CHllVlNEY-FLUE PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented April 80, 1907.
Application filed October 11,1906. Serial No. 338.475.
T0 to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLEY LEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Numa, in the county of Appanoose and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Flue Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
As it is well known, under all ordinary conditions of service, the bricks at the upper ends of brick chimneys such as are commonly employed for dwelling houses and the like become loose after the chimney has been in use for several years, and are soon displaced necessitating rebuilding of the chimney flue at the upper end thereof in order that the same may be maintained in proper working condition.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective means for rotecting and reinforcing the upper end of chimney fines to increase the life of the latter, and obviating the expense, trouble, and other disadvanta es incident to the operation of restoring the chimney to its original condition after it has been in use for a long period of time.
The construction and operation of the invention will appear fully hereinafter.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing the chimney having the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 embodying a modification of the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention, in the drawings the numeral 1 designates the chimney which is of the ordinary brick type employed customarily for buildings and dwellings of all kinds. The invention is applied to the upper portion of the chimney and consists of a binder, or core 2 of plastic material received in an inclosing body, shell or similar part 3, the latter receiving and surrounding the upper portion of the chimney 1. It is referred that the upper and lower sides of t e shell or inclosing body 3 be of stepped form as indicated at 3, though this is not absolutely necessary within the broader contemplation of the invention. The shell or inclosing body 3 may be constructed of any suitable substance, or material, such as burnt clay, composition, tile substance, or the like, and the core or binder 2 in the inclosing body 3 is likewise to be made of any suitable material which is fed in its plastic state through openings 4 in the upper portion of the shell 3 into the space which is surrounded by the shell and between said shell and the chimney. The opening in the bottom of the shell 3 is to be of a size to snugly fit the chimney, being in contact with the sides of the latter. The opening in the upper portion of the shell however, is preferably of about the same size as the flue or passage of the chimney 1, whereby the upper portion of said shell will overlap the top of the chimney and thereby support the invention in its operative position.
In the actual use of the invention after a chimney has been in use several years and there is a possibility of the bricks or the material from which it is made becoming displaced, a protector such as comprising the invention is placed upon the top of the chimney and it will be obvious that after the core or binder 2 has hardened or set, the chimney will be provided at its top with a reinforcement, the life of which is indefinite.
The structures comprising the invention will be made in various sizes to accommodate for application thereof to chimneys of different sizes, and the construction of the protector makes it very cheap and serviceable for obvious reasons.
A modification of the invention is shown in Fig. 3 in which the shell or top 3 of the protector is formed with a downwardly extending hollow portion 5 adapted to iit about the chimney 1 and receive that portion of the chimney above the roof of the dwelling of the house in which it is constructed. The hollow portion 5 may have ofl'standing flanges 6 at its lower end, and under some conditions would be a desirable adaptation of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination, a chimney, and a protector therefor, the latter consisting of a shell adapted to receive and surround the upper portion of the chimney and of hollow form so that its sides will be spaced from the sides of said chimney, the top of the shell overlapping the top of the chimney and being provided With an opening coincident With that of the chimney, the shell being further provided With openings communicating with the 5 space between said shell and chimney, and a binder of plastic material received in the space between the sides of the shell and the sides of the chimney.
2. In combination, a chimney, and a protector therefor, the latter consisting of a shell surrounding the upper portion of and receiving said chimney the sides of the shell being spaced from the sides of the chimney, the loWer portion of the shell snugly fitting about 15 the chimney, the upper portion of the shell
