invention, such as will enable others skilled JAMES T. MCNEELY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SUSPENDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed November 16, 1905. Serial No- 287,552.
To all whom/ it 'ntwg concern.- I Be it known that I, James T. MCNERLY, a l citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to suspenders for supporting diapers and sanitary towels upon the person and it has for its object to produce an eflicient device of this character, so constructed and arranged as to support the diaper or towel from the shoulders, and which shall be flexible and elastic and con forming to the body of the wearer, thus insuring'conifort as well as a proper support for the diaper or towel, and one which at the same time, can be produced at comparatively small cost.
To the above ends my invention consists of the improved suspender which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure shows a per spective View and Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal sectional view through one of the ends.
Similar reference characters will be employed throughout the specification and drawing to designate corresponding parts.
In the drawing, A represents the suspenders as a whole, comprising the end sections a and and the shoulder straps at and a, the whole being made of knitted material and preferably integrally.
As shown in the drawing, the shoulder straps a and (1, are preferably narrower than the ends a and a, they being approximately half the width of the ends. Each of the ends a and a are provided with knitted tabs at and a to receive the pins by which the diaper or towel is connected to the suspenders and such tabs will be preferably double and of a different character of knitting than the body of the suspenders.
The body of the suspenders is knit of stitches which will produce elasticity in a longitudinal direction, but the tabs a and a are knitted in such a way as to resist longitudinal stretch and are as before stated prcl erably double, forming a strong foundation for the pins. The ends a and (1/ and the shoulder straps a" and of are finished with selvedge edges a and at the union between. the ends and the shoulder straps, there will preferably be knitted in gussets (/7 spanning the space between the shoulder straps.
In use. the device will be placed over the head of the wearer, the shoulder straps resting upon the shoulders, and the ends passing donn the body, one at the back, the other over the abdomen in such a position that one end of the diaper or towel can be pinned'to the tab (1" and the other to the tab (11, thus supporting the diaper in proper position, and the device stretching elastically to a limited extent and conforming to the movements of the body will be comparatively comfortable.
Having described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United statesz 1. A knitted suspender, comprising the shoulder straps (1 and a, and the ends a and a uniting the shoulder straps at their opposite ends and all formed integrally, substautially as described.
2. A knitted suspender, comprising the relatively wide ends a and a uniting the inte gral shoulder straps a and a, and the tabs it and (1 relatively thicker and stronger than the ends, substantially as described.
3. A knitted suspcnder, coniprisii'ig the ends a and a, the integral shoulder straps of and a? and the knitted gussets (:7 located at the junction of the shoulder straps and the ends, substantially as described.
A knitted suspender, comprising the ends a and a, the shoulder straps (l and (1 and the double tabs a" and (0 forming e.\'ten sions of the ends (t and (1 substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
