Description

PATENTED APR. 30, 1907.
A. 0. JONES.
HOT AIR REGISTER ATTACHMENT;
APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1906.
INVENTOR IIIIIIE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOT-AlR-REGISTER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed May 25, 1906. Serial No. 318,734.
To a, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALMoN O. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hot-Air-Register Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hot air registers and more particularly to deflectors for the same; the object being to provide a wall register which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which is very effective in use.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a very simple means for operating the deflector.
With these various objects in view my invention consists of the employment of a head journaled in the front of a register carrying a thumb-nut, said head being provided with an eye in which a strand of wire passes, bent back upon itself forming a screw which is adapted to work in a slot of a pivoted deflector.
This invention consists also in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully de scribed and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved register. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the operating screw. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the thumb nut of the screw detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the head of the screw detached. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the spring washer. Fig. 6 is a detail plan view.
Referring to the drawings A, indicates a reticulated or perforated press steel plate forming the front of the register having top and side flanges. A cast steel flanged plate B, is secured to the inner face of the front adjacent the top flange provided with an opening surrounded by an upwardly projecting flange B, over which a cap is adapted to fit, and close the same, when desired. Secured to the outside and inside of the flanges of the plate B, are tin plates C and D forming a casing with an air space between the walls of the same, which project down below the front, having the space between the plates closed by tin strips E, bent back upon themselves and secured between the plates in any manner desired. Spaced tin plates closed at their upper ends forming a casing F, are secured to the inside of the front ad jacent its lower end having a strip G, bent back upon itself secured between the same at the bottom. The plate B, is provided with apertured ears B in which a shaft H, is mounted, carrying a curved plate I, having flanged side and bottoms forming a deflector which is of such a shape and size to fit snugly in the casing and to completely close the front of the register when the lower end of the plate is brought into engagement with the casing F. The plate C, is provided with a depression 1, adjacent its upper end having a central slot 1 A strip of metal J,
is secured over the rear of the depression by rivets having a slot J, registering with the slot 1.
Mounted in a circular opening formed in the front A, is a head K, having a reduced round portion K adapted to fit in the opening in the front and a reduced square portion K, provided with a threaded recess in its end. The square portion K is adapted to fit in the square socket L, of the thumb-nut L, and to be securely locked therein by a screw M carrying a washer M working in the threaded recess at the end of the squared portion K A spring washer N, is mounted on the reduced round portion of the head adapted to bear against the inner face of the front and prevent the same from rattling. A11 eye K is formed on the other end of the head K, through which a strand of wire is adapted to pass and be bent back and twisted upon itself to form a screw 0, which is adapted to work in the slot 1 of the depression, and slot J, of the strip J, so that by turning the hand nut the reflector can be swung in and out as desired, thereby closing or opening the register.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that I have provided a register with a deflector, having a very novel operating means for opening and closing the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 The combination with the front plate of a registering box provided with an opening, of a shaft mounted in said box, a curved deflector provided with a slotted depression secured on said shaft, a slotted plate secured to the rear of said depression, a head mounted in the opening of the front plate, a thumbnut carried by said head, an eye formed on one end of said head, a strand of wire passing through said eye bent back and twisted upon itself forming a screw adapted to work in the slot, of the depression, and plate, for the purpose described. I
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with the front plate of a register boX provided with an opening, of a curved deflector provided with aslotted depression pivotally mounted in said boX, a slotted plate secured over said depression, a head having a reduced round portion mounted in the opening in the front plate, a square reduced portion formed on said head, a thumb-nut provided with a socket adapted to be secured on said portion by a screw working in a threaded recess formed in the end of said squared reduced portion, an eye formed on the other end of said head and a wire passing through said eye bent back and twisted upon itself to form a screw adapted to work in the slot of the depression and plate, for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a front plate carrying a casing provided with double-walls, of a shaft mounted in the casing, a curved plate secured to said shaft provided with a slotted depression, a plate secured over said depression provided with a slot registering with the slot of the depression, a head mounted in the front plate provided with an eye and a screw carried by said eye formed of a single piece of wire working in the slot of the depression and plate, for the purpose described.
