jaw is extended to form approximately a hook 12, when positioned as shown in Fig. 1, to insure hold on the article.
i gether,
In this connection the slot 5, serves to perform a very important function, in that the space between the jaws to receive an article is automatically adjusted when pressure is applied to grip a pipe, and by turning handle 1, in direction of arrow a, the teeth 3, force the article against teeth 10, and c011- tinued pressure will grip the sides of the article which insures the article being turned. To reverse the movement of the article movable jaw 7, is turned on its pivot toward the left to present teeth 10, opposite teeth 4, and by turning handle in direction of handle 6, said teeth 4, crowd the article down between thcm and teeth 10, until a binding action takes place.
Obviously the slot 5, will permit of adjusting the jaws to take hold of an article of unusual size.
\Vhat I claim is:
A wrench comprising an operating jaw having oppositely curved gripping edges, and formed with a slot, each gripping edge formed with a series of serrations, and a receiving jaw pivotally connected to the operating jaw, a pin pivoting the two jaws tosaid pin passing through the slot in the operating jaw, the receiving jaw having the relatively inner edge curved and formed with a series of serrations, a portion of the serrated edge of the receiving jaw curving concentrically of one of the serrated edges of the operating jaw, the remaining portion of the serrated edge of the receiving jaw curving concentrically to the other serrated edge of the operating jaw, whereby each of the serrated edges of the operating jaw is adapted for co-opcrating with a different portion of the serrated edge of the receiving jaw, when the pivot pin is at one end of the slot in the operating jaw, and a different relative relationship of the adjacent edges of the two jaws when said pivot pin is at the opposite end of said slot.
In testnnony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. R. IVALKER, GEO. CLIFFORD.
